The present article shows the results of a survey aimed at identifying the informational abilities of Havana University students. Several methods such as the survey, expert’s interviews and content and document analysis are used. The questionnaire has been structured base on three basic variables: information search, information analysis and release and self-evaluation elements. The identification of these abilities was a key element for guiding libraries in the development of actions focused on their communities.

The Role Of Veterinary Medical Librarians In Teaching Information Literacy, Andrea L. Dinkelman, Ann R. Viera, Danelle A. Bickett-Weddle

This qualitative study seeks to determine the nature of the instruction librarians provide to veterinary medical students at all 28 United States veterinary colleges. A secondary goal of the study was to determine in what ways and to what extent librarians participated in other instructional activities at their colleges. Over half of the librarians formally taught in one or more courses, predominantly in the first two years of the veterinary curriculum. One presentation per course was most common. Over half of the librarians interviewed stated that evidence-based veterinary medicine was taught at their colleges, and about half of these librarians …

Using Course Syllabi To Assess Research Expectations Of Biology Majors: Implications For Further Development Of Information Literacy Skills In The Curriculum, Andrea L. Dinkelman

This article describes an analysis of course syllabi from selected courses in the biology curriculum at Iowa State University. The purpose of this research was to learn about the numbers and types of information literacy assignments given to students majoring in biology. Overall, the most common assignment type for biology majors was a lab report or lab exercise. Very few course syllabi mentioned the library as a useful resource for completing assignments. Only a few assignment directions recommended specific indexes such as Biosis Previews or Web of Science. Suggestions for improving the content of course syllabi and additional ideas about …

Information Literacy has been an important movement in academic libraries for at least the past decade. Still, no consensus has emerged about how to define information literacy or how broadly or narrowly to apply literacy theory to the work of librarians. In fact, the historical definitions of librarianship have tended to work against the integration of literacy theory into the daily practices of librarianship. Information literacy as pedagogy targets the novice learner, and provides guidance in evaluating sources. Critical thinking dispositions and hermeneutical considerations are then employed to evaluate the claims. The standard output is some type of communication format which is then evaluated for competence. This pedagogical model works well in those areas of study in which facts are readily verifiable through means consistent with scientism, such as medicine and technology, so as to assume a single correct answer. Every year we use assessment to improve library instruction for freshman English students. This presentation addresses the perennial problem that many instruction librarians face: “How can we assess student learning outcomes in a one-shot instruction session?” Loyola Marymount University’s Reference Department created a standardized introduction to the research process applicable to any topic, developed learning objectives, and measured them for three years. Information Literacy is critical for getting students to understand the “why” and “how” that should ground all service learning projects. This presentation will begin with an overview of the service learning movement. Next, I will present a case study of my experiences as an embedded librarian in an Environmental Studies Senior Seminar. Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library librarians worked closely with the George Washington University internal medicine residency program to provide training and support; however, many residents seemed unaware of the library's collections and services. To strengthen the relationship between the library and the program and to enhance residents' use of information resources, a librarian was assigned to attend the residents' daily morning meeting at least twice each week.

Digital and information literacies instruction is truly a daunting and multi-faceted undertaking. Many librarians have begun to scale back what can effectively be accomplished in a one-shot bibliographic session due to time constraints. Instead, some instructors have started to focus more deeply on teaching toward just a few information literacy skills (such as Evaluation) that can be accomplished in the limited timeframe available.
