Measuring The Value Of Professional Indexing, Philip Hider, Pru Mitchell, Robert Parkes Oct 2019

Measuring The Value Of Professional Indexing, Philip Hider, Pru Mitchell, Robert Parkes

Pru Mitchell

This study provides both a quantitative estimate and qualitative analysis of the additional ‘retrieval power’ that professionally assigned subject indexing affords users of a typical database in the field of education. A full version of Informit’s A+ Education database and one stripped of its subject indexing were searched by four research assistants tasked with compiling exhaustive bibliographies on forty-eight topics. The searchers were then surveyed about their use of the two databases, while their bibliographies and search logs were also examined. A two-way ANOVA model was constructed to estimate the percentage of additional resources found by the searchers on the …

Sexual Minority Health: A Bibliography And Preliminary Study Of The Book Literature, Sharon A. Weiner Apr 2016

Sexual Minority Health: A Bibliography And Preliminary Study Of The Book Literature, Sharon A. Weiner

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

The literature on the health of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersexual (LGBT) people appears in many types of resources and disciplines. To begin to address the need for relevant, easily accessible information for LGBT people and health care providers, this study identified popular and scholarly books published in the past 10 years and analyzed topics; number of books published per year; more prolific authors; and primary publishers. The results indicated that a relatively small number of books were published (521) by a wide range of publishers/self-publishers. Most were about mental health, relationships, or family and 24% were personal accounts.

Linking Old Librarianship To New: Aligning 5-Steps Of The Innovator's Dna In Creating Thematic Discovery Systems For The Everglades, L. Bryan Cooper, Margarita Perez Martinez

Works of the FIU Libraries

This poster presentation from the May 2015 Florida Library Association Conference, along with the Everglades Explorer discovery portal at http://ee.fiu.edu, demonstrates how traditional bibliographic and curatorial principles can be applied to: 1) selection, cross-walking and aggregation of metadata linking end-users to wide-spread digital resources from multiple silos; 2) harvesting of select PDFs, HTML and media for web archiving and access; 3) selection of CMS domains, sub-domains and folders for targeted searching using an API.

Choosing content for this discovery portal is comparable to past scholarly practice of creating and publishing subject bibliographies, except metadata and data are housed in …

Citations In A Cinch: From Bibliographies To Faculty Engagement, Brianne N. Hagen

Faculty Presentations

At Hope College, faculty are overwhelmed with the sheer number of places they must submit their publication information, including the institutional repository. A new project to generate citations for faculty chairs has been undertaken with two goals in mind: 1) create bibliographies for departments to use in annual reports, and 2) establish DC as the go-to place to find out what faculty have accomplished in the last year on campus, thereby eliminating the need to submit publication information elsewhere. The goals of this poster are to show the workflow of creating citations, how I worked with bepress to get what …

Science And Technology Resources On The Internet: Biodiversity Web Resources, John Creech

Library Scholarship

Biodiversity, a contraction of the phrase "biological diversity," was first used by Walter G. Rosen during a planning meeting for the 1986 National Forum on BioDiversity held in Washington, DC, while the first appearance of the word in the print literature likely occurred with the 1988 publication of the proceedings of this conference (Hawksworth 1995). The term "biodiversity" first appeared in the Biodiversity Web Resources http://www.istl.org/12-fall/internet.html 1 of 15 3/11/14 11:26 AM BIOSIS database in 1988 with four references, but by April of 1994 the count of citations had increased to 888 (Hawksworth 1995).

Over the last decade scientists have …

Promoting Faculty Scholarship Through The University Author Recognition Bibliography At Boise State University, Michelle Armstrong, Julia Stringfellow

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

One of the most important contributions by any university is its faculty members' scholarship. Providing an interface to view the full scope of an institution's academic accomplishments is vital for promoting both the scholarship and the university at large. Because of their unique information skills and services, librarians can facilitate the discovery of this scholarship on behalf of their institutions. This article explores how Albertsons Library at Boise State University utilizes an institutional repository to produce a faculty publication bibliography. Processes for collecting academic scholarship and organizing the citations within a repository structure are also discussed. Library staff found that …

Effective stewardship of caves and karst areas requires access to and efficient analysis of a diverse range of information. Vital data are scattered throughout specialty mainstream journals, which even for a single project could include fields such as ecology, hydrogeology, contaminant transport, toxicology, engineering geology and law. Additionally, volumes of crucial information often lie in difficult-to-find gray literature. Management recommendations and decisions should be based on assessments of state-of-the-art information, but fall short when important patterns and relationships are overlooked.

The Karst Information Portal (KIP) offers a solution to these problems. Conceived in 2005 and launched in June 2007, KIP …

Creating A Traditional Reference Tool In The Age Of Electronics: The Changing Art Of Bibliography Preparation, Antoinette Paris Powell Dec 1987

Creating A Traditional Reference Tool In The Age Of Electronics: The Changing Art Of Bibliography Preparation, Antoinette Paris Powell

Library Faculty and Staff Publications

Bibliographies are still a convenient, compact format for retrospective information on a topic. Modern technology does not diminish the need for comprehensive bibliOgraphies, although the creation of a bibliography can be made easier by putting some of the technology to work. The intellectual effort remains, and so does the laborious task of verification, but the mechanics of producing such a work can be streamlined. A word processor can replace the beleaguered secretary who must type and retype the effort; a database management program can aid in the restructuring of the bibliography; and the commercial databases can provide access to collections …
