Police, Ice, And Knox County: A Timeline Of The 287(G) And Detention Bed Contracts From 2017-2021, Taylor Dempsey
Police, Ice, And Knox County: A Timeline Of The 287(G) And Detention Bed Contracts From 2017-2021, Taylor Dempsey
Select or Award-Winning Individual Scholarship
The Knox County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) continues to heavily collaborate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), in spite of the consistent community opposition and ongoing legal ramifications that have resulted from Knox County’s 287(g) and detention bed contracts. Research on these programs and Knox County’s immigration enforcement involvement has largely focused on the logistics of enforcement mechanisms, the racism and xenophobia that construct the programs, and the legal challenges Knox County has faced as a result of their execution of the contracts. This creative project accumulates this research and utilizes public records received from Public Records Act and Freedom of …

“There Shall Be Made No Differentiation:” The Maintenance Of Stratification In The State Of Kuwait Through The 1959 Nationality And Aliens Residence Laws, Alzaina Shams Aldeen
Masters Theses
Article 29 of the Kuwaiti constitution states that “The people are peers in human dignity and have, in the eyes of the Law, equal public rights and obligations. There shall be made no differentiation among them because of gender, origin, language or religion.” If I were to say that the 17, 818 km ² that make up the State of Kuwait is home to 4.2 million people, it would be a misrepresentation. While 4.2 million people do live in Kuwait, citizenship and immigration laws restrict 70% of its population, to varying degrees, from making their country of residence a home. …

Denial Of Driver’S Licenses As A Denial Of Services For And Personhood Of Unauthorized Latinx Immigrants In Knoxville, Tennessee: A Literature Review, Blake Turpin
Haslam Scholars Projects
After the events of September 11, 2001, the United States enacted and expanded multiple policies and programs aimed at addressing national security concerns and racialized anti-immigrant sentiments. These included the creation of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the REAL ID Act of 2005, Section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, the Secure Communities Program, and the Criminal Alien Program, among others. These policies and programs, along with general anti-Latinx immigrant sentiments, have had far-reaching effects on the ability of this population to access basic needs, fully participate in society as members of the United States, and fully realize a …

Remittance Behavior Of Us Immigrants, Nathan Edward Trombley
Remittance Behavior Of Us Immigrants, Nathan Edward Trombley
Masters Theses
Remittances, the sending of a portion of an immigrant’s income to friends and family, have become an undeniable and significant part of the global economy. This is especially true in some common immigrant sending regions where remittances make up a dominant portion of the local economy. The New Immigrant Survey has released the second wave of data in its cohort study of immigrants recently achieving Lawful Permanent Residence status in the United States. In light of this newly available information, this study seeks to highlight demographic and background characteristics of immigrants that have a statistically significant relationship on their sending …
Immigrant Rights In The Nuevo South: Enforcement And Resistance At The Borderlands Of Illegality, Meghan Elizabeth Conley
Immigrant Rights In The Nuevo South: Enforcement And Resistance At The Borderlands Of Illegality, Meghan Elizabeth Conley
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines the ways that immigrant illegality is structured and resisted in new Latino destinations in the US Southeast. I analyze the US Southeast as a new frontera, or borderland, for Latina/o immigrants, a border that is structured by racialized discourses of difference and belongingness between newcomer Latinas/os and long established Anglo and black populations. Experienced by Latina/o immigrants as a space of non-belongingness, this borderland has become an important site in the modern production of immigrant illegality. In the Southeast, illegality arises from the enforcement of non-belongingness, and it is structured through new forms of immigration enforcement, …

On November 6, 1986, the President signed into law immigration reform legislation. The new law (P.L. 99-603, "Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986" ) makes it unlawful for any person knowingly to hire, recruit or refer for a fee any alien not authorized to work. It also requires that employees comply with the employment verification system as outlined by the law.
