Abstract

Purpose -- This think piece explores the question of whether or not librarians can ethically remain politically neutral in the wake of the 45th administration. The authors take a critical look at ALA’s Code of Ethics, as well as the concept of vocational awe, and recommend challenging the “sacredness” of neutrality as a core tenet of the profession. Additionally, the authors describe the history of white privilege within libraries and argue that it is time to actively fight white supremacy and disavow the profession’s history of replicating racist social structures.

This paper explores the question: What beliefs, values and assumptions do social workers hold when assessing whether or not a person who is a mental health client has the right to suicide? The current literature reveals that individuals struggling with physical disorders deemed extreme and untreatable are likely to be accepted as rational grounds for suicide. This study was designed to investigate the perception and practice of Information Ethics by librarians in four higher institutions in Oyo State, Nigeria. Survey research design was adopted with population size consisted of 47 librarians under population of the study; total enumeration sampling technique was used. Questionnaire and interview for four (4) Senior Librarians were the instruments adopted for data collection. Out of 47 copies of the questionnaire that were distributed, 46 were returned, and considered suitable for data analysis. This inquiry focuses specifically on administrative (local official) narratives that speak to contentious issue contexts of social conflict. Specifically, it draws upon a theoretical connection between hermeneutics and the sociology of knowledge to interpret narrative passages of local officials and others related to a contentious public action—the Detroit Water and Sewerage District’s stepped-up water-discontinuation efforts (2014 and 2015) that left thousands of inner-city residents with “delinquent” accounts and no access to water service. This paper is a concluding part of pilot study assessing awareness and application of some legal and ethical principles in professional codes to information service delivery by library information science professionals in Nigeria. Descriptive survey utilising questionnaire was adopted to gather data from 429 library and information science professionals in 24 federal universities in Nigeria. The questionnaire items were excerpts from IFLA/FAIFE Statements. Simple frequencies, percentages and correlation were used in data analysis. Self-determination is an integral part of the ethical foundation of the social work profession. However, the NASW Code of Ethics remains unclear in its definition of this and other important terms, such as social responsibility and professional judgment, that are often raised in discussions of self-determination and its implications to clinical social work practice. This analysis of twelve articles published in social work journals between the years 2000 and 2012 explores the field's current understanding of these terms and their implications as they are reflected in the current literature.

Cataloging is the foundation of librarianship, and catalogers are professionals with special skills that set them apart from the profession in general and give them unique ethical responsibilities. They have power to help or harm on an increasingly global scale, yet very little has been written about the ethical issues faced by catalogers. This paper explores the ethics of cataloging, including encoding, subject analysis, authority control, and copy-cataloging, and examines descriptive and normative aspects in view of James Moor’s just-consequentialist theory and J.J. Britz’s ideas on ethical issues relating to intellectual freedom. A code of ethics for cataloging is offered.
