Previous research emphasizes that while people from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are legally classified as “white” on the U.S. Census. However, many people from the region do not identify as white, and they often face discrimination or threats of violence. James Lowry, the 2023 winner of the Waldo Gifford Leland Award of the Society of American Archivists, within the wider context of Anglophone North American archivists' provinciality. The book provides a series of well-researched case studies, some based on personal experiences, which illuminate the history of archives and cultural heritage collections that have been contested by multiple geopolitical entities or their archival representatives. Inclusion of stories from the global South is one of the innovative facets of the book that improves upon the volume Displaced Archives (2017), also edited by James Lowry.

However, the earnings from remittances, which measure to about 25% of Nepal’s GDP, are spent on consumer goods and not on investments that can generate employment and raise the standards of living. Though Western scholarship tends to homogenize South Asian experiences, researchers and novelists shed light on different classes of South Asian postcolonial and migratory women who experience mutability, or the internal and external changes as a trauma response after British colonial rule ended and the 1947 Partition abruptly fractured national identity. Though this mutability has positive and negative transformative qualities, it also allows women characters the power to remove themselves from cycles of oppression, work towards healing, and transforming their physical bodies from sites of repressed trauma to sites of expression and agency. In this paper, I provide a critique of the Young Lords by dissecting how the Young Lords shifted Puerto Rican identity from an assimilationist perspective to a politicized and decolonial one. Through understanding Puerto Rico (and consequently, Puerto Ricans) as an extension of what Anibal Quijano calls the 'coloniality of power’, I argue that the Young Lord’s develop a dichotomy between good vs. bad Puerto Ricans, where good Puerto Ricans are affirmed and legitimized as genuine Puerto Ricans, while bad Puerto Ricans are discredited and excluded from the movement. Puerto Rico has belonged to the United States for more than a century. In 1898, more than two decades after the Spanish American War, Spain formally ceded the island to the United States. Just over 20 years later, islanders officially became American citizens. Since then, the 100-mile-long by 35-mile-wide island has experienced economic and political crises, the COVID-19 pandemic, and life-threatening natural disasters. These events provoked a vast fluctuation in its population. Countering Dispossession: For Palestinians In The Diaspora, Maintaining Cultural Identity Is A Means Of Resistance, Reem Farhat

For decades, Palestinians have pushed back against Israeli appropriation of Palestinian culture, by calling it out online and making efforts to protect it through international organizations. On social media, Palestinians in the diaspora have resisted against erasure and appropriation of their heritage by learning, sharing, and teaching others about their culture online. Chef Nadia Gilbert, embroidery artist Asma Barakat, and TikToker Serena Rasoul have all maintained online presences dedicated to educating their followers on Palestinian culture. To them, practicing these aspects of their heritage in the diaspora is a means of resistance.

Liturgy Of The Dispersed: Memory, Transnationalism, And Cambodian Cuisine In The American Diaspora, Phalika Oum

Psychology, Criminal Justice & Sociology Student Scholarship

This study addresses Cambodian diasporic cuisine in the United States, recognizing cuisine as a way for Cambodians to maintain transnational ties in the era of mounting globalization. It is rooted in anthropologist Arjun Appadurai’s theories on imagination, culturalism, and globalization. Using purposive sampling and the grounded theory approach, this study compares 25 pre-diaspora recipes to 25 diaspora recipes, and assesses changes in ingredients, cooking methods, and cultural or historical notes, respectively. Major findings in diasporic recipes, in comparison to pre-diasporic recipes, includes more leniency in ingredients used, stricter instructions on cooking methods, and greater nostalgia for the homeland.

The two case studies chosen are Palestinian communities in New Jersey suburbs and the Palestinian refugees living in Lebanon. This dissertation examines the influence of Cuban-American exiles in shaping U.S. foreign policy toward Cuba from the 1980s to the present. The role of Cuban-American interest groups is analyzed within a larger context of U.S. national security objectives, national politics and Cuban politics. Instead of privileging domestic politics or national security politics in explaining Cuban-American influence, as other International Relations theories do, this study argues that Cuban exile politics can best be understood as an expression of subnational interest group power that affects, and is affected by, the shifting dynamics of local, national and global politics. It intervenes in the anthropology of home by focusing on both the social and physical aspects of home, its pain, joys, and ironies, and it speaks to the anthropology of genocide by showing how a population a century removed from a genocide uses it to interpret their experience.
