Corruption involves greed, money, and risky decision-making. We explore the love of money, pay satisfaction, probability of risk, and dishonesty across cultures. Avaricious monetary aspiration breeds unethicality. Prospect theory frames decisions in the gains-losses domain and high-low probability. Pay dissatisfaction (in the losses domain) incites dishonesty in the name of justice at the individual level. The Corruption Perceptions Index, CPI, signals a high-low probability of getting caught for dishonesty at the country level. We theorize that decision-makers adopt avaricious love-of-money aspiration as a lens and frame dishonesty in the gains-losses domain (pay satisfaction-dissatisfaction, Level 1) and high-low probability (CPI, Level …

Measuring Invariance Of Theory Of Planned Behavior Model On Online Fitness Program Participation During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Ran Wei, Yuanlong Liu, Brooks Applegate, Colin Cork
Measuring Invariance Of Theory Of Planned Behavior Model On Online Fitness Program Participation During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Ran Wei, Yuanlong Liu, Brooks Applegate, Colin Cork
International Journal of Physical Activity and Health
Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) is one of the most frequently cited and most influential models to explain and predict human intentions and behaviors (Ajzen, 1991, 2011; Kim & James, 2016), which include physical activity and exercise. However, the dimensionality of TPB has not been examined in the context of online fitness program (OFP) participation during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study was to examine the TPB measurement parameters of the factorial models and determine the generalizability of the psychological constructs of the TPB model on gender groups and whether COVID-19 affected annual income groups. The participants were …

Adaptive And Maladaptive Coping As Mediators Of The Relationship Between Impostor Phenomenon And Help Seeking Intention, Victor Mosconi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The modern workplace and public media have reported on the influence of the impostor phenomenon (IP) on leadership mental health and workplace effectiveness. The choice of coping strategy may influence leaders’ intentions to seek psychological help. Guided by the impostor cycle model, the purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the extent to which adaptive and maladaptive coping mediates the relationship between IP and help-seeking intention in a convenience sample of 162 participants in leadership positions. The Clance Impostor Phenomenon Scale assessed strength of IP, the Brief COPE measure assessed adaptive and maladaptive coping, and the Beliefs About Psychological …
Effect Of Training Modality On Intention To Exercise Among Law Enforcement Cadets Post Academy, Nicholas Hunt
Effect Of Training Modality On Intention To Exercise Among Law Enforcement Cadets Post Academy, Nicholas Hunt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Police academies are typically the first formalized job-task-oriented exercise training for law enforcement officers (LEOs). Research has demonstrated that cadets are at higher risk of injury during the academy. Physical training (PT) is a critical component of LEO academy efforts to build occupational skills to meet job demands. Although research is beginning to investigate the efficacy of different training modalities, more research is needed to understand the impact of academy training load and modality on occupational readiness and interest in maintaining exercise behaviors post-academy. PURPOSE: to investigate the relationships between different physical training modalities and intention to continue physical training …
Breastfeeding Goal Attainment And Likelihood Of Future Breastfeeding: A Test Of Self-Affirmation Theory, Mackenzie Dm Whipps
Breastfeeding Goal Attainment And Likelihood Of Future Breastfeeding: A Test Of Self-Affirmation Theory, Mackenzie Dm Whipps
Health Behavior Research
Breastfeeding is an important health behavior for pediatric and maternal wellbeing. However, many mothers in the United States do not meet breastfeeding duration guidelines, nor do they meet their own goals for breastfeeding. Non-attainment of breastfeeding goals has implications for the health and wellbeing of future children born into those families. Using publicly available national data, we tested a self-affirmation theory (SAT) hypothesis to explore the complex relationship between breastfeeding goal attainment and intention to breastfeed a future child. We found goal attainment predicted stronger future intention, and that this association was moderated by how highly the mother valued breastfeeding. …

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, tourism constraints have created a challenge for inclusive tourism, especially for older people and people with comorbidities. This study examined intrapersonal constraints’ effect on the travel intentions of people facing fewer opportunities for tourism due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which could disrupt their well-being fulfillment. The data were collected through an online survey of Jakarta citizens aged 46 years and older from the end of June to September 2021, and a total of 337 responses were accumulated. This study applied partial least square structural equation modeling to test the moderating effect of intrapersonal constraints toward …

The Effect Of Grit On Leisure Time Physical Activity. An Application Of The Theory Of Planned Behaviour, Vello Hein, Andre Koka, Hanna Kalajas-Tilga, Henri Tilga, Lennart Raudsepp
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: Grit as a personal trait has an important role in achieving different behavioural outcomes. The present study aimed to test the validity of an extended model of the Theory of Planned Behaviour, in which domains of grit, such as perseverance of effort and consistence of interest are mediators between the attitude and intention, and between attitude and self-reported leisure time physical activity behaviour. Material and methods: The participants were school children: 106 boys (M age = 13.00, SD = 0.98) and 240 girls (M age = 13.13, SD = 0.95) Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to test the …
Intention To Complain About Unmanned Aircraft System Noise: A Structural Equation Analysis, Robert Brents
Intention To Complain About Unmanned Aircraft System Noise: A Structural Equation Analysis, Robert Brents
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Aircraft noise has a long and documented history as a source of public annoyance and a driver of noise complaints. The impending large-scale use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS)s could expose a broader cross-section of the public to a new type of aircraft noise. Recent research notes some reactions to UAS noise, but no rigorous analyses of public intention to complain about UAS noise have been found.
Due to the potential proliferation of UASs and their attendant noise, understanding public reaction could advise both government and industry. Governments at all levels could apply the results to inform policies related to …

Intention To Breastfeed: Breastfeeding Attitudes, Norms, Self-Efficacy, Social Support Network And Community Resources Of African American, Low-Income, Emerging Adult Women, Pregnant For The First Time, Sara E. Brown
Theses & Dissertations
African American (AA) women continue to have the lowest rates of breastfeeding. This continues to create a health disparity even though breastfeeding is extensively recognized in the scientific and health care communities as the optimal feeding choice for infants. This study examined the relationship between the external variables (social support network and community resources) and the explanatory variables (attitudes, norms, and perceived self-efficacy) and intention to breastfeed, for the AA, first time, low-income, emerging adult pregnant woman. The Integrated Behavior Model (IBM) was used as the theoretical framework to guide this study in better understanding the variables influencing breastfeeding intention. …

The Effectiveness Of The Protection Motivation Theory In Reducing Vaping Behaviour In A Student Population, Babac Salmani
The Effectiveness Of The Protection Motivation Theory In Reducing Vaping Behaviour In A Student Population, Babac Salmani
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
A threat appraisal model grounded in Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) determined whether providing health information regarding perceived severity (PS) and perceived vulnerability (PS) of vaping health complications, corroborates with reduced vaping-related intention and habitual behaviour. Seventy-seven regular vapers (22.21 ± 3.47 years) registered within a Canadian university were randomized into one of two groups, wherein the aforementioned threat appraisal information was present. Participants in the experimental group (n = 41) watched an 8-minute information video a week after baseline, following the threat appraisal components of PMT. Those in the attention control group (n = 36) watched an information video on …
Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Explore Green Food Purchase Intentions, Katrina A. Auza, Kamel Mouloudj
Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Explore Green Food Purchase Intentions, Katrina A. Auza, Kamel Mouloudj
University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing
Predicting sustainable consumption behavior is particularly important in the field of marketing and public policy making, as environmental sustainability becomes a major concern for the public and private sector. This paper aims to contribute to the development of the extended theory of planned behavior (TPB) and to gain some insight into what drives students' intentions to purchase green food in Algeria as a developing country. Results from multiple linear regression (MLR) using data from the convenience sample of 265 students enrolled at three universities in Algiers, Algeria, shows that attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control (PBC), and environmental concern have …

The article, dealing with the centenary anniversary of James Jones, presents her own subdivision of his creative work into periods, given that the author of the article was the first researcher in the former USSR and the USA defending her monographic work in 1981 on “Problems of War and Peace in James Jones’s creative work”. The aim of her article is to highlight the role of a short story genre in evolution of American writers, including James Jones, choosing their themes and further confirming the manner and peculiarities of their writing style in their novels. The main part of the …
Probing For Intention: Latent Awareness Or Metacognitive Reflection, Kate Harder, Jake Gavenas, Aaron Schurger, Uri Maoz
Probing For Intention: Latent Awareness Or Metacognitive Reflection, Kate Harder, Jake Gavenas, Aaron Schurger, Uri Maoz
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
When making spontaneous movements, individuals report becoming consciously aware of movement intentions roughly 200 milliseconds before movement itself. However, when intention timing is measured by interrupting people and asking if they intended to move, estimates place intention onset much earlier, at up to 800-1000 milliseconds before movement. It is unclear whether the early timing demonstrates a latent awareness of intention long before movement, or if people simply make a metacognitive judgment in response to the interruption. We will test this by measuring pupil size, which is related to awareness, and taking note of any differences between when people report having …

Using Cognitive Dissonance To Encourage Covid-Preventive Behaviours, Xuanqiao Wang
Brescia Psychology Undergraduate Honours Theses
This study investigated whether a hypocrisy-based intervention would increase students’ intentions to engage in COVID-preventive behaviours. We hypothesized that participants in the hypocrisy-induction condition (experimental condition) would express higher levels of intention to engage in COVID-preventative behaviours than participants in whom hypocrisy has not been induced (control condition). The sample consisted of 2 male and 64 female undergraduate students at Brescia University College. An independent t-test was conducted on the intention rating scores of practicing COVID-preventative behaviours for the experimental and control conditions. It was found that there was no significant difference in the average intention rating score between the …
Pupillometric Investigation Of Spontaneous Action And Intention Awareness, Kate M. Harder, Ruby Moss, Jake Gavenas
Pupillometric Investigation Of Spontaneous Action And Intention Awareness, Kate M. Harder, Ruby Moss, Jake Gavenas
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
The neuroscience of volition, to a large extent, investigates the neural precursors of conscious decision-making and action. Pupillometry is a powerful tool for investigating conscious and attentional processing, partly because of its connection to the locus coeruleus (Josh et al., 2016). For instance, in an attentional blink paradigm, differences in pupil dilations were associated with conscious versus nonconscious stimuli (Wierda et al., 2012). Nevertheless, this technique received little attention in the study of volition.
We collected pupil data during a spontaneous action paradigm, where subjects freely pressed a button at a time of their choosing, sometimes reporting their onset of …

Relationship Between Specific Security Concerns And Cio Intention To Adopt Cloud, Johnathan Francis Van Houten
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Cloud computing adoption rates have not grown commensurate with several well-known and substantially tangible benefits such as horizontal distribution and reduced cost, the latter both in terms of infrastructure and specialized personnel. The lack of adoption presents a challenge to both service providers from a sales perspective and service consumers from a usability focus. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study utilizing the technological, organizational, and environmental framework was to examine the relationship between shared technology (ST), malicious insiders (MI), account hijacking, data leakage, data protection, service partner trust (SP), regulatory concerns and the key decision-makers intention to adopt cloud …

Does Providing Pill Testing At Festivals Increase Intention To Use Ecstasy?, Sherri Lee Murphy
Theses : Honours
Calls to provide sanctioned pill testing (drug checking) at music festivals has met with resistance from most Australian governments due to a concern that such services would increase use of ecstasy and other drugs. To address an important gap in current knowledge, I investigated how a pill testing service might influence intention to use ecstasy. I also drew from the Theory of Planned Behaviour to examine what determinants of behaviour predict intention to use a pill testing service. Music festival attendees (N = 247) were presented with three hypothetical pill testing scenarios: The current legal circumstance where consumers only …

Levels-Of-Processing Effects On "Remember" Responses In Recognition For Familiar And Unfamiliar Tunes, Esra Mungan, Zehra F. Peynircioğlu, Andrea R. Halpern
Andrea Halpern
We investigated the effect of level-of-processing manipulations on "remember" and "know" responses in episodic melody recognition (Experiments 1 and 2) and how this effect is modulated by item familiarity (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, participants performed 2 conceptual and 2 perceptual orienting tasks while listening to familiar melodies: judging the mood, continuing the tune, tracing the pitch contour, and counting long notes. The conceptual mood task led to higher d' rates for "remember" but not "know" responses. In Experiment 2, participants either judged the mood or counted long notes of tunes with high and low familiarity. A level-of-processing effect emerged …

In the “Libet study” the onset of movement-related brain activity preceded the reported time of the conscious intention to move, suggesting that non-conscious brain processes predetermine voluntary movements (Libet, Gleason, Wright, & Pearl, 1983). While the study’s basic results have been replicated, its validity and assumptions have been questioned. Dominik et al. (2017) provided evidence against the study’s assumption that movement and intention to move are distinct events. In this study, in which researchers did not train participants to distinguish between movement and intention, reports for intention and movement were identical. This differed from the Libet study, in which intention …

Managing A Food Health Crisis: Perceptions And Reactions To Different Response Strategies, Yifei Ren
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Brand crisis could threaten a company with declining public trust and decreased brand reputation (Greyser, 2009). When confronting with a crisis, the organization should respond immediately and properly so that the crisis can be stopped from escalate into a catastrophe (Davies and Walters, 1998). Crisis type can be divided into the victim, the accident or the intentional clusters according to perceived responsibilities the company should shoulder. Based on these factors, the company should select the most appropriate response strategy or a combination of different response strategies to address the crisis situation. In other words, a match between crisis type and …

Timothy Williamson offers the ordinary practice, the lottery and the Moorean argument for the ‘knowledge account’ that assertion is the only speech-act that is governed by the single ‘knowledge rule’ or norm, that one must know its content. I show that the emptiness of the knowledge account renders mysterious why breaking the knowledge rule should be a source of criticism. I then argue that focussing exclusively on the sincerity of the speech-act of letting one know engenders a category mistake about the nature of constraints on assertion. For Williamson and those in his tradition, assertion alls under purely epistemic norms. …
