Evaluation Of A Veterans Treatment Court In The Northwest United States, Jacob Davis Stalcup

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This thesis provides an evaluation of a Veterans Treatment Court in the northwestern United States. Previously collected data from clients within the court was analyzed and helped format semi-structured interviews with court employees. The conclusion of this evaluation is that the court would operate more effectively if there was a focus on the recruitment and retention of veteran employees, especially peer mentors. This could be accomplished by policy changes involving hiring new employees.

Exploring Principals’ Experiences With Social Justice Issues In Their Work As School Leaders, Djimtibaye Otalbaye Jun 2021

Exploring Principals’ Experiences With Social Justice Issues In Their Work As School Leaders, Djimtibaye Otalbaye

Dissertations

Social justice has taken on a special importance in education today, although it is not a new concept in terms of human history. Social justice is not a local issue, but exists in all parts of the world (Jean Marie et al., 2014). Differentiation among social environments of schools and increasing elements of diversity and roles of schools to create a socially just structure can be seen as main reasons for these issues (Turhan, 2010). Schools are therefore challenged to address the social conditions and hardships of students by responding to their needs (Avant, 2014).

The purpose of this basic …

Real-Time Monitoring As A Supplementary Security Component Of Vigilantism In Modern Network Environments, Victor R. Kebande, Nickson M. Karie, Richard A. Ikuesan Jan 2021

Real-Time Monitoring As A Supplementary Security Component Of Vigilantism In Modern Network Environments, Victor R. Kebande, Nickson M. Karie, Richard A. Ikuesan

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

© 2020, The Author(s). The phenomenon of network vigilantism is autonomously attributed to how anomalies and obscure activities from adversaries can be tracked in real-time. Needless to say, in today’s dynamic, virtualized, and complex network environments, it has become undeniably necessary for network administrators, analysts as well as engineers to practice network vigilantism, on traffic as well as other network events in real-time. The reason is to understand the exact security posture of an organization’s network environment at any given time. This is driven by the fact that modern network environments do, not only present new opportunities to organizations but …

When We Don't Know How To Get Where We're Going...Perhaps It's Time We Find A Map, Sharon Porter Oct 2020

When We Don't Know How To Get Where We're Going...Perhaps It's Time We Find A Map, Sharon Porter

Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events

This paper will outline four issues that are indicative of the concerns of the forensic community. The lack of focus and the nonexistence of a clear line of responsibility between the American Forensic Association, the Speech Communication Association-Forensic Division and the Council of Forensic Organizations serve as impediments in accomplishing these and other goals. Since the restructuring of the forensic organizations offer promise for correcting these difficulties, guidelines for the restructuring process will be advanced. Finally, a possible model will be advocated which could bring about a more effective administrative structure for collegiate forensics.

Challenging The Conventions Of Oral Interpretation, Christopher S. Aspdal Oct 2020

Challenging The Conventions Of Oral Interpretation, Christopher S. Aspdal

Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events

The forensic community is currently facing many difficult challenges. Many stigmas have been placed in the world of oral interpretation. The nature of oral interpretation is to educate students through the use of literature. Regardless of the literature used, students have the ability to grow from this material. However, we as coaches and judges have taken a more negative approach to this concept. Words such as recycle and trite have taken the place of more important words like education and research.

It is important for us to look at the reasons why we have taken this approach to oral interpretation …

Finding A Prescription For What Ails The Forensics Comunity: A Deeper Examination Of Burnout Of Directors Of Forensics, Bethany Piety Oct 2020

Finding A Prescription For What Ails The Forensics Comunity: A Deeper Examination Of Burnout Of Directors Of Forensics, Bethany Piety

Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events

The researcher wanted to have a better understanding of the various obstacles that create an atmosphere of burnout, in an attempt to find some solutions to the problem. Thus, the type of research used for this study was qualitative, as the interview process provides a more multifaceted view of some of the issues DOFs have to cope with professionally and interpersonally. Interviewing DOFs in the forensics community would not only shed light on the current concerns, but it would also allow the interviewer to ask participants to disclose more deeply about specific issues related to the community. The questions posited …

Associate Professor Daniel F. Saffioti

Objective Clinical psychology students and clinicians in regional and remote areas face challenges accessing required supervision and peer consultation. Distance supervision using existing online conferencing tools (e.g., SKYPE) is one option, but limitations of existing platforms require an external method of initiating a supervisory relationship and securely sharing confidential documents and videos. This paper addresses the development of an e-supervision application to overcome these limitations, and examines issues inherent to such a development. Method A newly developed e-supervision application provides online access to a database of clinical supervisors and peers for students to search, contact and meet, with additional document …

The Next 50 Years Of Forensics: Acknowledging Problems, Preparing Solutions, Christopher P. Outzen, Lucas J. Youngvorst, Daniel Cronn-Mills

Daniel Cronn-Mills, Ph.D.

In previous decades, forensics was a well-respected co-curricular activity, with students becoming involved as early as middle school and moving into colleges across the country. The activity provides a multitude of meanings for individuals, teams, and colleges across the nation conjuring feelings of friendship, community, education, leadership, and competition. Many within the forensic community know the reputation of this activity can be attributed to influential individuals such as Grace Walsh, L. E. Norton, and Larry Schnoor, among others. Despite the great past and present of this activity, the future is looming with potential pitfalls that could damage the activity. We …

Accommodating Common Mental Health Issues In Mediation, Rebekah Doley Aug 2016

Accommodating Common Mental Health Issues In Mediation, Rebekah Doley

Rebekah Doley

Mediators have a responsibility to maximise an individual’s ability to effectively participate in the decision-making process, including supporting procedural fairness where equality and balance in the parties’ contributions to the process is expected. Capacity to participate effectively is affected by the presence of mental health concerns.Various means of screening for psychological distress in mediation participants have been discussed, however, there is limited training available to mediators from non-clinical professions in evaluating mental health issues. An alternative approach is to consider ways in which the mediation process could be modified to enhance an individual’s capacity to effectively participate, especially when the …

The Issues And Challenges Of Assessing Media Literacy Education, Evelien A. Schilder, Barbara B. Lockee, D. Patrick Saxon

Journal of Media Literacy Education

In the media literacy literature, the challenges associated with assessment have, to a great extent, been ignored. The purpose of this mixed methods study was therefore to explore the views of media literacy scholars and professionals on assessment challenges through qualitative interviews (n = 10) with the intent of using this information to develop a quantitative survey to validate and extend the qualitative findings with a larger sample of media literacy professionals and scholars from around the world (n = 133). The findings offer an overview of the assessment challenges encountered by these participants.

The Influence Of Problem Solving Style On Team Dynamics When Building Consensus, Alexa J. Lamm, Hannah S. Carter, Quisto Settle, Erica Odera Feb 2016

The Influence Of Problem Solving Style On Team Dynamics When Building Consensus, Alexa J. Lamm, Hannah S. Carter, Quisto Settle, Erica Odera

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Issues facing the agricultural and natural resource (ANR) sector can be contentious due to opposing viewpoints, with people working against one another rather than working together to come to consensus on what will benefit the industry as a whole. Without a consistent message, the ANR industry will struggle when trying to gain support from decision makers. Therefore, opinion leaders need the skills to bring individuals and organizations together when facing critical issues that require groups to reach consensus. Agricultural leadership programs can offer educational opportunities for individuals to build problem-solving and team-building skills that will enable them to lead discussions …

Children and young people, throughout the world, are experiencing a time of immense and rapid change - environmental, social, political, economic, and cultural. This chapter introduces readers to a volume entitled Geographies of Global Issues: Change and Threat, which is part of the Geographies of Children and Young People series. It provides an overview of the chapters contained in that volume and outlines four key themes that run across those chapters. First, children's geographies are also - fundamentally - about adults. It does not make sense to do children's geographies, without taking the perspectives of adult decision-makers into account. Second, …

There is a growing need worldwide to increase the quality and productivity of healthcare services delivery. To this end, analysing and reducing unwarranted variations in healthcare has attracted much attention in recent times. However, current modelling and simulation approaches to reduce unwarranted variations suffer from numerous limitations. Consequently, service improvement efforts have often failed to deliver expected results. This paper discusses the key issues associated with reducing unwarranted variations in hospital service delivery systems, and proposes a research framework that aims at overcoming these issues. In doing so, it highlights the need for: accurately and efficiently modelling complex service delivery …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Increasing demand of electrical energy has leaded to utilization of more and more Distributed generation (DG) sources in distribution systems. Since the locations and capacities of the DG sources connected to the distribution system profoundly impact on reducing system loss and improving system reliability, so placement and sizing indication of DGs is the most substantial process in distribution systems. By adding the reliability objective to this problem, it becomes more complicated than before and it needs to be solved with an accurate algorithm. To this reason, to solve the proposed problem a new approach based on the mixture of two …

Measuring Attitudes Toward Plagiarism: Issues And Psychometric Solutions, John F. Ehrich, Steven J. Howard, Jim S. Tognolini, Sahar Bokosmaty

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to address the issue of failing to psychometrically test questionnaire instruments when measuring university students' attitudes towards plagiarism. These issues are highlighted by a psychometric evaluation of a commonly used (but previously untested) plagiarism attitudinal scale. Design/methodology/approach - The importance of psychometric testing is shown through an analysis of a commonly used scale using modern techniques (e.g. Rasch analysis) on 131 undergraduate education students at an Australian university. Findings - Psychometric analysis revealed the scale to be unreliable in its present form. However, when reduced to an eight-item subscale it became marginally …
