"Me? Be A Coach?" A Grounded Theory Investigation Of Coach Identity Among Managers Who Coach, Sara Mary Cannon
"Me? Be A Coach?" A Grounded Theory Investigation Of Coach Identity Among Managers Who Coach, Sara Mary Cannon
Industrial-Organizational Psychology Dissertations
In the 21st century, organizational expectations of managers have shifted away from traditional command-and-control toward a model of facilitating employee development (Ibarra & Scoular, 2019). Modern managers are expected to be good coaches, even though the coaching discipline is growing faster than it can be regulated (Garvin, 2013; Sherman & Freas, 2004). This research investigated the lived experiences of managers who coach and their emergent concept of identity through the lens of manager as instrument. I utilized a constructivist grounded theory approach to generate insights about coach identity experiences of managers who coach. This perspective and methodology provided an opportunity …

Functional Effects Of Personality On Individual And Team Sport Success, Alex I. Mckenzie
Functional Effects Of Personality On Individual And Team Sport Success, Alex I. Mckenzie
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: Though the relationship between the personality traits (PTs) of the Five Factor Model (FFM) and athletic performance is well documented, the functional role of PTs in athletic team settings has received scarce empirical attention. The limited research that has been conducted is often criticized for methodological flaws, such as failure to differentiate between sports (e.g., Team vs. Individual Sports).
Objective: To investigate the functional impact of personality on Team and Individual Sport performance in sport-specific settings. The principal objective was to investigate the distinct functional role of the FFM PTs and their influence on team success, based on type …

A review of the counseling literature is offered to explain the behaviors each type of student is likely to engage in. Counseling principles and technique are offered to provide a framework for coaches to use as they teach these kinds of students and address safety …

This study took a multimethod exploratory approach, examining multiple sources of data gathered from a Likert scale members’ survey, leadership team interviews, and archival materials. To support triangulation of the data, a word query and emergent thematic analysis …
Have We Been Offering Too Much Help?, Patricia Kalanquin
Have We Been Offering Too Much Help?, Patricia Kalanquin
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
Should the speech writing process be a completely collaborative effort between coach and student? Should an oral interpretation selection used successfully by one student be filed away and given to another student for competition two or three years later? If any of these situations sound familiar to you, it is probably because you are an individual events (IE) coach. Often as IE coaches, we are called upon to answer questions, like the ones above, that may not have one right answer. Questions like these, bring up issues of ethical standards. As an IE coach, I find it is most difficult …

From Playing To Directing: A Qualitative Inquiry Into The Athlete To Coach Transition, Jamie M. Zalasin
From Playing To Directing: A Qualitative Inquiry Into The Athlete To Coach Transition, Jamie M. Zalasin
Theses and Dissertations
The following dissertation explored six (n = 6), current, professional baseball coaches' experience with transitioning from playing to coaching. Some experiences associated with athletic transitions based on the literature include missing sport or competition, body changes, social status changes, and vocational concerns (Wylleman & Reints, 2010; Park & Lavallee, 2015). Additionally, the salience of one's athletic identity can create difficulties such as identity loss, emotional distress, and grief (Lally, 2007; Fortunato & Marchant, 1998; Grove, Lavalle, & Gordon, 1997). Within vocational concerns, there can be uncertainty about the next career's link to sports. For many professional athletes, their age of …
Student Success Coaching In Virginia Community Colleges, Angela Lawhorne
Student Success Coaching In Virginia Community Colleges, Angela Lawhorne
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
Community college students face many barriers when they start college, especially if they are from first-generation families, are low-income, or identify as a minority. Retention and completion for these at-risk students are relatively low compared to those with higher socioeconomic backgrounds (Bettinger & Baker, 2014). To improve these statistics and promote academic persistence, some Virginia Community College System (VCCS) colleges have implemented student success coaching under the Chancellor’s College Success Coach Initiative (VCCS, 2011). This entails not only assisting students with academic coaching, but also with career, financial, and personal matters that may affect their academic success. The researcher sought …

Why Does Coaching Work? An Examination Of Inputs And Process Variables In An Employee Coaching Program, Sarah E. Frick
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The efficacy of leadership coaching to improve leader and organizational outcomes cannot be overstated. However, a thorough understanding of some of the inputs and process variables involved in coaching has not been empirically established to date. To address this issue in the leader development and coaching literature, I examined the characteristics of the coaches and the coachees and their relationships with two relational variables potentially involved in coaching relationships (i.e., leader-member exchange and trust). The importance of leadership to work outcomes and leader development is highlighted, followed by a discussion of the specific leader development technique of coaching. The discussion …

The Sherpa Meets Maslow: Medicine And The Hierarchy Of Needs, Rana Lee Adawi Awdish Md Fccp
Patient Experience Journal
A critical care physician returning to medicine after her own critical illness experiences a crisis of orientation. She finds she can no longer serve as the Voice of Medicine. She replaces the former construct with a more humble model, in which the physician serves as an intermediary. She equates this new role to that of the Sherpas of Nepal. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs forms the mountain, as she reimagines her role in her patients’ lives.

An Evaluation Of The Effects Of The Coach-Athlete Relationship On Athlete Mental Health, Corey Rae Phillips
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
There is a demand to target the mental health needs of collegiate athletes, who are
considered to be at-risk for physiological injuries, psychological disturbances, and
academic problems. Due to the dynamic nature of the coach-athlete relationship,
assessing the impact coaches have on athletes’ psychological wellbeing is imperative to
shift the way mental health is addressed within this population. The current study aims to
address the relationship between perceived problems in the coach-athlete relationship and
mental health of college students who participate in organized sport. I hypothesize that
problems in the relationship have serious implications for athletes and mental health
providers …
Teaching A Human Rights Education Through Youth Athletics, Jacob J. Beaman
Teaching A Human Rights Education Through Youth Athletics, Jacob J. Beaman
Master's Projects and Capstones
Throughout my research and work in education I realized there is often a disconnect between schooling and students especially in low-income areas. It can be incredibly difficult to feel confident at school when the curriculum is not relatable to your experiences and life. In this paper I explore how an athletic program can be used to teach a Human Rights Education to fill in the gaps the traditional school day may not provide. I used a Human Rights Education framework with the teacher/coach as a facilitator and a Critical Race Theory lens examining intersectionality, counter-story telling, and interest convergence in …

There are many responsibilities and duties for the director of forensics. One such responsibility that every coach will have to give very careful consideration and attention is the budget necessary for a sound forensic program. Yes, the question of funds is very important when one considers beginning and maintaining a sound forensic program in any college or university.
