Linkedin At The Library: A Continuing Collaboration, Ariana Santiago, Emily Vinson, Esmeralda Fisher, Ashley Lierman, Mea Warren

Collaborative Librarianship

The University of Houston Libraries collaborated with University Career Services to host LinkedIn at the Library, an event where students were offered reviews of their LinkedIn profiles and free professional headshots. Although LinkedIn at the Library was initially funded as a one-time event, the two units worked together to turn it into a recurring event. This article presents our methods for collaboratively planning and hosting the events, attendance and assessment results, and lessons learned for future collaborative efforts. LinkedIn at the Library is a unique example of an academic library’s partnership with a career services unit.

This article details one academic library’s experience organizing a juried art exhibit, open to the campus and local community, and making digital images of the artwork available in the university’s institutional repository. The article also outlines considerations when creating a digital representation of the art exhibit in the institutional repository.

In 2015 the Orbis Cascade Alliance investigated a consortium wide evidence-based acquisition (EBA) model to incorporate into its established eBook program, and began a pilot of Wiley’s Usage Based Collection Management Model. EBA is an acquisition model that grants library patrons access to a title list over an agreed-upon time period for a pre-negotiated amount of money, and titles from that list are then selected for purchase based on the evidence of usage from the initial access period. When a position for Interlibrary Loan Librarian came open at Georgia Southern University in the latter part of 2015, I was intrigued. Although ensconced happily in a public library position and a 10-year veteran of public systems, the lure of an academic position-along with logistical considerations-prompted me to apply for the position. I believe my observations about the hiring, though anecdotal, begin to unravel a conversation comparing and contrasting academic libraries with public libraries, possibly to the benefit of both institutions.

This study focuses on the need for academic libraries to adopt open source software technology for effective library services in Imo State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research method was used to elicit responses. About 82 respondents consisting of librarians from the six academic institutions in the state were used for the study. Consequently, 82 copies of the questionnaire were administered and 63 representing 78% were returned. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data gathered. This paper highlights current developments in digital information resources at the University of Jos Library. It examines some of the new opportunities and challenges in digital information services presented by the changing context with respect to Information Literacy and the need for digital information literacy skills training. A case study method was employed for the study; data was collected through the administration of structured questionnaires to the study population. The GWLA Student Learning Outcomes task force analyzed the data from over 42,000 first-time, first-year freshmen and over 1700 distinct courses from 12 research institutions to determine the impact(s) of information literacy instruction integrated into course curriculum on several student success measures.

Key findings include:

• Student retention rates are higher for those students whose courses include an information literacy instruction component.
• On average, First-Year GPA for students whose courses included information literacy instruction was higher than the GPA of students whose courses did not.
• Students exposed to library instruction interactions successfully completed 1.8 more credit hours per year than their …

Purpose

Librarians are working with telepresence robotics for various uses, particularly as a communication method inhabiting a space between video chat and face-to-face interactions. The library at Western Michigan University partnered with the Western Michigan University Communication and Social Robotics Lab to showcase this emerging technology in a high-traffic setting utilized by students of every level and major. The purpose of this paper is to discuss patron reactions to this technology exhibition in the library, beta testing of a telepresence robot in various public services tasks, and library employee attitudes toward this unfamiliar technology before and after one-on-one training.

Shall We Chat? A Statistical Case Study Of Chat Reference Utilization, Jiebei Luo

PurposeThis paper aims to evaluate the performance of a chat reference service implemented at an academic library in a private liberal arts college by gauging its impact on other forms of reference service in terms of usage volume, with a focus on research-related face-to-face reference questions. Design/methodology/approach Two statistical methods are used, namely, the difference-in-differences method and a simple moving average time series analysis, to analyze both the short-term and long-term impact brought by chat reference. Findings This study finds that the usage volume of the traditional face-to-face reference is significantly affected by chat reference in its first service year. …
