Waste is obsolete. Standard building industry practices are harmful to the environment. Non-traditional construction methods were examined as alternatives. Circular design logic was the guiding principle in material choice. Additive manufacturing is a proven modern method for building construction. Research on 3D printing case studies revealed that recycled plastic is a proven material and readily available. Removing plastic waste from the environment and sequestering it in architectural components gives the material a new purpose. The component of focus was a building block for a wall assembly. Inspiration was taken from the hexagonal Basalt rock formations found near volcanic fault lines. …

An Assessment Of A Volleyball Player’S Loads In A Match On The Basis Of The Number And Height Of Jumps Measured In Real-Time Conditions, Krzysztof Wnorowski, Piotr Aschenbrenner, Jerzy Skrobecki, Mirella Stech
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: The value of volleyball players’ reach is often critical to their efficient functioning in the game. It depends on the jumping ability factor and the player’s body build. An analysis of this parameter is particularly difficult to carry out in real conditions of the game. The objective of the research was to determine the height of reach in basic technical and tactical actions of leading Polish volleyball players during a match in regard to their maximum values measured in laboratory conditions. Material/Methods: The study involved five volleyball players, Polish representatives of different specialization in the game: the attacker, the …
Whitmore Tension Section And Block Shear, Matthew Elliott, Lip H. Teh
Whitmore Tension Section And Block Shear, Matthew Elliott, Lip H. Teh
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B
This paper examines the validity of the Whitmore net section tension capacity for the design of bolted gusset plates. Using simple algebra, this paper first shows that the Whitmore criterion and the correct block shear criterion would give similar results for a standard connection having approximately seven rows of bolts. It then shows that the Whitmore criterion severely underestimates the actual capacities of connections having two or three bolt rows tested by independent researchers. Conversely, it also shows that the same criterion overestimates the capacities of connections having nine bolt rows that were believed by the testing researchers to fail …

Exact Error Performance Analysis Of Binary Space-Time Block Coded Cooperative Communications Systems In Rayleigh Fading Channels, Le Chung Tran, Zixuan Lin, Farzad Safaei, Alfred Mertins, Duy T. Ngo
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
Cooperative communications using the Alamouti space-time block code (STBC) has been mentioned intensively. However, to our knowledge, an in-depth error performance analysis for a space-time coded cooperative communications system, where each node acts as both a source node and a relay node for its partner, has not been reported. Intuitively, cooperative communications would not always be better than direct transmission, but only under certain conditions. This paper first derives an exact performance analysis of the Alamouti STBC cooperative communications for a Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) constellation, which could be extended to a higher density modulation scheme. This mathematical analysis …

Closure To "Active Shear Planes Of Bolted Connections Failing In Block Shear" By Drew D. A. Clements And Lip H. Teh, Drew Clements, Lip H. Teh
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
The writers thank the discusser for the interest in the original paper and for the discussion, which provides the opportunity to clarify and reiterate a few points made in the original paper. The writers agree with the discusser that the behavior of bolted connections is not as simple as they appear to be to the casual observer, which is one reason why many structural collapses have been associated with connection failures. Furthermore, a substantial number of code equations for various ultimate limit states of bolted connections lead to considerable errors on either side of conservatism (Teh and Clements 2012; Teh …
Active Shear Planes Of Bolted Connections Failing In Block Shear, Drew D. Clements, Lip H. Teh
Active Shear Planes Of Bolted Connections Failing In Block Shear, Drew D. Clements, Lip H. Teh
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
In the steel design codes worldwide, the shear area for calculating the block shear capacity of a bolted connection is either the gross or the net shear area. The authors have previously noted independent experimental evidence indicating the shear failure planes to lie midway between the gross and the net shear planes, termed the active shear planes. This paper presents the nonlinear contact finite brick element analysis results that confirm the location of the active shear planes, indicated by regions of maximum shear stresses. The finite-element analysis also found that shear stresses approach zero toward the free downstream end of …
Block Shear Capacity Of Bolted Connections In Hot-Rolled Steel Plates, Lip H. Teh, Veysel Yazici
Block Shear Capacity Of Bolted Connections In Hot-Rolled Steel Plates, Lip H. Teh, Veysel Yazici
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
This paper extends the research previously conducted at the University of Wollongong on block shear failure of bolted connections in cold-reduced steel sheets with low ductility to hot-rolled steel plates. It examines the applicability of the basic approach employed for cold-reduced sheet steel bolted connections, which makes use of the so-called active shear planes, to hot-rolled steel plate connections. The active shear planes lie midway between the gross and the net shear planes defined in the steel structures specifications. The paper shows that shear yielding leading to the block shear failure of a bolted connection in a hot-rolled steel gusset …
A Random Effect Block Bootstrap For Clustered Data, Raymond L. Chambers, Hukum Chandra
A Random Effect Block Bootstrap For Clustered Data, Raymond L. Chambers, Hukum Chandra
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
Random effects models for hierarchically dependent data, e.g. clustered data, are widely used. A popular bootstrap method for such data is the parametric bootstrap based on the same random effects model as that used in inference. However, it is hard to justify this type of bootstrap when this model is known to be an approximation. In this paper we describe a random effect block bootstrap approach for clustered data that is simple to implement, free of both the distribution and the dependence assumptions of the parametric bootstrap and is consistent when the mixed model assumptions are valid. Results based on …

The Evolution And Utilization Of The Gatt/Wto Dispute Settlement Mechanism, Pao-Li Chang
The Evolution And Utilization Of The Gatt/Wto Dispute Settlement Mechanism, Pao-Li Chang
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper provides a theoretical framework of dispute settlement to explain the surge in blocking incidence of GATT panel reports during the 1980s and the variations in withdrawn incidence versus total disputes across different decades of the GATT regime. The study first suggests the role of the degree of legal controversy over a panel ruling in determining countries' incentives to block (appeal) a panel report under the GATT (WTO) regime. The study then analyzes the effects of political power on countries' incentives to use, and their interactions in using, the dispute settlement mechanism, when two-sided asymmetric information exists regarding panel …

743 ± 17 Ma Granite Clast From Jurassic Conglomerate, Kamiaso, Mino Terrane, Japan: The Case For South China Craton Provenance (Korean Gyeonggi Block?), Allen Phillip Nutman, Y Sano, K Terada, H Hidaka
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
The polymict Kamiaso Conglomerate (Mino Terrane, Japan) contains Jurassic to Palaeoproterozoic clasts—probably derived from Korean basement that lay nearby to the northwest at time of deposition. Clast K2 broke cleanly into two halves during sampling (but the halves were recombined for zircon separation). A third of the K2 zircons are colourless euhedral prisms with oscillatory zoning, with no inheritance and yielded a SHRIMP U/Pb date of 743±17 Ma. Two thirds of K2 zircons are brown oscillatory-zoned corroded prisms with a date of 1860±8 Ma, with inherited cores up to ∼2460 Ma. A likely explanation for this could be that clast …
Geological And Land Instability Mapping Using A Gis Package As A Building Block For The Development Of A Risk Assessment Procedure, R N. Chowdhury, P N. Flentje
Geological And Land Instability Mapping Using A Gis Package As A Building Block For The Development Of A Risk Assessment Procedure, R N. Chowdhury, P N. Flentje
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
A modern land instability risk assessment procedure must include an accurate geological framework and land instability database. Geological and land instability mapping of the northern suburbs of the City of Wollongong represents a considerable challenge and is to be achieved using computer generated 1:4000 topographic base maps. Using an integrated series of techniques, including computer modelling of the escarpment geology and field mapping techniques, a new series of geological maps has been produced. Meanwhile an exhaustive land instability database of the region has been compiled. A flexible approach to mapping and data compilation is very useful and confirms the viability …
