With a mandate to integrate services, the library was particularly interested in learning how the writing center addressed the evaluation, integration and attribution of sources, tasks similar to the work of reference librarians. Since 2002, 97% of librarian jobs posted in American Libraries have required an American Library Association (ALA) accredited master’s degree (2004). The ALA Committee on Accreditation provides a general framework for library master’s program curriculum, “through a variety of educational experiences, for the study of theory, principles, practice, and values necessary for the provision of service in libraries and information agencies and in other contexts.” (Accreditation, 2014). ALA curriculum requirements are broad, however, so courses and requirements within ALA degree granting institutions vary immensely from program to program.

Burnout is about an employee’s relationship with their work (Harwell, 2013, n.p.). It involves a prolonged exposure to workplace stressors that often drain an employee’s vitality and enthusiasm, and lead to less engagement and productivity. Burnout increases turnover rates and absenteeism; causes decreased performance, workplace accidents and poor customer service; and sometimes leads to litigation. It also threatens the integrity and professionalism of an individual. Emotional labor—sometimes referred to as “emotion work” or “emotion management”—contributes heavily to the burnout factor by forcing an employee to control his or her feelings in order to fulfill the goals or expectations of an …

During the fall semester of 2012, the Kimbel Library and Bryan Information Commons conducted a LibQUAL+ survey to gauge how patron needs were being met. Many survey respondents commented that there were not enough computers for use in the library buildings. This issue was remedied by the addition of over 70 percent more computer workstations in the new commons building, a move that was well received by patrons. However, these desktops still filled up quickly, especially during midterms and finals, so the library decided to create a dynamic system to show patrons which computers were available for use at any …

When we think of voices in the library, we have tended to think of them as disruptive, something to control and manage for the sake of the total library environment. The stereotype of the shushing librarian pervades public perception, creating expectations about the kinds of spaces libraries want to create. Voices are not always disruptive, however. Indeed, developing an academic voice is one of the main challenges facing incoming university students, and libraries can play an important role in helping these students find their academic voices. Atla As Community Of Faith: Surveying Members’ Relationship To Religious Faith And Atla, John B. Weaver Dr

This paper reports the result of an online survey, entitled “ATLA as a Community of Faith,” which was distributed to ATLA’s 519 members in May 2015. The results of the survey show the diversity of religious beliefs and practices among members of ATLA. The survey also provides evidence that the vast majority of the members of ATLA are professing practitioners of the Christian faith.

Archivists have led digital preservation efforts for as long as there have been digital records, as a natural extension of archival responsibilities to collect, preserve, and provide ongoing access to unique information of enduring value. Increasingly, librarians and information professionals are also focusing attention and resources on these initiatives. Examples include data curation, establishment of institutional repositories, and providing virtual work spaces for researchers to collaborate and archive their scholarly output.

In 2014, access services librarians and professional staff from various institutions all over New Jersey came together at The College of New Jersey, in Ewing Township, to discuss regional trends and issues in access services. Library staff at these institutions face many of the same issues from managing student assistants, to dealing with stacks management, and handling building security. When Purdue University’s College of Education decided to offer its first fully online master’s program in Learning Design and Technology, the education librarian volunteered to find and organize all the course readings by creating a LibGuide web page with links to the readings for each course. This paper analyzes these course readings, delivered to distance education students through links to the library’s electronic holdings, between January 2012 and June 2014. It categorizes the readings as journal articles, books (or chapters in books), and other openly available scholarly resources on the web. Since this book is primarily about e-books, the analysis …

These seven templates provide an excellent starting point for the development of user personas for library communities of various types. Templates can be printed and written on as part of an ad-hoc brainstorming exercise, or edited within Adobe Acrobat or Illustrator. While user personas can be generated from staff knowledge and experiences (assumption-driven), depending on how you wish to use personas, it is recommended that you conduct user research (data-driven), either observing users interacting with the library, interviewing patrons, or drawing insight from assessment or usage data to help validate their accuracy.

Combining Resources, Combining Forces: Regionalizing Hospital Library Services In A Large Statewide Health System., Heather J Martin, Basia Delawska-Elliott

After a reduction in full-time equivalents, 2 libraries in large teaching hospitals and 2 libraries in small community hospitals in a western US statewide health system saw opportunity for expansion through a regional reorganization. Despite a loss of 2/3 of the professional staff and a budgetary decrease of 27% over the previous 3 years, the libraries were able to grow business, usage, awareness, and collections through organizational innovation and improved efficiency. This paper describes the experience--including process, challenges, and lessons learned--of an organizational shift to regionalized services, collections, and staffing. This study was conducted in seventeen Indian university Libraries to assess the familiarity and usage of cloud computing applications among Library and information Science professionals. The investigator collected responses from 56 number of LIS professionals working at 17 Indian University Libraries, through a structured questionnaire. Results revealed that the usage of cloud computing applications in library operation and services is not very significant. However, LIS professionals are using those applications for different personal purposes like, Store Files Online, Store Personal Videos and photographs online and for Collaborative writing. Purpose: This paper aims to provide an introductory overview and selected annotated bibliography of recent resources on library instruction and information literacy across all library types.

Design/methodology/approach: It introduces and annotates English-language periodical articles, monographs, dissertations and other materials on library instruction and information literacy published in 2014.

Findings: It provides information about each source, discusses the characteristics of current scholarship and highlights sources that contain unique or significant scholarly contributions.

Originality/value: The information may be used by librarians and interested parties as a quick reference to literature on library instruction and information literacy.
