This professional action project focused on addressing the risks and needs facing local adolescents in my community. I partnered with several professionals and community members to host a parent night presentation at Timberlake High School. The presentation included an overview of risks and trends affecting our local youth, as well as statewide statistics on social media, mental health, vaping, substance use, and other risky behaviors. At the conclusion of the presentation, attendees were invited to ask questions, network with professionals, peruse the “paraphernalia” table, and collect resource handouts from several different supporting agencies in the local area. The presentation was …

An Analysis Of Income And Healthcare Disparities Across Minority Populations By Incorporating Community Resource Collaboration In Public Policy, Ohioze O. Obadan

Theses and Dissertations

There is widespread literature on the connection between public policy, resource allocation, and income and health inequalities among minority communities. While various services are created to help communities, the distribution and allocation of these services remain elusive, without any collaboration towards a common objective among public policy leaders. This paper investigates the disparities in the access to healthcare within Florida, a state selected because of its documented problems with healthcare access. This thesis research analyzes the income and health inequalities in minority populations in Florida by integrating community resource collaboration into public policy. The study used secondary data from public …

A Tale Of Two Libraries: A History Of The Public Library Systems Of Atlanta, Ga And Baltimore, Md And How Libraries Across America Adapt To Their Communities, Gigi Powell

History Undergraduate Honors Theses

Public libraries are a staple American institution, and one that was created to adapt and react to its surrounding communities. Public libraries are unique in their ability to anticipate and fill a community’s needs, as evidenced by their constant evolution to remain relevant and provide up- to-date services to all users. To highlight this evolution, librarians from both the Fulton County Public Library System in Atlanta, GA and the Enoch Pratt Free Library system were interviewed to gauge what the library’s role is in a modern world, in a world newly ravaged by COVID-19, and how that role has evolved …

Providing Tools To Sustain Community Organizations, Jeffrey Graf, Jen Jones Murray, Jennifer L. Murray, Karissa Moffett

Jennifer Murray

Communities are filled with valuable collections in need of being preserved, sustained, and discovered. Through conversations in the community, partnerships can form and bring together diverse people to enhance the discovery of materials in our own backyards. This is precisely what happened with the Jacksonville, Florida based Jacksonville Historical Society (JHS) when they were working on an initiative to survey local history organizations regarding the scope and nature of their historical collections. Through a partnership with the Riverside Avondale Preservation (RAP) and conversation with the University of North Florida Thomas G. Carpenter Library (UNF Library), a powerful, community collaboration formed. …

Providing Tools To Sustain Community Organizations, Jennifer L. Murray

Jennifer Murray

Through conversations in the community, partnerships can form and bring together diverse people to enhance the discovery of materials in our own backyards. When we learned of a community-based initiative by our local history consortium, we saw it as an opportunity to join in and provide leadership in preserving, sustaining, and bringing greater awareness to the history collections in our region. During this session you will learn how we used tools we have, such as Digital Commons, LibGuides and Tableau, to benefit the many valuable organizations and resources in our community that often go undiscovered.

Hiv Infection, Negative Life Events, And Intimate Relationship Power: The Moderating Role Of Community Resources For Black South African Women, Bethany Ketchen

Psychology Dissertations

Background: Black South Africans were forced to live under the oppressive regime of apartheid for more than four decades. This system of government not only restricted the economic and educational opportunities for Blacks, but it also marginalized women by encouraging the preservation of a violent, patriarchal society. As a result of a long history of nationalized oppression, Black women in South Africa continue to be an economically and socially vulnerable group. Their vulnerability is translated into limited intimate relationship power, which confers a host of health and safety risks. Thus, the current study explored whether negative life events and/or HIV …
