A Survey To Assess Adhd Symptoms And Detect Feigning In Adult Adhd: Initial Scale Development, Michelle Babcock
A Survey To Assess Adhd Symptoms And Detect Feigning In Adult Adhd: Initial Scale Development, Michelle Babcock
Antioch University Full-Text Dissertations & Theses
Adult attention-deficit / hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnoses have significantly increased over the last 20 years, and in some cases, adults seek an ADHD diagnosis to procure stimulant medication and academic accommodations. With the ease of access to the internet, adults can acquire the knowledge to misrepresent symptoms for secondary gain. The falsification of symptoms or feigning is problematic for the individual seeking the diagnosis, the psychological profession, and society at large. This study aimed to develop a multipurpose self-report scale comprised of the DSM-5 ADHD criteria, executive functioning, and embedded symptom validity indexes to assess ADHD and detect feigned responses. …
Confusing Conversations: Assessing Traumatic Stress In Young Children, Jennifer Lela Moniz
Confusing Conversations: Assessing Traumatic Stress In Young Children, Jennifer Lela Moniz
Antioch University Full-Text Dissertations & Theses
Early detection and interventions are important for the prevention of negative long-term effects of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Current evaluations of PTSD in young children rely heavily on caregiver reports, and there are few self-report measures for children under 8 years old (Mash & Barkley, 2007). This study examined the construct validity of the Post Traumatic Symptom Inventory for Children (PT-SIC), a self-report measure of PTSD symptomatology for young children, through a comparison of results with the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Young Children (TSCYC), an empirically supported caregiver measure of child PTSD symptomatology. Results of the Spearman correlation indicated that …
The Provision Of Psychological Assessment Feedback To Children: A Survey Of Practitioners, Caitlin P. Dolan
The Provision Of Psychological Assessment Feedback To Children: A Survey Of Practitioners, Caitlin P. Dolan
Antioch University Full-Text Dissertations & Theses
Psychological assessment, long a cornerstone of psychological practice, has been the subject of substantial empirical research and clinical devotion. Far less attention, however, has been given to the process of assessment feedback—the task of communicating psychological test results to clients. Research has demonstrated the therapeutic value of providing clients with feedback, including improved insight and functioning. Providing assessment feedback is also mandated by professional standards. Still, to date, there is minimal published research examining the actual feedback practices of psychologists, or their perspectives on such practices. That which does exist focuses on adult testing clients, not children. It is largely …
Internalized Homophobia Of Lgb Emerging Adults: Identity Complexities And Mental Health, Emily Christine Newbury
Internalized Homophobia Of Lgb Emerging Adults: Identity Complexities And Mental Health, Emily Christine Newbury
Antioch University Full-Text Dissertations & Theses
Meyer’s (2003) minority stress model explores the relationship between the social stress of sexual minorities and mental health. Internalized homophobia is linked to feelings of shame, guilt, and worthlessness, and contributes to the development of mental health problems (Ramirez-Valles, Molina, & Dirkes, 2013). The present study examined the relationship between internalized homophobia and mental health in young adults who identify as LGB. Participants (N =130) were recruited from universities in Connecticut and Georgia, as well as from the Amazon Mechanical Turk website. It was hypothesized that higher levels of internalized homophobia would be related to higher levels of self-reported anxiety, …
Striving For Credibility In The Face Of Ambiguity: A Grounded Theory Study Of Extreme Hardship Immigration Psychological Evaluations, Susan M. Burke
Striving For Credibility In The Face Of Ambiguity: A Grounded Theory Study Of Extreme Hardship Immigration Psychological Evaluations, Susan M. Burke
Antioch University Full-Text Dissertations & Theses
Psychological evaluations are frequently used in extreme hardship immigration cases in the United States. These evaluations are complex; they are inherently ambiguous, and they require extensive training and specialized knowledge. General guidance for mental health professionals is available from professional organizations, the federal government, and articles in the legal and mental health literature. However, there is a lack of detailed guidance, best practices, training, and supervision so many evaluators learn on their own. Unfortunately, this has resulted in assessment processes and evaluation reports that vary widely in terms of professionalism and quality which negatively impacts the vulnerable families seeking these …

Noninvasive Collection Of Saliva In Panthera Leo : Creation And Validation Of A Novel Technique For Health Assessment In Captive African Lions (Panthera Leo), Elizabeth Sgambelluri
Antioch University Full-Text Dissertations & Theses
Very little research exists concerning direct correlations between alterations in stress stimuli and direct effects on carnivore physiology. Many studies have researched and documented what factors correlate to increased stress levels in predator species. Lacking, however, are studies observing the specific physiologic influences of increased glucocorticoid concentrations in those individuals. Furthermore, methods for monitoring and assessing health or immune function in many carnivore species often involve invasive techniques, such as physical restraint, blood sampling, and chemical immobilization. This study aimed to create, evaluate, and describe a new device for noninvasive collection of saliva for health assessment. The device itself was …
Attune With Baby: An Innovative Attunement Program For Parents And Families With Integrated Evaluation, Sara Beth Lohre
Attune With Baby: An Innovative Attunement Program For Parents And Families With Integrated Evaluation, Sara Beth Lohre
Antioch University Full-Text Dissertations & Theses
Infants speak in their own language; sounds, screeches, cries, and howls that help them to communicate their caregiving needs. Unaware, parents may develop a checklist of caregiving approaches to the baby. The infant tells the adult directly what they need, and waits for the parent to respond. Infant talk may change from soft and quiet to loud and aggressive; coos and cries become crying and screams as the infant’s caregiver—communicating the intensity of emotion, urgency of their request, or their frustration with varied and sometimes inadequate, failed, or missing caregiving patterns the infant has no choice but to accept. When …
Characteristics Of Contemporary U.S. Progressive Middle Schools, Jan Ware Russell
Characteristics Of Contemporary U.S. Progressive Middle Schools, Jan Ware Russell
Antioch University Full-Text Dissertations & Theses
Progressive education has a long history within the American K-12 education system dating back to the late 1800s. During this period, two very distinct ideologies represented progressive education: 1) administrative progressives supporting standardization as a means of efficiency and 2) pedagogical progressives supporting child-centered learning based upon a well-rounded education. This study looks at 82 contemporary pedagogical progressive schools to identify common characteristics. Child-centered learning, community integration, and democratic decision-making were the three overarching philosophies covered in this study. Data was collected through an online survey of school leaders. The majority of research surrounding progressive education is qualitative and focuses …
Rational Understanding In Competency To Stand Trial: A Qualitative Study And Development Of An Assessment Instrument, Kenneth C. Cole Jr.
Rational Understanding In Competency To Stand Trial: A Qualitative Study And Development Of An Assessment Instrument, Kenneth C. Cole Jr.
Antioch University Full-Text Dissertations & Theses
Mental competency as a prerequisite for due process was established by the United States Supreme Court‟s Dusky decision (1960). The Court mandated that a defendant must possess reasonable levels of factual and rational understanding in order to competently participate in the adjudication process. The precise definitions of competence were not included in any of the Court‟s decisions regarding the concept of Competency to Stand Trial (CST). The original purpose of this research was to contribute knowledge regarding the psychological dimensions of CST and to suggest definitions of the psychological dimensions of CST and the standardization of the CST evaluation process. …
Selecting Leadership: An Analysis Of Predictors In Assessing Leadership Potential, Andrea L. Zavakos
Selecting Leadership: An Analysis Of Predictors In Assessing Leadership Potential, Andrea L. Zavakos
Antioch University Full-Text Dissertations & Theses
The purpose of this study was to identify predictors of leadership using a newly developed assessment for leadership selection within the healthcare industry by comparing assessment scores to supervisor rankings of the subjects. The study population consisted of 195 employees of 11 different hospitals. Each of the participants completed the Healthcare Leadership Inventory (HLI) assessment; their immediate supervisors completed performance ratings for them. None of the instruments were designed by the researcher. The dependent variable of the study was the supervisor-provided factor of Promotion Potential. Stepwise multiple regression was the main analytical approach. The analysis yielded two predictors of leadership …
