The Effectiveness Of Library Instruction For Graduate/Professional Students: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Adelia B. Grabowsky, Liza J. Weisbrod
The Effectiveness Of Library Instruction For Graduate/Professional Students: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Adelia B. Grabowsky, Liza J. Weisbrod
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
Library instruction to improve information literacy (IL) is often considered essential only for undergraduates. However, students in graduate/professional programs do not always have the requisite skills needed for graduate level study and research, which suggests they may also benefit from library instruction targeted specifically to graduate students. This study used a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the effectiveness of library instruction for increasing IL skills and/or knowledge among graduate and professional students. The authors searched seven databases to identify studies published in English between 2000 and 2019 that reported on library instruction for graduate or professional students, and objectively …

Stories From The Satellite Library: Lessons Learned From Launching A New Academic Branch Library, Heather Koopmans
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
This presentation will discuss the process and results of launching a new library branch facility and implementing related services and programs. Savannah State University was recently awarded a three-year Title III grant to increase research support to first- and second- year students by expanding services beyond the walls of the Asa H. Gordon Library. This Satellite Library initiative has enabled the launch of a new library location (called the Tiger’s Lair), the creation of a new librarian position, and an increase of library outreach and information literacy programs at residence halls, social spaces and other locations across campus. As many …

Building Applications: Real World Experience For Students, Juan Denzer
Building Applications: Real World Experience For Students, Juan Denzer
Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference
Academic libraries are the most diverse departments on campus. Librarians offer knowledge from various disciplines. Students not only benefit from this knowledge. They can gain real world experience from project collaboration with librarians. One way to reach out to students of computer science and engineering is to create a projects that centers on an application for libraries. This could be an internal application or open application for the library community. This presentation will discuss how one librarian has brought forward these real world projects. That has given students experience that allowed them to successfully gain employment in their fields. Attendees …

If you could create any collection management report, including any data, what would it look like? At Minnesota State University, Mankato, we’ve created a tool to provide journal collection analysis and evaluation (JCAE) reports which bring together a wide variety of data in one place. These reports can include Scimago journal evaluative data, any number of COUNTER JR1s, cost and payment data from the integrated library system or from vendor licenses, holdings data from the knowledgebase, subject data from indexes, Scimago, or the knowledgebase, journal data from Ulrich’s, custom data from academic departments, and more, as well as calculations based …

Forget Gate Counts: Assessing Transformative Programming, John Jackson
Forget Gate Counts: Assessing Transformative Programming, John Jackson
LMU Librarian Publications & Presentations
One of the five strategic goals of the William H. Hannon Library is to contribute to “formative and transformative education of the whole person through outreach and programming.” Through events such as the annual Haunting of Hannon, the Hannon Human Library, and the Spring Women’s Voices series, the library outreach team at Loyola Marymount University seeks to create experiences that reach beyond connecting students to information resources and highlight the library as a transformative force in student life. Measuring the success of these experiences requires targeted evaluation methods similar to those used for library instruction. This presentation will outline the …

Readers' advisory isn’t just for public and school libraries. Popular reading collections in academic libraries can support your patrons’ recreational reading needs and their curricular needs, as well. Topics to be discussed include the benefits and challenges of establishing these collections, undergraduate students’ expectations for offerings in popular fiction and nonfiction in academic libraries, getting your staff involved in working with and promoting these materials, developing local exhibits and book lists, formalizing your commitment to popular reading through your collection development policy, and more.

Open Access And Irs: Educating And Empowering The Campus Community, Adam N. Hess
Library Faculty Scholarship
With the trend moving toward universities developing their own institutional repositories (IRs), the need to educate and empower the campus to embrace this new space for publishing research has grown exponentially. This session will provide a background on open access and IRs, including the many benefits and complex issues, as well as an overview of the scholarly communication crisis and the importance of authors’ rights education. The session will go on to provide practical examples and guidance from several pilot projects launched at Arcadia University that emphasized open access education and participation.

Panel abstract: This session aims to address one of the most frequently raised concerns about library-led publishing: how to plan for staffing this new endeavor? The panel will discuss two inflection points in staff planning for library publishing: what it takes to get started (for a library that is just beginning to think about publishing), and what it takes to grow (for a library that has a few years of experience and wants to do more). It will also shed light on one of the least understood, and …

“If You Build It, They Will Use: Creating And Sharing Open Educational Resources To Advance Information Literacy”, Philip Russell
Conference Papers
Since 2010, the library at the Institute of Technology Tallaght (ITT Dublin) in South County Dublin, Republic of Ireland, has been developing a suite of interactive online information literacy tutorials covering research, referencing, plagiarism and core academic skills. These open educational resources (OERs) provide users with a vibrant, challenging learning environment and facilitate flexible, 24/7, independent learning. The learning objects are accessible via multiple delivery platforms and are available for reuse under Creative Commons licence via national and international teaching and learning repositories.
This paper outlines the development of these OERs and how the creation of these learning tools has …

Creating And Sharing Information Literacy Open Educational Resources, Philip Russell
Conference Papers
From June 2010 until the present, a suite of online reusable learning objects (RLOs) has been created at the Institute of Technology Tallaght (ITT Dublin) library covering a range of information literacy (IL) competencies. These RLOs have helped to facilitate student transition from second to third level, advance IL and enrich the student learning experience. The paper outlines the development of these resources, how these learning objects have been integrated into academic modules at ITT Dublin and how they have been shared and reused as open educational resources at national and international level. The author also discusses future plans for …

Training The Trainers: Faculty Development Meets Information Literacy, Susan Archambault, Elisa Acosta
LMU Librarian Publications & Presentations
Librarian and faculty collaborations are the most essential component of any successful information literacy program. How can librarians entice faculty to collaborate? A wide range of outreach strategies have been chronicled in the literature, including brown bag lunch discussions, faculty focus groups, librarian-faculty grants, librarian participation in faculty governance, and workshops. Collaboration can also occur as a result of accreditation or program review requirements. This session will focus on the method of hosting “train the trainer” workshops to present key information literacy concepts to faculty and stimulate ideas for embedding information literacy into the classroom. We will present a broad …

Learning To See: Deciding With Library Data, Cindi Trainor
Cindi (Trainor) Blyberg
Trainor shows how to take your library beyond anecdotes to start putting the data to work and emphasizes the importance of choosing the right indicators for your dashboard. She explains how one academic library is using readily available statistics to aid in making decisions about library hours, website design, strategic planning, and collection management.
