Ohiolink’S Affordable Learning Initiatives – Making A Collaborative Commitment To Affordability For Students, Anna Bendo, Gwen Evans
Ohiolink’S Affordable Learning Initiatives – Making A Collaborative Commitment To Affordability For Students, Anna Bendo, Gwen Evans
Collaborative Librarianship
Since 2016, OhioLINK, Ohio's higher education library consortium, has defined affordable learning as a strategic initiative. Our affordable learning initiatives have evolved from advocacy and outreach largely around open educational resources to a multi-pronged approach that includes many different strategies for reducing the cost of course materials. At our recent Ohio Affordable Learning Summit, OhioLINK and its member libraries presented on a diverse array of strategic affordable learning initiatives and a menu of options that colleges and universities could choose from in order to pursue making learning more affordable. This second Ohio Affordable Learning Summit was an evolution from previous …
Building The Future Of Oer Through Pre-Service Teachers, Liz Thompson, Melissa Wells, Jessica Lantz
Building The Future Of Oer Through Pre-Service Teachers, Liz Thompson, Melissa Wells, Jessica Lantz
Libraries
According to recent literature and research, in-service teacher awareness of Open Educational Resources (OER) and Creative Commons licenses continues to be uneven and relatively low. Providing OER education while teachers are focused on learning in their degree-granting programs could be a sustainable long-term strategy to build awareness of OER with PK-12 instructors. A small research team, consisting of two Librarians, an Instructional Designer, and an Assistant Professor in the College of Education at two higher education institutions, designed a survey and intervention for pre-service teachers to measure and increase their levels of OER awareness. The purpose of the survey is …

Open Access For All: Uniting A University Community, Erin Mcintosh
Library Scholars Manuscripts
Open Access is not just the distribution of journal articles and scholarly information that’s free of barriers. It’s an issue of income inequality, paywalls, supplemental course material, and research impact beyond the university. Open Access has not been thoroughly discussed throughout all members of the university. This project takes a look at the conversations going on at the university levels through the perspectives of students, teaching faculty, and library faculty. Through this research, it became apparent that the value of Open Access advocacy is multifaceted, interdisciplinary and benefits from advocacy across all levels of the university. This essay is broken …

The Benefits Of Open Educational Resources (Oers) For Faculty And Students, Larry Sheret, Lindsey M. Harper
The Benefits Of Open Educational Resources (Oers) For Faculty And Students, Larry Sheret, Lindsey M. Harper
Larry Sheret
Many Open Educational Resources (OERs) have been developed during the past ten years that have the same quality as those offered by major publishers. We will identify the pros and cons of switching from a traditional textbook to an OER. After the Q&A, we will work with the participants to locate an OER textbook that each participant will evaluate for possible adoption. This session is most suited to faculty who are teaching lower division General Education classes with a large number of students enrolled in a lecture or in multiple sections.

Remixing An Open Educational Resource: A Case Study Of The Uncommon “R”, Lusiella Fazzino, Julie Turley
Remixing An Open Educational Resource: A Case Study Of The Uncommon “R”, Lusiella Fazzino, Julie Turley
Urban Library Journal
Open educational resources address the crisis college students face purchasing textbooks. Although academic librarians play a prominent role implementing the open educational resource solution, by engaging faculty in their use and creation, librarians could go further. At the College of New Rochelle, instruction librarians teamed up with the Scholarly Communications Librarian to revise and remix an already existing information literacy textbook. This case study outlines how an open educational resource textbook was altered and localized to reflect students’ lived reality. The textbook was used in a credit-bearing information literacy course for the College’s Liberal Arts adult education B.A. program.

Reviewing The Current State Of Library Support For Open Educational Resources, Jason B. Reed, Benjamin Jahre
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Academic institutions around the United States are facing pressure to reduce tuition and fees in order to keep higher education accessible. Open Education Resources (OER) is one attempt by academic institutions to provide high quality education resources at a lower cost to students, by replacing traditional textbooks with freely available or low cost materials. Libraries as information experts play an active role in the implementation of OER. This article looks at the current state of OER and what potential impacts OER will have on libraries.

"What are Creative Commons licenses and how do they work? What is the difference between something that is free online and something that is truly 'open'? Did you know that it is often a Creative Commons license that puts the 'open' in Open Access scholarship and Open Educational Resources? Student Textbook Purchasing: The Hidden Cost Of Time, Stacy Katz
Student Textbook Purchasing: The Hidden Cost Of Time, Stacy Katz
Publications and Research
Choice in textbook purchasing has been portrayed as beneficial to students. However, the time spent exploring options for purchasing textbooks takes students away from other obligations in their lives. This research is a study of student textbook purchasing. In this paper, the literature regarding the textbook acquisition process is explored. Students were surveyed regarding their textbook purchasing habits. I found that most students visited multiple stores or websites, but those who purchased textbooks ultimately only purchased from the campus bookstore/bookstore website or Amazon.com. Approximately twenty percent of students reported spending more than two hours purchasing textbooks. The ways in which …
Leveraging Library Expertise In Support Of Institutional Goals: A Case Study Of An Oer Initiative At Lehman College, Stacy Katz
Publications and Research
Incentivizing faculty adoption of Open Educational Resources (OER) as a method for reducing textbook costs to increase access and affordability of higher education has been an area of development in academic libraries. This manuscript describes the experience at Lehman College, CUNY, the only four-year public college in the Bronx, NY. The OER initiative involves the creation of a new program, which includes assisting faculty with adopting and adapting OER, as well as training and discussion around issues pertinent to OER, such as finding and evaluating OER. The case study explains local conditions and provide an overview of the financial implications …
