"I’Ll Wait Zero Seconds": Faculty Perspectives On Serials Access, Sharing, And Immediacy, Rachel Elizabeth Scott, Anne Shelley, Chad E. Buckley, Cassie Thayer-Styes, Julie A. Murphy

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

This study explores how faculty across disciplines access and share scholarly serial content and what expectations they have for immediacy. The authors conducted twenty-five in-depth, semi-structured interviews with faculty of various ranks representing all Illinois State University (ISU) colleges. The findings, presented in the words of participants and triangulated with data from local sources, suggest that faculty use a variety of context-specific mechanisms to access and share serial literature. Participants discuss how they use library services such as databases, subscriptions, interlibrary loan, and document delivery, coupled with academic social networks, disciplinary repositories, author websites, and other publicly available sources to …

The Value Of Fiduciary Duties: Evidence From En Bloc Sales In Singapore, Jianfeng Hu, Kelvin F. K. Low, Wei Zhang Dec 2022

The Value Of Fiduciary Duties: Evidence From En Bloc Sales In Singapore, Jianfeng Hu, Kelvin F. K. Low, Wei Zhang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper examines the impact of fiduciary duties on collective asset sales in the case of owners acting as delegates for other owners, thereby potentially inducing conflicts of interests. Our identification strategy exploits a unique legal shock in Singapore, which established fiduciary duties in those transactions in the real estate market known colloquially as en bloc sales. The imposition of fiduciary duties caused the price premium of units sold via en bloc sales to increase over units ineligible for en bloc sale, as well as over units that, although eligible for en bloc sale, are sold individually. In addition, this …

Suddenly, Everything's Online! What Do We Do Now?, Ruth E. Bryan Aug 2022

Suddenly, Everything's Online! What Do We Do Now?, Ruth E. Bryan

Library Presentations

In this presentation, the author, the University of Kentucky university archivist, outlines a problem with acquiring currently-created university documents and offers some initial solutions. The problem is that key university records of historical and strategic importance are being distributed or published online and not routinely transferred to the archives the way they were in the past. Unless these documents are proactively acquired by the university archives, they are likely to be lost because of the ephemeral nature of the Web. Yet, crawling or otherwise capturing dynamic and changing web platforms adds technological complexity and thus requires additional resources. Given that …

Telling The Technical Services Story: Communicating Value (Presentation), Rebecca Mugridge

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

Technical Services isn’t the hidden discipline it once was. Despite some cross-departmental interaction, misconceptions about the work are all too common. It’s incumbent on technical services staff to take a proactive approach by communicating to others their value to the library and institutional mission. Has Anheuser-Busch Let The Steam Out Of Craft Beer? The Economics Of Acquiring Craft Brewers, Kenneth G. Elzinga, Alexander J. Mcglothlin Oct 2020

Has Anheuser-Busch Let The Steam Out Of Craft Beer? The Economics Of Acquiring Craft Brewers, Kenneth G. Elzinga, Alexander J. Mcglothlin

Institute for the Study of Free Enterprise Working Papers

The craft beer segment in the U.S. has grown from a meager 20 brewers in the 1980s to over 7,000 today and is approaching a 15% market share. Macrobrewers initially responded by internal product differentiation but then began acquiring craft brewers, provoking concerns about the continuing viability of independent, local brewers. We analyze the economic consequences of the most prominent of these acquisitions: the Anheuser-Busch InBev (ABI) purchase of Goose Island in 2011. Using variation in pre-acquisition ABI market share to account for the effects of the distribution tier in the beer industry and the influence of macrobrewers on the …

Diversity, Inclusion, And Social Justice In Library Technical Services, Rhonda Kauffman, Martina S. Anderson

Published Works

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Libraries recently embraced a large-scale initiative to incorporate the values of diversity, inclusion, and social justice (DISJ) into library practices. In early 2017, the MIT collections directorate task force on DISJ released a report with recommendations for embedding DISJ values into the daily work of archives, technical services, preservation, scholarly communications, and collections strategy staff. This chapter focuses on the challenges and opportunities in undertaking a sustained effort to achieve DISJ specifically within technical services. The authors highlight how technical services staff can use their unique position within libraries to dismantle existing structures of …

It's Time To Look That Gift Horse In The Mouth: Approaches To Managing Gifts, Kathleen Spring Nov 2019

It's Time To Look That Gift Horse In The Mouth: Approaches To Managing Gifts, Kathleen Spring

Faculty & Staff Presentations

Many librarians have a love-hate relationship with gift donations. Gifts can be a welcome source of material for a library’s collection and can provide great public relations opportunities for libraries, but their associated costs – including the amount of time it takes to review and process donations – are very real. Is accepting gifts worth the effort, or is it time to send the proverbial gift horse packing? This session engaged attendees in discussion about a variety of issues pertaining to gift donations, such as: How do you handle an onslaught of donations at the same time with minimal staffing? …

Transforming Acquisitions And Collection Services, Michelle Flinchbaugh, Chuck Thomas, Rob Tench, Vicki Sipe, Robin Barnard Moskal, Lynda L. Aldana, Erica A. Owusu

Purdue University Press Books

This book explores ways in which libraries can reach new levels of service, quality, and efficiency while minimizing cost by collaborating in acquisitions. In consortial acquisitions, a number of libraries work together, usually in an existing library consortia, to leverage size to support acquisitions in each individual library. In cross-functional acquisitions, acquisitions collaborates to support other library functions. For the library acquisitions manager, technical services manager, or the library director, awareness of different options for effective consortial and cross-functional acquisitions allows for the optimization of staff and resources to reach goals. This work presents those options in the form of …

Determining Success Of Dda And Eba With Assessment, Liz Bober, Stephanie Church

Researchers, Instructors, & Staff Scholarship

Collection development is challenging for academic libraries due to the rising cost of e-resources. Over the past five years, the Case Western Reserve University Library has been experimenting with new ways to actively address these issues through specific strategic initiatives. We have been successful in reallocating one-time funds to user-driven purchasing initiatives, such as demand-driven and evidence based acquisitions models. Our usage data proves these models are cost-effective and aid in the research process by offering a wealth of content at the user's point of need. This initiative has demonstrated that small changes can make a big impact and show …

From Intentional Meandering To Roadmap: Umass Amherst Libraries' Philosophical And Practical Considerations For Investing With "Open" Content Providers, Christine N. Turner, Scott A. Stangroom, Knowledge Unlatched

University Libraries Presentations Series

UMass Amherst (UMA) has chosen to invest in myriad models of open content, systems and advocacy organizations for well over a decade. What at first was an experimental approach has become more values-based, considered and collaborative. Consistent with its strategic plan, the Libraries are intentionally allocating and tracking part of their acquisitions budget to open scholarship. In an ecosystem of ever-increasing options, the social sciences and humanities (SSH) disciplines, monographs, and non-author processing charge (APC) funding are all under-represented in the open access market. UMA Libraries were an early supporter of Knowledge Unlatched (KU) as providers of OA monographs in …

M&A Performance: Market’S Initial Reaction As An Unbiased Indicator Of Post-Acquisition Performance, Nikolaos Papageorgiou Jan 2019

M&A Performance: Market’S Initial Reaction As An Unbiased Indicator Of Post-Acquisition Performance, Nikolaos Papageorgiou

CMC Senior Theses

This paper investigates the reliability of the stock market’s initial reaction to M&A announcements as a predictor of actual post-acquisition performance. The two prevailing methods for evaluating M&A performance are event studies (stock market-based measures) and accounting-based measures. The present study combines these two performance evaluation approaches in a single empirical examination. Both the post-merger buy-and-hold abnormal returns and changes in ROA are used as actual post-acquisition performance variables. The acquirer’s cumulative abnormal return (CAR) around the announcement is used as the market predictor variable. An econometric model is employed to test the predictive power of the announcement-period CAR on …
