You’Re Invited! Collaborating With Faculty And Students To Create A Successful Library Event, Laura Semrau

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

To celebrate the 400th anniversary of the printing of Shakespeare’s First Folio, the Baylor University Libraries hosted a three-day celebration; “Shakespeare 400” drew faculty members from six academic departments and leveraged the talents of both graduate and undergraduate students. The four main events drew a cumulative crowd of over 200 people. Graduate students contributed to the events through music performance, a dramatic reading, enthusiastic promotion, and engaged participation. This presentation will explore key take-aways for including graduate students in library events.

Presenters will examine the trend of “wearing many hats” in higher education leadership. For example, being both a department chair and faculty member. In addition, the notion of successfully managing up, the importance of understanding each role you have, and understanding your situational role and the communication we use will be discussed. Lastly, participants will engage in case study scenarios challenging participants to consider various administrative situations and identifying reasonable approaches based on which “hat” you are wearing.

Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)

The emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic initially caused widespread academic conference cancellations, leaving many University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) faculty members without a means to present scholarship required for the annual review process. Faculty members concerned about meeting their scholarship requirements appealed to campus administration for assistance. UTHSC’s Health Sciences Library (HSL) was able to step in and offer the library-managed UTHSC Digital Commons repository as a solution to this dilemma. The urgency of faculty concerns, combined with positive messaging about Digital Commons coming from campus administration, increased campus interest in the repository. My research used data available in the public domain to establish racial/ethnic inequality in pay and rank in the Social Science faculty and the Medical School in a university in Southwestern Ontario. I specifically focused on the faculty of Social Science and Medicine and Dentistry School as they are among the biggest faculties on campus. I retrieved faculty information from information available to the public and used this to determine salary, race, gender, rank, and tenure status (if applicable). Visible minorities were paid lower in the faculty of Social Science compared to their white counterparts. However, in the Medical School, …

Faculty and librarian collaboration is key in the quest for information literacy. As part of the reaccreditation effort at Lord Fairfax Community College -- a two-year institution in northwestern Virginia -- the QEP Leadership Team sought LFCC Librarians’ assistance in a multifaceted, 5-year, information literacy initiative. This effort included the addition of a librarian to the all-faculty QEP Leadership Team, the redesign of composition courses, and professional development through a new LFCC program: “Seeking the Truth: Faculty-Librarian Collaboration Mini-Grants.”

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) is an institution with 2 residential campuses: 1 in Daytona Beach, Florida and one in Prescott, Arizona. ERAU also has a Worldwide presence through 125 campuses located on military bases and within the private business sector. The ERAU Worldwide Campus doesn’t stop with physical locations, however. It encompasses an online campus with virtual learning opportunities. The degrees offered through all of our campuses range from certificate programs through doctoral studies.

This talk will discuss lessons learned from a complex collaboration between an archivist and a labor studies instructor to orient a class of graduate students to special collections and archival research. We were part of a nineteen institution ethnographic study on the research practices and support needs of agriculture faculty, under the auspices of Ithaka S+R in 2016. We will use our work to illustrate how ethnographic interviewing works. We will discuss:

  • Training and preparation
  • The process of recruiting and interviewing, and interview transcription.
  • Coding & analysis of results, mapping findings from the interview transcriptions
  • Our findings and conclusions which, though drawn from agriculture, are potentially applicable to a broader range of science researchers

The Data Information Literacy Toolkit was the interview instrument developed and used by the Data Information Literacy project to better understand the educational needs of graduate students in managing, working with and curating their data sets. Results from the interviews conducted at Purdue University, Cornell University, the University of Minnesota and the University of Oregon were used to inform the educational programs offered by librarians at each institution in 2012 or 2013.
