In 2016, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) documented 64,000 deaths in America due to overdose (NIDA, 2017). The economic burden related to substance abuse is estimated at $740 billion annually in the United States (Priddy et al., 2018). This paper discusses an art therapy mindfulness mandala group method created for use within a partial hospitalization program (PHP) setting with children in Boston, MA. Literature regarding partial hospitalization population, therapeutic needs, and treatment was reviewed in order to develop a method to therapeutically benefit child clients aged nine-thirteen at the PHP. This paper explores the relationship between counseling education, clinicians-in-training, and neurodivergent client populations. Arguing that there is an absence of adequate training to address the specific needs of clients with developmental disabilities, this paper introduces the term neurotypical normativity in order to delimit deeply embedded biases operating within the mental health profession. These biases generate modes of treatment that overlook emotional and relational need in favor of symptoms and behavioral management. This literature review discusses attachment patterns formed in infancy and its implications for early childhood development and later life functioning. The impact of attachment patterns on the quality of a child’s interpersonal relationship, body action tendencies, emotion regulation and fear response patterns are explored. The attachment process as facilitator of these patterns is revealed as well as the disruption of healthy and adaptive attachment bonds as predictors of psychopathologies.
