Power And Sample Size Estimation For Nonparametric Composite Endpoints: Practical Implementation Using Data Simulations, Paul M. Brown, Justin A. Ezekowitz
Power And Sample Size Estimation For Nonparametric Composite Endpoints: Practical Implementation Using Data Simulations, Paul M. Brown, Justin A. Ezekowitz
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Composite endpoints are a popular outcome in controlled studies. However, the required sample size is not easily obtained due to the assortment of outcomes, correlations between them and the way in which the composite is constructed. Data simulations are required. A macro is developed that enables sample size and power estimation.
Parameter Estimation In Weighted Rayleigh Distribution, M. Ajami, S. M. A. Jahanshahi
Parameter Estimation In Weighted Rayleigh Distribution, M. Ajami, S. M. A. Jahanshahi
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
A weighted model based on the Rayleigh distribution is proposed and the statistical and reliability properties of this model are presented. Some non-Bayesian and Bayesian methods are used to estimate the β parameter of proposed model. The Bayes estimators are obtained under the symmetric (squared error) and the asymmetric (linear exponential) loss functions using non-informative and reciprocal gamma priors. The performance of the estimators is assessed on the basis of their biases and relative risks under the two above-mentioned loss functions. A simulation study is constructed to evaluate the ability of considered estimation methods. The suitability of the proposed model …

Macro-Level Diffusion Of A Methodological Knowledge Innovation: Research Synthesis Methods, 1972-2011, Laura Sheble
Macro-Level Diffusion Of A Methodological Knowledge Innovation: Research Synthesis Methods, 1972-2011, Laura Sheble
School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications
Use of research synthesis methods has contributed to changes in research practices. In disciplinary literatures, authors indicate motivations to use the methods include needs to (a) translate research-based knowledge to inform practice and policy decisions, and (b) integrate relatively large and diverse knowledge bases to increase the generality of results and yield novel insights or explanations. This review presents two histories of the diffusion of research synthesis methods: a narrative history based primarily in the health and social sciences; and a bibliometric overview across science broadly. Engagement with research synthesis was strongly correlated with evidence-based practice (EBP), and moderately with …

The field of paleogenomics (the study of ancient genomes) is rapidly advancing with more robust methods of isolating ancient DNA and increasing access to next-generation DNA sequencing technology. As these studies progress, many important ethical issues have emerged that should be considered when ancient Native American remains, whom we refer to as ancestors, are used in research. We highlight a recent article by Kennett et al. (2017), “Archaeogenomic evidence reveals prehistoric matrilineal dynasty,” that brings several ethical issues to light that should be addressed in paleogenomics research (Kennett et al. 2017). The study helps elucidate the matrilineal relationships in ancient …

The major histocompatibility complex is directly involved in the immune response and thus the genes coding for its proteins are useful markers for the study of genetic diversity, susceptibility to disease (autoimmunity and infections), transplant medicine, and pharmacogenetics, among others. The polymorphism of the system also allows researchers to use it as a proxy for population genetics analysis, such as genetic admixture and genetic structure. In order to determine the immunogenetic characteristics of a sample from the northern part of Mexico City and to use them to analyze the genetic differentiation from other admixed populations, including those from previous studies …

Access to a geographically diverse set of modern human samples from the present time and from ancient remains, combined with archaic hominin samples, provides an unprecedented level of resolution to study both human history and adaptation. The amount and quality of ancient human data continues to improve, and enables tracking the trajectory of genetic variation over time. These data have the potential to help us redefine or generate new hypotheses of how human evolution occurred, and revise previous conjectures. In this review, we argue that leveraging all these data will help us better detail adaptive histories in humans. As a …

In 2014 Wayne State University closed its Science & Engineering Library (SEL) converting the building into a mediated storage collection. In 2017 the University received funding from the State of Michigan to convert the SEL into lab and classroom space intended to support our various STEM programs. This project would have a significant impact on our print journal collection, system wide, due to the 600,000 volumes housed in SEL and the limited available space to absorb them in other parts of the library system. This challenge required a radical downsizing of this collection in the most responsible way possible while …

Introgression Makes Waves In Inferred Histories Of Effective Population Size, John Hawks
Introgression Makes Waves In Inferred Histories Of Effective Population Size, John Hawks
Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
Human populations have a complex history of introgression and of changing population size. Human genetic variation has been affected by both these processes, so that inference of past population size depends upon the pattern of gene flow and introgression among past populations. One remarkable aspect of human population history as inferred from genetics is a consistent “wave” of larger effective population size, found in both African and non-African populations, that appears to reflect events prior to the last 100,000 years. Here I carry out a series of simulations to investigate how introgression and gene flow from genetically divergent ancestral populations …

Quality? Safety? Stop Being Naïve., Rana K. Zaban Do, Steven Istephan, Jonathan Serman Md
Clinical Research in Practice: The Journal of Team Hippocrates
The first day of our inpatient medicine rotation, the Emergency Department (ED) admitted a patient to a general medical floor without notifying our rounding team. We used the institution’s system improvement tracking software to draw attention to communication breakdown in the interest of patient safety. This piece illustrates how there is a prominent hierarchy in medicine; it is inherent to the framework of the way in which hospitals function. A discussion ensues with our attending physician supervisor on our patient medicine service. During this discussion, we ponder whether it is possible to impact quality and safety from our position as …

This study analyzes gender dynamics on the ALA's SCHOLCOMM listserv. Utilizing the listserv archive, the presenters analyzed individual message metadata in order to create a list of participants along with their gender; this was then utilized to correlate the frequency of new messages and replies sent to the list with the gender identity of participants. The results of the study clearly show that male participation on the list is disproportionately large.
Racial Microaggressions On An Online Anonymous Platform, Navneesh Pandher
Racial Microaggressions On An Online Anonymous Platform, Navneesh Pandher
Honors College Theses
In sociology there has been an increase amount of scholarly attention devoted to the microaggressions as a theoretical construct. Efforts have been devoted towards understanding the themes, track the progress of the term to its modern day use, the different forms that microaggressions take, and the consequences to individuals that suffer in these encounters. Typically, microaggression research is centered around interviews with minorities but there is minimal investigation into the presentation of these encounters on online platforms where users can maintain an anonymous identity. A content analysis with 5 codes was conducted of a blog that is open to anonymous …
Confidence Intervals For The Scaled Half-Logistic Distribution Under Progressive Type-Ii Censoring, Kiran Ganpati Potdar, D. T. Shirke
Confidence Intervals For The Scaled Half-Logistic Distribution Under Progressive Type-Ii Censoring, Kiran Ganpati Potdar, D. T. Shirke
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Confidence interval construction for the scale parameter of the half-logistic distribution is considered using four different methods. The first two are based on the asymptotic distribution of the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) and log-transformed MLE. The last two are based on pivotal quantity and generalized pivotal quantity, respectively. The MLE for the scale parameter is obtained using the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm. Performances are compared with the confidence intervals proposed by Balakrishnan and Asgharzadeh via coverage probabilities, length, and coverage-to-length ratio. Simulation results support the efficacy of the proposed approach.

An Extended Weighted Exponential Distribution, Abbas Mahdavi, Leila Jabari
An Extended Weighted Exponential Distribution, Abbas Mahdavi, Leila Jabari
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
A new class of weighted distributions is proposed by incorporating an extended exponential distribution in Azzalini’s (1985) method. Several statistics and reliability properties of this new class of distribution are obtained. Maximum likelihood estimators of the unknown parameters cannot be obtained in explicit forms; they have to be obtained by solving some numerical methods. Two data sets are analyzed for illustrative purposes, and show that the proposed model can be used effectively in analyzing real data.

Using Multiple Imputation To Address Missing Values Of Hierarchical Data, Yujia Zhang, Sara Crawford, Sheree Boulet, Michael Monsour, Bruce Cohen, Patricia Mckane, Karen Freeman
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Missing data may be a concern for data analysis. If it has a hierarchical or nested structure, the SUDAAN package can be used for multiple imputation. This is illustrated with birth certificate data that was linked to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Assisted Reproductive Technology Surveillance System database. The Cox-Iannacchione weighted sequential hot deck method was used to conduct multiple imputation for missing/unknown values of covariates in a logistic model.

The need for analysts with expertise in big data software is becoming more apparent in today’s society. Unfortunately, the demand for these analysts far exceeds the number available. A potential way to combat this shortage is to identify the software sought by employers and to align this with the software taught by universities. This paper will examine multiple data analysis software – Excel add-ins, SPSS, SAS, Minitab, and R – and it will outline the cost, training, statistical methods/tests/uses, and specific uses within industry for each of these software. It will further explain implications for universities and students.

Jmasm44: Implementing Multiple Ratio Imputation By The Emb Algorithm (R), Masayoshi Takahashi
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Although single ratio imputation is often used to deal with missing values in practice, there is a paucity of discussion regarding multiple ratio imputation. Code in the R statistical environment is presented to execute multiple ratio imputation by the Expectation-Maximization with Bootstrapping (EMB) algorithm.
Multiple Ratio Imputation By The Emb Algorithm: Theory And Simulation, Masayoshi Takahashi
Multiple Ratio Imputation By The Emb Algorithm: Theory And Simulation, Masayoshi Takahashi
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Although multiple imputation is the gold standard of treating missing data, single ratio imputation is often used in practice. Based on Monte Carlo simulation, the Expectation-Maximization with Bootstrapping (EMB) algorithm to create multiple ratio imputation is used to fill in the gap between theory and practice.
