The Literary Qur'an: Narrative Ethics In The Maghreb [Table Of Contents], Hoda El Shakry
The Literary Qur'an: Narrative Ethics In The Maghreb [Table Of Contents], Hoda El Shakry
Literature
The novel, the literary adage has it, reflects a world abandoned by God. Yet the possibilities of novelistic form and literary exegesis exceed the secularizing tendencies of contemporary literary criticism. Showing how the Qurʾan itself invites and enacts critical reading, Hoda El Shakry’s Qurʾanic model of narratology enriches our understanding of literary sensibilities and practices in the Maghreb across Arabophone and Francophone traditions.
The Literary Qurʾan mobilizes the Qurʾan’s formal, narrative, and rhetorical qualities, alongside embodied and hermeneutical forms of Qurʾanic pedagogy, to theorize modern Maghrebi literature. Challenging the canonization of secular modes of reading that occlude religious epistemes, practices, …

To Kill A Mockingbird And Legal Ethics: On The Role Of Atticus Finch’S Attic Rhetoric In Fulfillment Of Duties To Client, To Court, To Society, And To Self, Michelle M. Kundmueller
Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications
Atticus Finch, protagonist of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird and longtime hero of the American bar, is well known, but he is not well understood. This article unlocks the secret to his status as the most admired of fictional attorneys by demonstrating the role that his rhetoric plays in his exemplary fulfillment of the duties of an attorney to zealously represent clients, to serve as an officer of the court, and to act as a public citizen with a special responsibility for the quality of justice. Always using the simplest accurate wording, focusing on reason over emotion, and speaking …
Preparation For The Delivery Of Telemental Health Services With Individuals Who Are Deaf: Informed Consent And Providers Procedure Guidelines, Michael John Gournaris
Preparation For The Delivery Of Telemental Health Services With Individuals Who Are Deaf: Informed Consent And Providers Procedure Guidelines, Michael John Gournaris
JADARA
Telemental health continues to emerge as the new wave of the modem health care delivery system, and psychotherapy sessions will routinely take place with geographically distant therapists and clients who are deaf or hard of hearing. Consequently, there is a critical need for best practices for such services including the development of informed consent and provider procedure guidelines for the telemental health delivery system serving this population. Sample informed consent forms and telemental health service guidelines are provided.
Ethics And Care: For Animals, Not Just Mammals, Jennifer A. Mather
Ethics And Care: For Animals, Not Just Mammals, Jennifer A. Mather
Speciesism and Breed Discrimination Collection
In the last few decades, we have made great strides in recognizing ethics and providing care for animals, but the focus has been mainly on mammals. This stems from a bias of attention not only in research but predominantly in non-scientists’ attention (to ‘popular’ animals), resulting partly from discussion about and depiction of animals in publications addressed to the public. This is somewhat due to political pressure, and can result in uneven conservation efforts and biases in targets for welfare concerns. As a result, there has been a huge backlash again, with concerns about pain sensitivity and welfare in fish, …
Digital Citizenship Basic Lessons, Cristo Leon
Digital Citizenship Basic Lessons, Cristo Leon
STEM for Success Resources
Digital Citizenship is one of the international standards for students, educators, administrators, coaches, and computer science educators to rethink education, nevertheless, the language used to present the concept to students has not been sufficiently developed in a holistic manner or with a multi-stakeholder approach. Seeking to bridge the cultural and language barriers that dived the student communities from the academic research communities. The Long Branch Virtual Expert Discussion for Student Leadership reach out to Cristo Leon to present his ideas about some basic lessons to share and discuss with their students. Amongst the challenges that the local communities in New …
Managing Dual Relationships For Rehabilitation Professionals Who Work With Clients Who Are Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing, Julia A. Smith
Managing Dual Relationships For Rehabilitation Professionals Who Work With Clients Who Are Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing, Julia A. Smith
JADARA
This article discusses the importance of ethical standards for rehabilitation counselors who work with clients who are Deaf or hard of hearing. Rehabilitation professionals in this field are often faced with the possible ethical dilemma of having overlapping relationships at personal, business, or other professional levels. Although dual relationships can occur with any counselor/client interaction, this ethical question is particularly pronounced due to the small number of members in the Deaf and hard of hearing community and the fewer relationship options. This article outlines eight steps to making sound ethical decisions as well as how to manage dual relationships for …
Regulating Bodies: Children And Sexual Violence, Heather R. Hlavka
Regulating Bodies: Children And Sexual Violence, Heather R. Hlavka
Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
The interdisciplinary silences on sexual violence and the omission of children and youth from social science research speak volumes of the power of the child as a flexible, cultural signifier. In this article, I argue that dominant frameworks of children and childhood make child sexual assault a discursive impossibility for most young people. The epistemic violence of silencing matters, and it is these erasures that are fundamental to understanding violence and power. I argue it is paramount for feminist researchers to call attention to the undermining qualities of Institutional Review Boards that act as gatekeepers of representation and voice.
Relationship Between Religion, Spirituality, And Psychotherapy: An Ethical Perspective, Thomas G. Plante
Relationship Between Religion, Spirituality, And Psychotherapy: An Ethical Perspective, Thomas G. Plante
Psychology
Spirituality and religion are typically a critically important element of most people’s lives. They offer an overarching framework for making sense of the world and a strategy to cope with life’s stressors. They provide a community and a way to wrestle with life’s biggest questions regarding meaning, purpose, and suffering. Mental health professionals are mandated to behave in an ethical manner defined by their codes of ethics. These codes typically understand religion and spirituality a multiculturalism issue. Professionals need to be respectful and responsible and pay close attention to potential implicit bias, boundary crossings, and destructive beliefs and practices. Working …

Ethics Code Of Ngos In Kosovo, Fjollë Nuhiu, Dritëro Arifi, Ngadhnjim Brovina
UBT International Conference
The aim of this research paper is to elaborate the issue of the ethics code of Non- Governmental Organizations (now and on NGO) in Kosovo. It is very important for any institution or
organization to have the ethics code and respect it, but in so many transitional countries such as Kosovo, this and so many other issues still remain unsolved. This paper first will introduce a brief historical information about the establishment of NGOs in Kosovo, and then elaborate the main topic, trying to give an answer to the question: To what extent have Kosovar NGOs adopted and implemented the …
Assessing Counseling Student Readiness To Return After Program Interruption, Tara S. Jungersen, Carly Paro
Assessing Counseling Student Readiness To Return After Program Interruption, Tara S. Jungersen, Carly Paro
Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches and Lectures
Students who voluntarily self-select to take a leave of absence from a counseling program due to personal reasons should be commended for compliance with the self-monitoring requirements of the ACA Code of Ethics. However, post-leave, counselor education programs must ensure that returning students are dispositionally and academically capable of success once resuming the program. Accurate assessment of student readiness to return is a critical duty for counselor education faculty. This roundtable will review practices and procedures currently in place to review student readiness to return from a leave of absence. Student privacy, confidentiality, and ethics will be reviewed, along with …
Aristotle And Habituation: Is Virtue Really Attainable Without God's Help, Roy Michael Mattson
Aristotle And Habituation: Is Virtue Really Attainable Without God's Help, Roy Michael Mattson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
We are by nature moral beings who desire virtue. This fact is borne out by innumerable studies. Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics and Eudemian Ethics remain among the most influential works on ethics and human moral psychology. Aristotle claims that human beings can develop good character traits and achieve virtue with the appropriate upbringing (what Aristotle called habituation). Much of what Aristotle says about character traits, virtue, and habituation is accepted today and inspires character education. Yet recent results in experimental psychology challenge the notion of character traits and virtue as understood by Aristotle. The challenge is the abundance of evidence showing …

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
What do big-name celebrities like James Charles, Taylor Swift, James Gunn, Laura Lee, Kayne West, PewDiePie, Roseanne Barr, Shane Gillis, Logan Paul have in common? They have, at one point in their careers, been “canceled.” Hoards of their social media followers took to Twitter, Facebook and YouTube to hurl insults and declare the celebrities “canceled.” Each of these celebrities has become the target of cancel culture. But what exactly does that mean? Cancel culture is defined by the holy grail of internet slang, the Urban Dictionary, as a “modern internet phenomenon where a person is ejected from influence or fame …
Equine Welfare As A Mainstream Phenomenon, Bernard E. Rollin
Equine Welfare As A Mainstream Phenomenon, Bernard E. Rollin
Bernard Rollin, PhD
The 20th century has witnessed a bewildering array of ethical revolutions, from civil rights to environmentalism to feminism. Often ignored is the rise of massive societal concern across the world regarding animal treatment. Regulation of animal research exists in virtually all Western countries, and reform of “factory farming” is regnant in Europe and rapidly emerging in the United States. In 2012, a series of articles in The New York Times focused welfare attention squarely on the horse industry. Opponents of concern for animals often dismiss the phenomenon as rooted in emotion and extremist lack of appreciation of how unrestricted animal …
Accounting Education In Greece During The Gfc (2009-2016), Dimitrios V. Siskos
Accounting Education In Greece During The Gfc (2009-2016), Dimitrios V. Siskos
Dimitrios V. Siskos
The structure of accounting education in Greece, and in the world, is facing nowadays many significant challenges since the global financial crisis has left behind many critical educational burdens. At the same time, there is an increase in accounting omissions and malpractices of ethics both in the public and in the private sector of Greece. These undoubtedly contributed to massive unemployment, high poverty rate, crime and other social ills experienced in the country. This motivated the study on restructuring accounting education by devising a new educational framework that can be applied to Greek universities and colleges with the purpose of …
Introduction To Suffering, Endurance, Understanding: New Discourses Within Philosophy And Literature, Douglas S. Berman
Introduction To Suffering, Endurance, Understanding: New Discourses Within Philosophy And Literature, Douglas S. Berman
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Literature is generally seen as depicting the lives of human subjects through their unique narratives. And that, while its endpoint may be universal, it is typically grounded in the specificity of a human being (or, occasionally, an animal). Philosophy is tasked with providing the foundational cognitive tools to grasp the meaning of experience for the whole. In Hegelian terms, it unfolds the history of the concept. Yet, as George Steiner, Jacques Derrida, and other recent authors have shown, both philosophy – along with its agonistic cousin, religion -- evoke literary themes, rhetorics, and struggles. Over the past fifty years, Continental …

On August 31st, President Trump revealed that he is currently “suing various people for violating their confidentiality agreements.” This kind of behavior from the President is unremarkable because it has happens so often. In the highest profile case, President Trump had Stormy Daniels, a woman with whom he was having an adulterous affair, sign a non-disclosure agreement, promising that she would not speak about the nature of their relationship.
Welfare Of Non-Traditional Pets, Catherine A. Schuppli, David Fraser, H. J. Bacon
Welfare Of Non-Traditional Pets, Catherine A. Schuppli, David Fraser, H. J. Bacon
David Fraser, PhD
The keeping of non-traditional or ‘exotic’ pets has been growing in popularity worldwide. In addition to the typical welfare challenges of keeping more traditional pet species like dogs and cats, ensuring the welfare of non-traditional pets is complicated by factors such as lack of knowledge, difficulties meeting requirements in the home and where and how animals are obtained. This paper uses examples of different species to highlight three major welfare concerns: ensuring that pets under our care i) function well biologically, ii) are free from negative psychological states and able to experience normal pleasures, and iii) lead reasonably natural lives. …

Teaching Ethical Decision-Making In Counselor Education, Dana H. Levitt, Connie S. Ducaine, Kimberly Greulich, Kelly Gentry, Lisa Treweeke
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
How and when counseling graduate students are taught to apply ethical codes and principles varies. In this article the authors review foundational concepts and proposed practices for ethics education in graduate counseling programs. The authors present strategies for teaching ethical decision-making that focus on the intersection of personal values, principle and virtue ethics, and self-reflection. Recommendations are provided for content delivery and activities and assignments that encourage self-reflection of values in conjunction with the application of decision-making skills and models. Implications for future research are addressed.

Objectives
Archaeological dental calculus is a rich source of host‐associated biomolecules. Importantly, however, dental calculus is more accurately described as a calcified microbial biofilm than a host tissue. As such, concerns regarding destructive analysis of human remains may not apply as strongly to dental calculus, opening the possibility of obtaining human health and ancestry information from dental calculus in cases where destructive analysis of conventional skeletal remains is not permitted. Here we investigate the preservation of human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in archaeological dental calculus and its potential for full mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) reconstruction in maternal lineage ancestry analysis.

Philosophical Background Of Attitudes Toward And Treatment Of Invertebrates, Jennifer A. Mather
Philosophical Background Of Attitudes Toward And Treatment Of Invertebrates, Jennifer A. Mather
Jennifer Mather, PhD
People who interact with or make decisions about invertebrate animals have an attitude toward them, although they may not have consciously worked it out. Three philosophical approaches underlie this attitude. The fi rst is the contractarian, which basically contends that animals are only automata and that we humans need not concern ourselves with their welfare except for our own good, because cruelty and neglect demean us. A second approach is the utilitarian, which focuses on gains versus losses in interactions between animals, including humans. Given the sheer numbers of invertebrates—they constitute 99% of the animals on the planet—this attitude implicitly …

A Moral Panic Over Cats, William S. Lynn, Francisco J. Santiago-Ávila, Joann Lindenmayer, John Hadidian, Arian D. Wallach, Barbara J. King
John Hadidian, PhD
Some conservationists believe that free-ranging cats pose an enormous risk to biodiversity and public health and therefore should be eliminated from the landscape by any means necessary. They further claim that those who question the science or ethics behind their arguments are science deniers (merchants of doubt) seeking to mislead the public. As much as we share a commitment to conservation of biodiversity and wild nature, we believe these ideas are wrong and fuel an unwarranted moral panic over cats. Those who question the ecological or epidemiological status of cats are not science deniers, and it is a false analogy …

Organizational Culture And Ethical Decision-Making During Major Crises, William E. Mumley
Organizational Culture And Ethical Decision-Making During Major Crises, William E. Mumley
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
By integrating various behavioral and ethical theories, such as Organizational Culture and the Social Construction of Knowledge, this research argues that emergency micro-cultures often emerge in times of crisis. Smaller, localized environments, permeated by this crisis culture, often produce an ethical myopia that corrupts wise decision-making. Unless insiders, either leaders or followers within a local setting, are able to meaningfully access ethical frames of reference existing outside the immediate context of the crisis culture, choices remain highly influenced by misaligned values distorted by proximate and introspective survival priorities with minimal regard for external or long-term ethical consequences. In this regard, …

Professional Ethics, Decision-Making, And Interdisciplinary Collaboration: An Exploration Of Teacher Preparation Programs And Practice, Brittany Mccreary
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The first purpose of this research was to explore the prevalence, methods of instruction, and perceived value of professional ethics, ethical decision-making, and interdisciplinary collaboration in teacher preparation programs throughout the U.S. These factors were addressed using the Ethics Training and Curriculum Survey (ETCS). Participants for the ETCS included teacher educators (n = 977) from CAEP accredited preparation programs. Survey results suggest that professional ethics is widely addressed throughout CAEP accredited programs, but that instruction in ethical decision-making varies considerably. To connect these findings with practice, a second purpose of this study was to explore how educators make ethical …
