Re-Shaping The Definition Of Eating Disorder Recovery By Amplifying Adolescent Voices: An Arts-Informed Phenomenological Inquiry, Lauren Porter
Re-Shaping The Definition Of Eating Disorder Recovery By Amplifying Adolescent Voices: An Arts-Informed Phenomenological Inquiry, Lauren Porter
Counseling and Psychology Dissertations
Adolescence is known as being a critical period of development, especially for adolescent girls. During this developmental stage, young girls may fall susceptible to concerns about body-image, weight, shape, and appearance, and are deeply influenced by the perceptions of others, particularly their peers. Eating disorders constitute a significant public health concern, with adolescent females being particularly vulnerable. Recovery from eating disorders remains a complex and multifaceted phenomenon, characterized by varied definitions within the literature (Bardone-Cone et al., 2010). Despite the rampant nature of eating disorders among this age group, there is limited literature denoting the recovery experiences of female adolescents …

Factors Associated With Eating Disorders In Men: A Systematic Review, Zoe Alsup
Psychology Capstone Projects
This systematic review sought to identify factors that are associated with men who experience anorexia or bulimia nervosa or symptoms of these disorders. Articles were included in this review if they were peer reviewed, published in or translated to English, published from 2010 to 2021, had full text accessible, included male participants, and included male participants diagnosed with anorexia and/or bulimia nervosa or who displayed symptoms of anorexia and/or bulimia nervosa. Articles were excluded if they did not meet the inclusion criteria, were a case study, interview, or literature review, or focused on a topic outside of the outcomes of …
The Rise And Fall Of Dopamine: A Two-Stage Model Of The Development And Entrenchment Of Anorexia Nervosa, Jeff A. Beeler, Nesha S. Burghardt
The Rise And Fall Of Dopamine: A Two-Stage Model Of The Development And Entrenchment Of Anorexia Nervosa, Jeff A. Beeler, Nesha S. Burghardt
Publications and Research
Dopamine has long been implicated as a critical neural substrate mediating anorexia nervosa (AN). Despite nearly 50 years of research, the putative direction of change in dopamine function remains unclear and no consensus on the mechanistic role of dopamine in AN has been achieved. We hypothesize two stages i n AN– corresponding to initial development and entrenchment– characterized by opposite changes in dopamine. First, caloric restriction, particularly when combined with exercise, triggers an escalating spiral of increasing dopamine that facilitates the behavioral plasticity necessary to establish and reinforce weight-loss behaviors. Second, chronic self-starvation reverses this escalation to reduce or impair …
Predictors Of Treatment Outcome In A Family-Based Hospitalization Program For Adolescents With Anorexia Nervosa, Kellsey Launius
Predictors Of Treatment Outcome In A Family-Based Hospitalization Program For Adolescents With Anorexia Nervosa, Kellsey Launius
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Family-based treatment (FBT) is the first-line treatment for adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN). Although FBT works for many, it does not work for everyone. The current study explored variables that are believed to impact treatment outcome in FBT, (a) initial weight gain, (b) parental criticism, and (c) obsessive-compulsive features, and investigated three additional factors expected to predict positive treatment outcome, (d) fear of food, (e) exposure to feared foods, and (f) parent-child concordance. Participants were 240 children, adolescents, and young adults with AN or other specified feeding or eating disorder (OSFED) enrolled in a family-based partial hospitalization program (PHP). Pearson …
Social Cognition Across Eating Disorders: A Systematic Review, Jina C. Kim
Social Cognition Across Eating Disorders: A Systematic Review, Jina C. Kim
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
Social cognition refers to the cognitive processes involved in social interactions. Deficits in social cognition may play a role in the onset and maintenance of eating disorders (ED). The goal of this review was to examine the current literature on social cognition across EDs, specifically, anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge eating disorder (BED).
The search revealed 79 studies which were organized according to six domains of social cognition: alexithymia, theory of mind, empathy, social processing, emotion recognition, and emotion processing. Most studies examined AN, finding evidence for deficits in some domains of social cognition. Literature on BN …
Exploring Art Therapy With Clients Suffering From Eating Disorders In An Out-Patient Setting, Miranda Hays
Exploring Art Therapy With Clients Suffering From Eating Disorders In An Out-Patient Setting, Miranda Hays
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
To date no peer reviewed literature has been published using art therapy for the treatment of clients with eating disorders (EDs) in an outpatient treatment setting. Despite evidence-based treatment methods being used to help treat clients with EDs high rates of morality and relapse persist for clients with EDs (Belak, 2017, p.1). There is a need for creative approaches to ED treatment that can be used to enhance existing evidence-based treatment models. Art Therapy can provide clients with EDs the opportunity to engage in the creative process which allows them to momentarily lessen their defense mechanisms and explore their ED …
Examining Perceptions Of Anorexia Nervosa, Polly Mcgonigle
Examining Perceptions Of Anorexia Nervosa, Polly Mcgonigle
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Anorexia nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder characterized by a restriction of energy intake, an intense fear of gaining weight, and often distorted body image. AN has the second highest mortality rate of all psychiatric disorders, due to high suicide rates and medical complications associated with malnutrition. An estimated 10% of those who have AN die because of the disorder (Insel, 2012). Interacting factors—genetic, biological, environmental, and psychosocial—contribute to the etiology and maintenance of AN. However, outside of research settings, AN is misunderstood as having primarily environmental roots (Salafia, et. al). Blame is placed on societal expectations and the disorder …
A Review: Examining Narcissism In Eating Disorders: The Relationship Between Two Types Of Eating Disorders—Anorexia Nervosa And Bulimia Nervosa—And Two Forms Of Narcissism, Kayla Lashinger
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
This research investigates the relationship between narcissism and eating disorders (EDs). Two forms of narcissism are studied, as each are present in the individual (O’Brien, 1987). The first form, core narcissism, is major, and refers to the way the individual views themselves while the second form, narcissistic defenses, are minor, serving only to protect the sense of self (Waller et al., 2006; O’Brien, 1987). Core narcissism is exhibited as grandiose or vulnerable narcissism where grandiose includes feelings of entitlement and high self-esteem while vulnerable includes low self-esteem and self-criticality (Maples et al., 2011). The narcissistic defenses can be displayed as …

Does Social Media Promote Disordered Eating?, Carly Feldstein
Dissertations and Theses
Hispanic people are the largest and fastest-growing minority group in the U.S. with a total of 18.5% of the U.S population being of Hispanic descent (United States Census Bureau, 2020). Although eating disorders (ED), particularly those involving binge eating, comprise a significant health concern, EDs are often overlooked in the Hispanic culture (Higgins et al., 2016; Opara & Santos, 2019). Hispanic individuals have comparable rates of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and an even higher rate of binge eating disorders compared to non- Hispanic (NH) White individuals (Higgins et al., 2016). Within Hispanic adults, the lifetime prevalence of EDs is higher …

Background: Several unsuccessful attempts have been made to reach a cross-disciplinary consensus on issues fundamental to the field of eating disorders in the United States (U.S.). In January 2020, 25 prominent clinicians, academicians, researchers, persons with lived experience, and thought leaders in the U.S. eating disorders community gathered at the Legacy of Hope Summit to try again. This paper articulates the points on which they reached a consensus. It also: (1) outlines strategies for implementing those recommendations; (2) identifies likely obstacles to their implementation; and (3) charts a course for successfully navigating and overcoming those challenges.
Methods: Iterative and consensual …
Coercive And Compulsive Treatment Of Eating Disorders: Surveying Treatment Providers’ Attitudes And Behavior., Jessica Cowan
Coercive And Compulsive Treatment Of Eating Disorders: Surveying Treatment Providers’ Attitudes And Behavior., Jessica Cowan
Antioch University Full-Text Dissertations & Theses
Stigma toward individuals with eating disorders is common and well-documented. Individuals with eating disorders regularly report experiencing stigma associated with perceptions that they are to blame for their illness, that their illness is trivial compared to other conditions, or that they are engaging in disordered behavior to gain attention. These stigmatizing attitudes toward eating disorders are also reported by the general public and healthcare professionals, including those who treat eating disorders. Treatment of these illnesses at all levels of care often include paternalistic approaches such as coercion and compulsion that can have both adverse and advantageous consequences. While there are …
An Examination Of The Impact Traumatic Events Has On Psychosocial Impairment In Eating Disorder Patients, Jennifer Parker Hackett
An Examination Of The Impact Traumatic Events Has On Psychosocial Impairment In Eating Disorder Patients, Jennifer Parker Hackett
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Research suggests that trauma has an impact on eating disorders. While prior research has demonstrated that the trauma from abuse has a significant impact on eating disorders, research has failed to explore other types of trauma. In addition, previous studies have stopped short of examining the impact trauma has on functioning among individuals with an eating disorder. This study aimed to address that gap in the literature. The purpose of this study is to examine whether traumatic life events impact psychosocial functioning among individuals living with an eating disorder. Furthermore, this study aimed to identify which traumas are shown to …
Preventing Eating Disorders By Promoting Media Literacy And Rejecting Harmful Dieting Based Mentalities, Mckayla Kagie
Preventing Eating Disorders By Promoting Media Literacy And Rejecting Harmful Dieting Based Mentalities, Mckayla Kagie
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
This review investigates the main contributing factors of an eating disorder and how one can facilitate eating disorder prevention. A brief summary of eating disorders and their history is provided. The diet mentality and the negative consequences associated with that mentality are examined. The term “diet mentality” is used intermittently to describe the behaviors and beliefs that surround fad dieting including the desire to manipulate food and water intake to lose weight. How to reject that diet mentality is discussed as part of preventing eating disorders. Additionally, preventative measures include becoming media literate and promoting body positivity. Media literacy is …
The Influence Of Group Dynamics On Eating Disorders
The Influence Of Group Dynamics On Eating Disorders
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Eating disorders can have a devastating effect on individuals both physically and psychologically. For this reason, it is important to under- stand diverse factors, including group dynamics, that affect the development of eating disorders. I examined the influence of group dynamics on whether eating disorders are viewed as acceptable. Further understanding of social influence may enhance the prevention of eating disorders.
Anorexia Nervosa And Obsessive-Compulsive Tendencies: A Systematic Review Of The Literature, Janice Loscheider
Anorexia Nervosa And Obsessive-Compulsive Tendencies: A Systematic Review Of The Literature, Janice Loscheider
Master of Social Work Clinical Research Papers
Successful treatment methods for adult sufferers of anorexia nervosa (AN) have still not been supported by research. Recently, many authors have suggested that research into shared traits involving obsessive-compulsive tendencies might contribute to improved theory based on etiology of the illness. The purpose of this systematic literature review is to bring the multitude of studies focusing on the shared underlying traits and the apparent overlap of disorders like obsessive-compulsive disorder, obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, and AN together in a way that truly speaks to improved treatment methods. First, findings include a potential predisposition, or common cause relationship between personality factors like …

The Three-Legged Stool Of Evidence-Based Practice In Eating Disorder Treatment: Research, Clinical, And Patient Perspectives, C. B. Peterson, Carolyn Becker, J. Treasure, R. Shafran, R. Bryant-Waugh
Psychology Faculty Research
Background
Evidence-based practice in eating disorders incorporates three essential components: research evidence, clinical expertise, and patient values, preferences, and characteristics. Conceptualized as a ‘three-legged stool’ by Sackett et al. in 1996 (BMJ), all of these components of evidence-based practice are considered essential for providing optimal care in the treatment of eating disorders. However, the extent to which these individual aspects of evidence-based practice are valued among clinicians and researchers is variable, with each of these stool ‘legs’ being neglected at times. As a result, empirical support and patient preferences for treatment are not consistently considered in the selection and implementation …

Attitudes Towards Anorexia Nervosa: Volitional Stigma Differences In A Sample Of Pre-Clinical Medicine And Psychology Students, Amy Bannatyne, Peta Stapleton
Peta B. Stapleton
Background:
Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a highly stigmatised condition, with treatment often involving multidisciplinary care. As such, understanding and comparing the attitudes of emerging mental health and medical professionals towards AN, within the content of sex-based differences, is pertinent to facilitate the development of targeted stigma interventions.
Aims:
Examine the volitional stigmatisation of AN in emerging medical and mental health professionals.
Method:
Participants (N = 126) were medical (n = 41) and psychology students (n = 85) who completed a range of attitudinal outcome measures (e.g. Causal Attributions Scale, Eating Disorder Stigma Scale, Opinions Scale, Characteristics Scale and Affective Reaction …

Educating Medical Students About Anorexia Nervosa: A Potential Method For Reducing The Volitional Stigma Associated With The Disorder, Amy Bannatyne, Peta Stapleton
Peta B. Stapleton
It is frequently reported that clinicians across a range of professional disciplines experience strong negative reactions toward patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). The present study aimed to develop, evaluate, and compare the effectiveness of two different educational programs, based on an etiological framing model. Participants were medical students (N = 41) from an Australian University, who were randomly assigned to one of three conditions (biogenetic intervention vs. multifactorial intervention vs. control). Outcome attitudinal/stigma data were collected preand post-intervention, and at 8 weeks follow-up. Results indicated intervention participations exhibited significantly lower volitional stigma scores compared to the control group, who exhibited …

Weighing In: Therapeutic Benefits Of Online Communities For Individuals With Eating Disorders, Cheri L. Greenfield
Educational Specialist, 2009-2019
The treatment of eating disorders involves a complex approach. In recent years, a number of websites have developed in an attempt to meet the needs of individuals struggling with this set of disorders. Some of these websites are nationally recognized organizations dedicated to improve treatment and provide educational resources, while other websites have been authored by individuals with eating disorders in an attempt to create a safe community of support. This project explores various components found in online communities, examines characteristics of eating disorders, and evaluates the worth of such resources, even when in perceived contrast with traditional treatment. Rather …

Beauty Through Control: Forming Pro-Anorexic Identities In Digital Spaces, Kay A.S. Mccurley
Masters Theses
Pro-anorexia is a complex, multi-layered phenomenon that exists only online. The women who participate in these websites are learning to negotiate how to manage an identity that is normalized within the group but stigmatized within larger society. Using an open-ended survey, distributed online directly to pro-ana website users, I aim to illustrate pro-anorexic experience. After a brief demographic sketch of typical pro-anorexic spaces, I examine pro-anorexia in depth by asking three primary research questions: 1) how do pro-anorexics craft their online identities within the community; 2) how do individuals interact with one another in a highly contested and heavily policed …

Expressed Emotion And Attitudes Toward Body Image And Food, Toni Marie Maraldo
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
In numerous studies over the years, body image and dysfunctional attitudes toward food have shown to be related to the genesis of eating disorders. Recent research has particularly focused on the influence that families have on both the development of eating disorders as well as their impact on their child's body image and eating attitudes. In general, higher levels of expressed emotion are often found in families with children who have either anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa. However, there is a lack of research on sub-clinical populations. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the influence that expressed …
Classifying Symptom Change In Eating Disorders: Clinical Significance Metrics For The Change In Eating Disorder Symptoms Scale, Anthony D. Hwang
Classifying Symptom Change In Eating Disorders: Clinical Significance Metrics For The Change In Eating Disorder Symptoms Scale, Anthony D. Hwang
Theses and Dissertations
Despite well-established diagnostic measures and measures of specific dimensions of eating disorder symptomatology, little work has been done to develop a brief, comprehensive, and valid measure for assessing change in eating disorder symptoms. Further, empirically-supported change indices to assess treatment progression and outcome have not yet been developed. The Change in Eating Disorder Symptoms Scale (CHEDS) is a new comprehensive measure designed to assess progress and change during treatment in persons with diagnoses on the eating disorder spectrum. Previous studies have demonstrated the subscale structure, reliability, and validity of the CHEDS. This study determined clinically significant change criteria for the …
