Regional Economic Contribution Of Crop Insurance Indemnity Payment In The U.S., Hwangwon Lee May 2022

Regional Economic Contribution Of Crop Insurance Indemnity Payment In The U.S., Hwangwon Lee

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Federal Crop Insurance Program (FCIP) has played a pivotal role in agricultural businesses and communities. The FCIP allows farmers to purchase farm and farm-related products and services, maintain heavy agricultural machinery, and utilize farm agency services for preparing for farming in the following agricultural years. In addition, the indemnities enable farmers to repay debts, alleviate farm collapses, and keep farm industries purchasing agricultural-related products and the necessary goods for everyday living, stabilizing the local and farming economies (Lubben & Thompson, 2013).

This study investigates the economic contribution of crop indemnity payments using a methodology that will capture the total …

Estimating The Economic Value Of Water For Agriculture And Other Industries In Tennessee, Stephanie Michaela Owen Aug 2016

Estimating The Economic Value Of Water For Agriculture And Other Industries In Tennessee, Stephanie Michaela Owen

Masters Theses

Tennessee’s currently abundant water resources could eventually become stressed as population continues to rise, climate change impacts water resources, and as agricultural producers continue to increase irrigation. These stresses could impact the productivity of the agricultural sectors and other economic sectors as competition for limited water resources increases. Farmers, policymakers, and researchers alike could benefit from quantifying the economic value of water to help formulate cost-effective and sustainable water use practices. This analysis establishes the water withdrawals (also referred to as “water use”) per dollar of output for competing economic sectors and uses those values in an Input-Output Linear Programming …

Policy Options For Revenue Neutral Gst For Oil And Gas, Sacchidananda Mukherjee, R. Kavita Rao Jun 2015

Policy Options For Revenue Neutral Gst For Oil And Gas, Sacchidananda Mukherjee, R. Kavita Rao

Sacchidananda Mukherjee

1. The study suggests alternative design of GST where tax cascading goes down and prices fall and the Government revenue remains unchanged. 2. Substantial reduction in cascading of taxes is observed for a shift from baseline to alternative scenarios and tax system becomes cleaner. 3. Elimination of cascading of taxes will result in rising export competitiveness of Indian industries in the international markets. 4. In all alternative designs of GST, the prices across the sectors either remain unchanged or decline 5. Dismantling the administered pricing mechanism for petrol and diesel along with introduction of comprehensive GST for petroleum products benefits …

Identification Of Key Productive Sectors In The Mexican Economy, Isaac Sánchez-Juárez, David Revilla, Adelaido García-Andrés Mar 2015

Identification Of Key Productive Sectors In The Mexican Economy, Isaac Sánchez-Juárez, David Revilla, Adelaido García-Andrés

Isaac Sánchez-Juárez

This article focuses on identifying what are the key sectors with high potential for drag induced investment in the Mexican economy, also characterizes the sectors according to their hierarchy, impact and degree of articulation. To achieve this the input-output matrix national 2003 was used (disaggregated into 20 sectors and 79 sub-sectors), provided by the official government agency responsible for generating statistical information, which applied the traditional method of calculation of multipliers which takes into account both relations hierarchical such as circular between the productive sectors of Rasmussen (1956). The originality of the work lies in the application of the social …

The Role Of The Ocean Industry In The Chinese National Economy: An Input-Output Analysis, Rui Zhao May 2013

The Role Of The Ocean Industry In The Chinese National Economy: An Input-Output Analysis, Rui Zhao

Working Papers

The OEAS (Ocean Economy Accounting System) has been established in China for 6 years. However, the economic impact of the ocean economy in China’s national economy has not yet been understood clearly at the national or regional levels. The direct impact of ocean industries in China at national and regional levels has been compiled for the period of 2001-2011, but it is still unclear what the overall economic impacts of ocean industries are in the national economy, and how the ocean industries interact with other industries in the national economy. China is similar to other ocean countries in that, - …

Who Creates Waste? Different Perspectives On Waste Attribution In A Regional Economy, Christa D. Jensen, Stuart Mcintyre, Max Munday, Karen Turner Jan 2009

Who Creates Waste? Different Perspectives On Waste Attribution In A Regional Economy, Christa D. Jensen, Stuart Mcintyre, Max Munday, Karen Turner

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

We use a regional input output (IO) framework and data derived on waste generation by industry to examine regional accountability. In addition to estimating a series of industry waste-output coefficients, the paper considers a series of methods for waste attribution, and practical use for policymakers. The paper first considers perspectives on attribution of domestic waste generation using basic Type I and Type II industry multipliers, and also compares these with multipliers derived from a trade endogenised linear attribution system (TELAS) which permits a greater focus on private and public final consumption as the main exogenous driver of waste generation in …

A Cross-Country Analysis Of High Employment Generating Industries, Abbas Valadkhani Mar 2005

A Cross-Country Analysis Of High Employment Generating Industries, Abbas Valadkhani

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

The objective of this paper is to identify high employment industries in Australia, Japan and the U.S using input-output (IO) analysis. It is found that (1) the high and low employment generating industries in 1980 and/or 1990 are almost the same as those in 1997. Thus on a relative basis, there is no evidence that high employment generating industries have changed since 1980; and (2) the high and low employment generating industries are very similar across these three countries. Four of the consistently high employment generating industries in these countries are Food, Beverage and Tobacco; Chemicals, Petroleum, Coal, Rubber & …

An Analysis Of The Output And Employment Conversion Matrices Of Australia’S Economy, Abbas Valadkhani, T. Robinson Mar 2005

An Analysis Of The Output And Employment Conversion Matrices Of Australia’S Economy, Abbas Valadkhani, T. Robinson

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Based on two snapshots taken from the Australian economy, this study quantifies the impacts of final demand aggregates on output and employment in various sectors using the 1989 and 1997 conversion matrices. The sectoral output and employment are linked with final demand deliveries in such a way that one can measure the impacts on changes in each component of aggregate demand, other components remaining unchanged, on output and employment. A comparison of the aggregate output and employment multipliers in 1989 to 1997 indicates that while the output multipliers have increased, the employment multipliers have declined. This means that through time, …

Using Input-Output Analysis To Identify Australia’S High Employment Generating Industries, Abbas Valadkhani Mar 2003

Using Input-Output Analysis To Identify Australia’S High Employment Generating Industries, Abbas Valadkhani

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Using the 1996-97 input-output table, the objective of this paper is to identify Australia’s high employment generating industries. First, the “real” (direct and indirect) contribution of the tradeable industries to employment are quantified by adopting the “loss of the industry” or “shut-down of industry” approach. Second, the sectoral employment elasticities are calculated to determine the leading employment generating sectors. The empirical analysis and rankings undertaken in this study shed some light on sectoral potentials in relation to the creation of jobs in the economy. It is found that, inter alia, the following industries will play a crucial role in generating …

Assessing The Impact Of Change In Petroleum Prices On Inflation And Household Expenditures In Australia, Abbas Valadkhani, W. F. Mitchell Mar 2002

Assessing The Impact Of Change In Petroleum Prices On Inflation And Household Expenditures In Australia, Abbas Valadkhani, W. F. Mitchell

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

In this paper we examine three broad issues: (a) the expected impact of the recent petrol price rises on prices throughout the economy, (b) the hypothesis that the economy is now less susceptible to oil price rises than it was in the 1970s when the first major oil prices occurred, and (c) the likely distributional impacts of the petrol price rises? A modified input-output (IO) price model is used to simulate the impact of a two-fold increase in petrol prices on the sectoral and aggregate price indices in Australia. The 1996-97 and 1977-78 IO tables are used. Among the results …

Estimating Economic Impacts From Tourism, Ujjayant N. Chakravorty, Deyong Zhou, John Yanagida, Pingsun Leung Dec 1996

Estimating Economic Impacts From Tourism, Ujjayant N. Chakravorty, Deyong Zhou, John Yanagida, Pingsun Leung

Ujjayant Chakravorty

Economists have traditionally used input-output (IO) analysis to examine the impacts of tourism on the economy of a region. This paper introduces a relatively new and alternative technique, computable general equilibrium (CGE). The two approaches are compared and then used to analyze, as an illustration, the impacts on Hawaii’s economy from a reduction in visitor expenditure. The study concludes that the results of the IO model are similar in magnitude to those of the CGE model but generally higher and that sectors closely associated with tourism exhibit the largest effects. The ability to account for inter-sectoral resource flows is a …

Economic Effects Of Tri-Met's Operating And Capital Expenditures Fy 1983 On The Portland Metropolitan Economy, James G. Strathman, Rishinath L. Rao Dec 1983

Economic Effects Of Tri-Met's Operating And Capital Expenditures Fy 1983 On The Portland Metropolitan Economy, James G. Strathman, Rishinath L. Rao

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

A summary of the transit-related benefits and an assessment of the economic effects of Tri-Met's operating and capital expenditures was performed. The economic effects of the agency's expenditures were derived using a 24-sector input-output model of the four county Portland SMSA economy. Input output analysis is frequently used for the purpose of impact assessment because it provides exceptionally detailed estimates of interindustry activity, employment and income that result from agency/project related expenditures. The primary data and background information needed to perform this analysis were provided by the Tri-Met Transit Planning and Development Office.

Entropy Measure In Input-Output Analysis, Martin Zwick, Abbas Heiat Jan 1982

Entropy Measure In Input-Output Analysis, Martin Zwick, Abbas Heiat

Systems Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Applications of Shannon's entropy measure to the matrices of technical and interdependence coefficients, to the final demand vector, and to other aspects of input- output tables are proposed. These entropy measures serve as indices of different types of economic diversity. The relevance of such indices for economic planning and for analyses of economic structural complexity and development is discussed.

Matrix Analysis And Social Planning, Roger A. Lohmann Mar 1976

Matrix Analysis And Social Planning, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This study is a follow-up to an earlier (1971) proposal for the application of Input-output analysis to social planning in human services (Repository item #753), and predates current models of human services as part of the nonprofit, or third sector. The manuscript details a study of financial inputs and service outputs in human services in the United Way system of Knoxville TN, noting a variety of quantitative ratios and measures of the human services delivery system, and assessing some of the strengths and weaknesses of the matrix approach.

Input-Output Analysis And Social Planning, Roger A. Lohmann Apr 1971

Input-Output Analysis And Social Planning, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This article is a proposal for an adaptation of Leontief input-output analysis in economics to uses in community-level social planning. It was made in the later years of the Great Society period, when a relatively large number of federal social grant programs in aging, children's services, disability services, housing, and other health and human service fields mandated social planning and a national system of multi-jurisdictional social planning agencies was emerging.
