Stabilization Of Track Substructure With Geoinclusions- Experimental Evidence And Dem Simulation, Ngoc Trung Ngo, Buddhima Indraratna, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn

This article reviews on current knowledge of rail track geomechanics, including several important concepts and topics related to laboratory testing and computational modelling, to study the shear stress-strain and deformation of ballast improved by geosynthetics and recycled rubber mats. The effect that impact loads have on ballast degradation and its mitigation due to resilient synthetic mats (i.e. rubber mats) between the ballast and the subballast is investigated using large-scale impact-testing apparatus. Computational modelling with finite element and discrete element methods are increasingly being used to model ballasted tracks reinforced with geosynthetics to capture the continuum media of formation soils and …

Evidence Of Solid-Solution Reaction Upon Lithium Insertion Into Cryptomelane K0.25mn2o4 Material, Wei Kong Pang, Vanessa Peterson, Neeraj Sharma, Chaofeng Zhang, Zaiping Guo

Cryptomelane-type K0.25Mn2O4 material is prepared via a template-free, one-step hydrothermal method. Cryptomelane K0.25Mn2O4 adopts an I 4/m tetragonal structure with a distinct tunnel feature built from MnO6 units. Its structural stability arises from the inherent stability of the MnO6 framework which hosts potassium ions, which in turn permits faster ionic diffusion, making the material attractive for application as a cathode in lithium-ion batteries. Despite this potential use, the phase transitions and structural evolution of cryptomelane during lithiation and delithiation remains unclear. The coexistence of Mn3+ and Mn4+ in the compound during lithiation and delithiation processes induce different levels of Jahn-Teller …

Difference Between Far-Infrared Photoconductivity Spectroscopy And Absorption Spectroscopy: Theoretical Evidence Of The Electron Reservoir Mechanism, Tadashi Toyoda, Maho Fujita, Tomohisa Uchida, Nobuyoshi Hiraiwa, Taturo Fukuda, Hideki Koizumi, Chao Zhang

The intriguing difference between far-infrared photoconductivity spectroscopy and absorption spectroscopy in the measurement of the magnetoplasmon frequency in GaAs quantum wells reported by Holland et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 186804 (2004)] remains unexplained to date. This Letter provides a consistent mechanism to solve this puzzle. The mechanism is based on the electron reservoir model for the integer quantum Hall effect in graphene [Phys. Lett. A 376, 616 (2012)]. We predict sharp kinks to appear in the magnetic induction dependence of the magnetoplasmon frequency at very low temperatures such as 14 mK in the same GaAs quantum well sample used …

Evidence-Free Policy: The Case Of The National Injury Insurance Scheme, Mark Harrison Jan 2013

Evidence-Free Policy: The Case Of The National Injury Insurance Scheme, Mark Harrison

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The Productivity Commission report 'Disability Care and Support' recommends tort liability be replaced by a compulsory, government-run, no-fault scheme. But theory and evidence indicate moving to a no-fault scheme will increase the accident rate. Even a move from non-risk-rated third-party insurance to non-risk-rated first-party insurance reduces incentives for care. A no-fault scheme is not superior to current policies; genuine reform will need to be informed by law and economics literature.

Characterising Poly (Vinyl Chloride)/Aliquat 336 Polymer Inclusion Membranes: Evidence Of Phase Separation And Its Role In Metal Extraction, Nurul-Syazana Abdul-Halim, Philip G. Whitten, Long D. Nghiem Jan 2013

Characterising Poly (Vinyl Chloride)/Aliquat 336 Polymer Inclusion Membranes: Evidence Of Phase Separation And Its Role In Metal Extraction, Nurul-Syazana Abdul-Halim, Philip G. Whitten, Long D. Nghiem

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The miscibility of the base polymer poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) and the extractant Aliquat 336 in polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) was investigated by characterisation of thermal transitions using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The extractions of Cd (II) and Zn (II) using PVC/Aliquat 336 PIMs with different base polymer/extractant composition and different extraction temperature were also investigated. Changes in the PIM's heat capacity measured by DSC were small, thus, could only be used to determine the glass transition temperature (Tg) of PIMs with low Aliquat 336 content. On the other hand, DMA results clearly identify the …

Translating Evidence-Based Guidelines Into Practice: A Survey Of Practices Of Commissioners And Managers Of The English Stop Smoking Services, Mairtin S. Mcdermott, Heather Thomson, Robert West, Jennifer A. M Kenyon, Andy Mcewen Jan 2012

Translating Evidence-Based Guidelines Into Practice: A Survey Of Practices Of Commissioners And Managers Of The English Stop Smoking Services, Mairtin S. Mcdermott, Heather Thomson, Robert West, Jennifer A. M Kenyon, Andy Mcewen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Background: The English National Health Service's (NHS) Stop Smoking Services (SSSs) constitute one of the most highly developed behavioural support programmes in the world. However, there is significant variation in success rates across the approximately 150 services, some of which may be due to variation in practice. This study aimed to assess these differences in practice.

Methods: Two online surveys were administered. All commissioners (people who purchase services for the NHS) and managers (those who run the services) of NHS SSSs in England were invited to participate. Items included details of current practices and services provided, what informed the …

The Soft X-Ray Background: Evidence For Widespread Disruption Of The Gas Haloes Of Galaxy Groups, K K S Wu, A C. Fabian, Paul E. J Nulsen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Almost all of the extragalactic X-ray background (XRB) at 0.25 keV can be accounted for by radio-quiet quasars, allowing us to derive an upper limit of 4 keV cm−2 s−1 sr−1 keV−1 for the remaining background at 0.25 keV. However, the XRB from the gas haloes of groups of galaxies, with gas removal resulting from cooling accounted for, exceeds this upper limit by an order of magnitude if non-gravitational heating is not included. We calculate this using simulations of halo merger trees and realistic gas density profiles, which we require to reproduce the observed gas fractions …
