Taking Flight As A Campus Partner: Library Programs Support A Residential Curriculum, Katy Kelly, Heidi Gauder

In this chapter, librarians discuss the process of taking part in a university co-curricular residential learning program that effectively tripled attendance at library workshops and continues to challenge and inspire librarians to try new topics and partnerships. By connecting the programs to campus learning goals, the number of library events grew 50% over one year, with individuals from multiple library departments hosting or supporting the events. The authors also include descriptions of efforts related to planning, marketing and assessment of these programs and offer some benefits and challenges to UD’s program model. In Summer of 2020, the University of South Dakota worked with the Post-Landfill Action Network (PLAN) to support Anna Moore, the Campus Recycling Coordinator and a graduate student in the Department of Sustainability & Environment, to conduct a holistic assessment of the campus’ waste management system. Anna used PLAN’s Zero Waste Atlas Program, a program designed to help campuses assess and streamline campus systems for materials management, to collect the information used to inform this report. Graduate student library needs often differ from those of undergraduates and faculty. Focus groups at three separate institutions seek to better understand the needs of a user population whose demands are often great, but whose voices are not always heard. Presenters will highlight commonalities and differences in the findings, identify opportunities for libraries to better serve this population and suggest methods for taking what is learned about graduate student needs and translating them into action.
