Resilience To Spare: The Resettlement Process Of Black Cuban Migrants In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Suyent Rodriguez Candeaux

Using oral history interviews, this study collects and analyzes the narratives of fourteen Black Cuban migrants, residents of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Participants migrated to Albuquerque between 1994 and 2013, and either self-identify or were identified by others, as negro(a) or Afro-descendant. This study rejects notions of assimilation and focuses on the resettlement process and life experience of participants. This thesis uses many words used by participants to describe themselves and their experiences. The study investigates their resettlement process, paying close attention to how they navigate the notions of race and ethnicity in Albuquerque. This research identifies community and language as …

This dissertation examines the issue of how migration and identity can be illuminated through the study of material culture. Specifically, this research focuses on the late Developmental to Coalition period transition (~AD 1050-1300) in the Albuquerque area and examines variation in ceramic technological and decorative style. This area was chosen because it is frequently portrayed as a frontier' or boundary between the Socorro District to the south and the Santa Fe District to the north. This perception is largely driven by changes in ceramic technology during this time period, which included a shift from a mineral-paint technology to carbon paint. …

This thesis traces the transformation of two cities in the American West: Albuquerque, a medium-sized metropolitan area in the generally low-population state of New Mexico, and Livermore, California, a relatively small town on the fringe of the massive San Francisco Bay Area metropolis. The federal government built nuclear weapons labs in both places after World War II, and as a result, they encountered phenomenal growth. This is not surprising, as authors such as Peter Hall and Ann Markusen have argued that federal installations in the postwar years affected the economies of many western cities. This thesis is concerned with the problems faced by citizen groups in their attempt to influence the writing and passing of a bus franchise for the City of Albuquerque, New Mexico. It is an historical presentation of the three-sided conflict among the Bus Company, the City Commission of the City of Albuquerque, and the interested citizen committees. It is also the story of why the citizens formed these committees, what the committees did, and the analysis of their influence on the franchise.
