We Love Big Brother: An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Orwell’S Nineteen Eighty-Four And Modern Politics In The United States And Europe, Edward Pankowski

Honors Scholar Theses

In recent months since the election of Donald Trump to the Presidency of the United States in November 2016, George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four has seen a resurgence in sales, and terms invented by Orwell or brought about by his work, such as “Orwellian,” have re-entered the popular discourse. This is not a new phenomenon, however, as Nineteen Eighty-Four has had a unique impact on each of the generations that have read it, and the impact has stretched across racial, ethnic, political, and gender lines. This thesis project will examine the critical, popular, and scholarly reception of Nineteen Eighty-Four since its …

Identity And Conflict: Pkk Vs. Turkey (1984-Present), Ross Dayton

Jack D. Gordon Institute for Public Policy - Student Research

This paper offers a causal analysis of the conflict between the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and Turkey that has been ongoing since 1984. The history of Kurdish politics in Turkey is investigated in order to uncover the conflict’s causes. The conflict’s origins in the Turkish state’s refusal to recognize Kurdish identity and its forced attempts to assimilate Kurds into Turkish society are examined. Other causal factors such as the political turmoil of the decades prior to the conflict’s initiation, the involvement of the student youth in politics, the rise of the PKK, and the interrelationships between the causal factors are …

Inside Or Outside The Whale: George Orwell's Art And Polemic, Richard H. Walker May 1991

Inside Or Outside The Whale: George Orwell's Art And Polemic, Richard H. Walker

Masters Theses

This chronological study of the evolution of the works of George Orwell is helpful for the futurist, the citizen awash in groupthink, scholars of standpoint epistemology, of mind and nature, of radical humanism, and others. A former British officer and Spanish revolutionary, he became a Democratic Socialist who believed in intellectual freedom above all and was a champion of the common man. Described as the leading exemplar of the public intellectual, he focused on activism vs passivism (and pacifism), and transforming art and politics into cultural power with mind and nature as the foundation. Like few others, he understood cultural …

For although he was too strongly independent in his thinking to accept the Marxist or socialist dogmas of his associates, because they did not seem to square with experience, and though he admired the tough resistance of English character and legal institutions to tyranny, Orwell never did tumble to the understanding of man and government which had shaped each over the centuries. Failing to see the constants in human nature as the key to the political problem, he looked around the world both as he perceived it and his literary fellows portrayed it, and concluded that power lust was the …

Prosodic Structure In Morphology, John J. Mccarthy Jan 1984

Prosodic Structure In Morphology, John J. Mccarthy

John J. McCarthy

The thesis of this paper is that morphological templates have access to a richer variety of categories than the CV tier. Although foot and syllable reduplication had been suggested previously, here I have shown the need for templates—conditions on the form of words of particular morphological types—that refer to syllables in modern Hebrew and to feet in Cupeño. In the course of the analyses I have suggested a number of technical proposals: a specific version of the prosodic hierarchy, a procedure for expansion of morphological templates containing higher-level prosodic units, and another procedure for selecting the appropriate structure in case …

The Structure Of The Presidential Selection Process, Myra Conaway Jan 1984

The Structure Of The Presidential Selection Process, Myra Conaway

Honors Theses

The Presidency is a unique institution. No other political office in America is viewed with such awe, respect, criticism and contempt. The President must be all things to all people. He must be a leader, a ruler and a diplomat. His decisions and policies affect many Americans. Due to the significance of the office, time and consideration should be given to the method by which the President is elected. The intent of this study is to examine the structure of the presidential selection process from the nomination campaign through the general election. Also included are brief biographies of the 1984 …
