"Why Are We Still Talking About Diversity?" Combatting Misconceptions In An Academic Library, Michael Mungin, Yasmeen Shorish
"Why Are We Still Talking About Diversity?" Combatting Misconceptions In An Academic Library, Michael Mungin, Yasmeen Shorish
Libraries
This poster will present the assessment and intervention activities of individuals at a mid-sized academic library with respect to diversity personnel initiatives. Each year, library employees complete a survey designed to gauge satisfaction and areas for improvement. Qualitative data suggest that library staff are confused about definitions of diversity and/or lack requisite buy-in and interest in initiatives that address diversity concerns. The activities and outcomes of an intervention to address these issues will be discussed.

Developing Leadership In A Multitype Library Consortium: Ten Years Of Seflin Sun Seekers, Elizabeth A. Curry, Jeannette Smithee
Elizabeth Curry
The Southeast Florida Library and Information Network (SEFLIN) has presented the Sun Seeker Leadership Institute biennially since 1997. SEFLIN, a multitype library consortium headquartered in Boca Raton, Florida, was one of the first groups to sponsor a library leadership institute held as a monthly series of events over the period of a year. One hundred library staff members from all types of libraries, large, small, public, and academic, have completed the leadership institute. After twelve years and six cohorts, SEFLIN is reviewing the project’s impact. This article outlines how and why the leadership institute was created, the program’s goals and …
Narratives Of Engaging Women In Perceptions About Library Leadership, Elizabeth A. Curry
Narratives Of Engaging Women In Perceptions About Library Leadership, Elizabeth A. Curry
Elizabeth Curry
This paper is a collage of women's perceptions about leadership. It focuses on women in library leadership. The impetus for this study is one of personal reflection, as well as an introductory excursion into qualitative research. I was interested in clarifying my own feelings and thoughts about leadership and learning more about the way other library leaders perceive themselves as leaders. I wanted to understand how women defined leadership and their roles as leaders. A related purpose was to see how people characterize themselves and develop an image of leadership according to the opinions of others. Participants had served as …

Library Presentations, Posters, and Audiovisual Materials
For many libraries across the world, marketing, development and fundraising can be dirty words and if you add outreach people do not even get it. In this poster, the presenter will prove why libraries across the globe should embrace marketing, outreach and development for what they are, and let outreach spread and be part of our daily routine in libraries. Just like corporations and start-up, libraries of all kinds need to invest time; energy and resources on their marketing and development strategies. By applying some of these techniques, libraries will not just be able to better understand their users’ needs …

The adoption of resource discovery platforms has been a growing trend in libraries. However, few libraries have reported on the transition from one discovery layer to another, and only a few institutions have discussed two discovery layers available in the same institution at the same time. Bond University Library recently implemented Alma as its library management system, and with this change a new discovery platform, Primo, was implemented to supersede the existing Summon platform. This paper presents the results of a usability study undertaken at Bond University Library in the move from one discovery layer to another.

Roesch Library Staff Presentations
Library staff employed in information technology departments are often seen as support staff, only providing services when something breaks. But what more can library IT staff do to support the mission of their libraries? In this presentation we will explore why library IT staff should maximize their ability to work across various library departments to collaboratively design new library services rather than being relegated to support staff. We will also explore how library IT staff may challenge traditional bureaucratic organization structures to lead change efforts.

Starting Over: Coding To Work With Alma After Voyager, Kathryn Lybarger
Library Presentations
When the University of Kentucky was a Voyager library, I wrote a variety of tools to support our processes, ranging from tiny one-line macros to larger software packages. Now that we've migrated to Alma/Primo, everything has changed! Many of the ways I extended Voyager are part of Alma by default, and Alma's community (and available APIs) encourage even further development. In this presentation, I will describe some differences between the two systems, how they affected the types of support tools I wanted, and the ways I was able to create them.

Alma offers some advantages to Acquisitions particularly for managing electronic workflows and communicating with vendors. However, transitioning from Voyager to Alma and learning Alma’s nuances was challenging as we reworked workflows.

Faculty grapple with resources such as skill (experience with accessible features and devices), time (teaching students how to navigate software and devices in the library), and expense (software, hardware, eBooks, databases). This presentation will provide an overview of accessible features in library research databases, computer technology, mobile devices, and apps. The presenters will report on their collaboration with Lehman College’s Access and Technology Center (ATC) and Student Disability Services to share how to better approach issues and challenges in order to more successfully support students’ access needs. We will also consider the following questions:
- As librarians and faculty, how can …

Goal: To build a relationship between the libraries and athletics by connecting the Health Sciences Librarian and university athletics at James Madison University.
In the summer of 2015, the Associate Director of Strength and Conditioning approached the Health Sciences Librarian to discuss library support for their student interns.
A problem-based, information literacy instruction session was included in the didactic training of Strength and Conditioning interns. A collection of core journals and books was identified and developed. Access to these resources is facilitated through a guide tailored to the interdisciplinary nature of this population.
The methods closely parallel those used for …

Juggling Collections And Connections To Community: Changing Role Of Libraries, Jorge A. Leon Jr., Barbara M. Pope
Nebraska Library Association: Conferences
The traditional role of the academic librarian has long been the support of the university’s needs through instruction, collection development, and research assistance. Over the decades, this role has evolved to match the needs of the 21st century university. At Leonard H. Axe Library, the challenge has been to balance the print and electronic collections at a university whose programs do not draw enough on library resources while also creating meaningful connections with students and faculty. To increase collection relevancy and make meaningful connections, the library has been creating opportunities for patrons to be content-creators and to engage with library …

After re-starting a collaborative partnership between the library and writing center at wright state university, the librarians and writing center staff involved wanted to compare data with other existing collaborations. With a limited amount of data available in current literature, they conducted an e-mail survey of librarians, writing center staff, and writing tutoring services staff from across the country. This survey found that the majority of participants had a writing center on campus and that around two-thirds of respondents had an existing partnership. The scope of these collaborations varied and many commented on a need for more communication, planning, and …

This study used a survey design to investigate the adoption of software packages in Nigerian university libraries. The study was guided by seven research questions. The population included all the 127 University Librarians in Nigerian university libraries; while the sample used for the study included 58 university librarians cutting across the six geopolitical zones in the country and reflecting the ownership status of federal, state and private universities. An instrument called Software Adoption Questionnaire (SAQ) was developed by the researcher for this study. This SAQ was validated by three librarians from the University of Calabar. The data gathered and collated …

A Phenomenological Study Exploring The Leadership Development Experiences Of Academic Research Library Leaders, Beth Mcneil
Beth McNeil
This phenomenological study describes the leadership development experiences of academic librarians currently working in leadership roles in academic research libraries to discover their experiences of being a library leader and to explore how they describe their own leadership development. Study participants identified as having experienced positive leadership development experiences during their careers as academic research library leaders and were, at the time of this study, employed and actively working in leadership positions reporting directly to the head of their academic research library. The goal of this exploration was to understand what the academic library leaders had experienced, with regard to …
