Barriers For Library And Information Science Researchers From Developing Countries: What The “Library Philosophy And Practice Phenomenon” Tells Us, Brady Lund

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This short commentary introduces and discusses the “Library Philosophy and Practice (LPP) Phenomenon,” wherein a scholarly journal published in a developed country has an extremely large number of authors from developing countries, relative to the typical journal. Elements of journals that fit the LPP phenomenon are discussed, as well as what this phenomenon says about barriers to scholarly publishing for researchers from developing nations. Implications for journals that lack diverse authorship from developing nations are listed. This phenomenon may be studied in other disciplines to further illuminate divides in the scholarly realm.

Exploiting Semantic Similarity Between Citation Contexts For Direct Citation Weighting And Residual Citation, Toluwase Victor Asubiaro

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This study used the semantic similarity between citation contexts to develop one scheme for weighting direct citations, and another scheme for allocating residual citations to a publication from its nth citation generation level publication. A relationship between the new direct citation weighting scheme and each of five existing schemes was investigated while the new residual citation scheme was compared with the cascading citation scheme. Two datasets from biomedical publications were used for this study, one each for the direct and residual citation weighting aspects of the study. The sample for the direct citation aspect contained 100 publications that received 7317 …

Highly Cited Publications Index (Hcp) For Individual Evaluation: Applications In Brazilian Information Metric Studies, João Melo Maricato, Priscila Rodrigues Dos Santos

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The use of different bibliometric indicators to analyze the individual scientific production of researchers constantly raises questions among several authors. Based on this problem, Waltman, Van Eck and Wouters (2013) propose a methodology that values highly cited papers (high impact) over low cited papers (low impact). To this end, the authors developed a stylized Highly Cited Publications (HCP) index aiming to minimize some limitations inherent to the metrics used to evaluate scientists. The present work proposes to carry out the empirical application of the HCP index stylized by the authors to researchers in the field of Information Metrics Studies (IMS) …
