Voter Trust And The Power Of Direct Democracy: An Exploration Into The Importance Of Legitimate Forms Of Governing In A Democracy, Emma Brent
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Legitimacy is the only concept that gives a government control of a population. For a democracy, legitimacy is especially imperative to its function. Current polling in the United States reflects the lowest approval ratings of Congress in history, and a sense of hopelessness in the system. Civil unrest has become a trademark of the 21st century, and much of the unrest has spawned from voters believing their voice is lost in a system that never valued it to begin with. When it comes to direct democracy in the U.S., initiated through ballot measures, many studies point to trust in government, …
Cloud Computing Data Breaches: A Socio-Technical Review Of Literature, David Kolevski, Katina Michael
Cloud Computing Data Breaches: A Socio-Technical Review Of Literature, David Kolevski, Katina Michael
Professor Katina Michael
As more and more personal, enterprise and government data, services and infrastructure moves to the cloud for storage and processing, the potential for data breaches increases. Already major corporations that have outsourced some of their IT requirements to the cloud have become victims of cyber attacks. Who is responsible and how to respond to these data breaches are just two pertinent questions facing cloud computing stakeholders who have entered an agreement on cloud services. This paper reviews literature in the domain of cloud computing data breaches using a socio-technical approach. Socio-technical theory encapsulates three major dimensions- the social, the technical, …
Fighting For A Job: The Reality Of Veteran Unemployment In Virginia, Christopher Flurry
Fighting For A Job: The Reality Of Veteran Unemployment In Virginia, Christopher Flurry
Student Writing
Unemployment is a reality for many veterans, especially those who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, due to a subpar military transition program, lack of effort by the veterans themselves, and the inability of businesses to recognize the value veterans may bring. According to the Pentagon (2015), the current veteran transition program fails on many fronts to equip veterans with the communication and networking skills required to find gainful employment. Additionally, Veterans Affairs statistics (2015) suggest that whether through a sense of entitlement or simply an inability to understand the complexity of the civilian labor market, are poorly positioned to compete …

Arts institutions and artistes thrive in an ecological system of supporters and facilitators. They enable artistes to focus their attention and energy on practice and teaching of the art forms and on creating new productions. They enable institutions to slowly grow and attain self-sustainability in the long run by subsidising expenses on housing, productions, and fees of visiting artistes. They also provide a platform for students to perform and to improve through competition. Students also benefit from scholarships for advanced study. In this chapter, we describe briefly the roles played by various enablers of Indian performing art forms over the …

Using A Social-Ethical Framework To Evaluate Location-Based Services In An Internet Of Things World, Roba Abbas, Katina Michael, Mg Michael
Using A Social-Ethical Framework To Evaluate Location-Based Services In An Internet Of Things World, Roba Abbas, Katina Michael, Mg Michael
Associate Professor Katina Michael
The idea for an Internet of Things has matured since its inception as a concept in 1999. People today speak openly of a Web of Things and People, and even more broadly of an Internet of Everything. As our relationships become more and more complex and enmeshed, through the use of advanced technologies, we have pondered on ways to simplify flows of communications, to collect meaningful data, and use them to make timely decisions with respect to optimisation and efficiency. At their core, these flows of communications are pathways to registers of interaction, and tell the intricate story of outputs …
We The People: A Simulation For Young Voters, Jessee Hankins
We The People: A Simulation For Young Voters, Jessee Hankins
Honors Projects
This project discusses the evolution of my project from its inception through its completion. As a pre-service teacher in student teaching, my experiences directly influenced the development of this project. The project is one that discusses the use of simulations in a social studies classroom, and includes a lesson plan of the lesson that I used within my student teaching experience. The lesson plan also comes with materials that teachers may take advantage of the lesson plan, using it in their classroom to teach their students about the compromises that were created at the Constitutional Convention.
The Public Choice Theory In Public Opinion, Dorji Tshoden
The Public Choice Theory In Public Opinion, Dorji Tshoden
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
The World Bank defines corruption as “the abuse of public office for private gain” and while this social phenomenon exists at many levels of institutions, I will be focusing on corruption in the American political system in this analysis. This paper seeks to focus on the impact of one’s distrust in the government and how they perceive the economy and corruption in the government. Therefore I will be testing the subsequent hypothesis of: people who view the government officials to be corrupt, will be more likely to be of the notion that the state of the economy is bad than …
'Loose Tweets Sink Fleets' And Other Sage Advice: Social Media Governance, Policies And Guidelines, Jane Johnston
'Loose Tweets Sink Fleets' And Other Sage Advice: Social Media Governance, Policies And Guidelines, Jane Johnston
Jane Johnston
While social media represents a broad range of benefits to organisations and institutions, such as enhanced brand engagement, it also presents challenges and risks to reputation and security, such as confidentiality breaches. Employee use of popular social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, both at work and about work has resulted in organisations developing social media policies and guidelines as part of contemporary governance practice. This paper investigates this recent approach to corporate governance by examining 20 social media policies and guidelines from a sample of corporate, government and third sector organisations that are active social media users. It …

The Values Of Nations: The Fate Of Nations Is Not Predetermined, Daniel Reiher
The Values Of Nations: The Fate Of Nations Is Not Predetermined, Daniel Reiher
Senior Honors Theses
The values of a nation are vital for forming the institutions that govern a people and for guiding public policies. This thesis examines the historical institutions and political cultures of several nations and compares them to their geographic (i.e. continental) contemporaries. Particular emphasis is devoted to case-studies of Industrial Revolution Britain, Meiji Restoration Japan, Independent Botswana, and Post-war Asia. This thesis demonstrates a correlation between such institutions as free markets, limited government, and protected personal liberties, with national prosperity. Most importantly, the formation of these institutions was directly affected by the values of the individuals that established them. Values, both …
Counterterrorism In Authoritarian And Democratic Governments, Tai Gray
Counterterrorism In Authoritarian And Democratic Governments, Tai Gray
FHSS Mentored Research Conference
This research project aims to determine if significant differences exist in the types of counterterrorism used by authoritarian and democratic governments. A case study of the counterterrorism methods used by the United States and Chinese governments shows that authoritarian governments' methods seem to be more extreme due to a greater influence over domestic media and public opinion, but similarities in the realm of human rights also exist that could suggest a more similar response between the two regime types.
Second Treatise Of The Social Contract: A Comparative Analysis Of Locke And Rousseau, Benjamin B. Taylor
Second Treatise Of The Social Contract: A Comparative Analysis Of Locke And Rousseau, Benjamin B. Taylor
Black & Gold
Locke and Rousseau both emphasize the importance of consent with respect to government and use state of nature arguments to determine what principles would constitute a just society, but each of them comes to a radically different conclusion as to what such a society would look like. Much of this difference is rooted in their differing conceptions of what the purpose of government (and political society generally) is. This paper analyzes the differences between their justifications of government and between the political societies in which those differences result.
Contentious Information: Accounts Of Knowledge Production, Circulation And Consumption In Transitional Egypt, Ahmad Kamal
Contentious Information: Accounts Of Knowledge Production, Circulation And Consumption In Transitional Egypt, Ahmad Kamal
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
While the 2011 Egyptian Uprising renewed attention to revolutionary news platforms such as Al-Jazeera and Facebook, citizens continued to be understudied as active consumers of information. Yet citizens’ perceptions of their informational milieu and how they responded in consuming, processing, and interpreting facts offer crucial insight into the turbulent transition that followed the initial uprising. This study analyzes Egyptian citizens’ accounts of their information environment and practices amid socio-political change. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 31 politically-engaged citizens from various political and professional backgrounds. Participants were asked to discuss the state of public discourse, the institutions responsible for the circulation …
Cybersecurity And The Future International Competitiveness Of The United States, Tai Gray
Cybersecurity And The Future International Competitiveness Of The United States, Tai Gray
Student Works
Cybersecurity is inseparably connected to the future international competitiveness of the United States and must play a more significant role in both governmental and private spheres of American society. To increase the strength of U.S. cybersecurity and defend against future attacks, the government should devote more resources to providing cybersecurity tools and information to the public, promoting the implementation of secure forms of communication and purchasing, as well as researching and developing both offensive and defensive cyber tools. By focusing efforts on these three key areas, the U.S. government can better prepare for future cyberattacks and minimize risk to both …

The Effect Of Women In Government On Government Effectiveness, Abigail L. Tootell
The Effect Of Women In Government On Government Effectiveness, Abigail L. Tootell
Student Publications
A critical factor of gender and development is the political empowerment of women. Beyond this equality, however, what are the effects of women in government? This paper investigates these effects by examining the relationship between the percentage of women in parliament and overall government effectiveness. The research strongly supports the theory that women are more effective political leaders than their male counterparts.

Iran-Saudi Dynamic Relations And The Role Of Oman As A Negotiator, Natalie I. Ikerd
HIM 1990-2015
This thesis analyzes Iran-Saudi relations in the context of growing regional hostility. This research encompasses the domestic and foreign policies enacted by both states since 1979, accompanying a discussion of the historical background of their ties. Moreover, the future prospects of their relations regarding the utilization of Oman as a neutral negotiator for regional conflicts are examined. The significant contributing factors of each state to such dynamic ties include: the leadership, national security, religion-politics connection, and their reaction to global instability indicators. Recently, Iran-Saudi hostility has been worsening due to their policies in the region in reaction to regional events. …
The Influence Of Power Distance On Csr Programs In Hainan China, Carol Ann Hoshiko
The Influence Of Power Distance On Csr Programs In Hainan China, Carol Ann Hoshiko
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
As China emerges as one of the world's top 5 economies, it attracts more multinational corporations (MNCs) that want to expand there and implement corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs. Despite this emergence, since China entered the World Trade Organization, it has not perceived or welcomed MNCs in the same manner as in the 1970s to 1990s. Further, MNCs have had challenges adapting Western-style CSR programs in China's local communities. There is no widely-accepted multidisciplinary theory that integrates CSR, organizational culture, and culture. Hofstede's theory of cultural relativism classified China as a high power distance country where the population has a …

Study Protocol: Identifying And Delivering Point-Of-Care Information To Improve Care Coordination, Sylvia J. Hysong, Xinxuan Che, Sallie J. Weaver, Laura A. Petersen
Psychology Faculty Publications
The need for deliberately coordinated care is noted by many national-level organizations. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recently transitioned primary care clinics nationwide into Patient Aligned Care Teams (PACTs) to provide more accessible, coordinated, comprehensive, and patient-centered care. To better serve this purpose, PACTs must be able to successfully sequence and route interdependent tasks to appropriate team members while also maintaining collective situational awareness (coordination). Although conceptual frameworks of care coordination exist, few explicitly articulate core behavioral markers of coordination or the related information needs of team members attempting to synchronize complex care processes across time for a shared …
Adam Smith And The History Of Economic Thought: The Case Of Banking, Maria Pia Paganelli
Adam Smith And The History Of Economic Thought: The Case Of Banking, Maria Pia Paganelli
Economics Faculty Research
Adam Smith promotes markets because of their efficiency and because of their ability to develop and support moral social life. His views on banking are an example of his broader view. According to Smith banks should be allowed to issue their own money and compete in a minimally regulated environment. On the one hand, competition, including the possibility of bank failures, generates discipline, and discipline generates prudent behavior. On the other hand, competition in the banking sector is generated and maintained by prudent behavior. The prudent behavior of morally responsible banks is rewarded with economic success and it supports the …
The Iconography Of The Turkish Lira, David Covey
The Iconography Of The Turkish Lira, David Covey
Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies
This is an original manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in Southeast European and Black Sea Studies on 4 April 2022, available online at https://doi.org/10.1080/14683857.2022.2054171.
Turkey seems to forever be at a balancing point—between East and West, secular and Muslim, autocratic and liberal, ancient and modern. As a rising economic power in a region plagued by turmoil, it has enormous strategic importance as both a center of power and a model for others. Pulled in multiple directions by its diverse population, few outcomes seem implausible for Turkey. In the coming decades, it could become a model …

Creativity Training Programs In The Uae Government Sector: Lessons From The Literature, Mardeya Al Balooshi, Payyazhi Jayashree, Scott Fargher
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
Creativity training has been recognized in literature as impacting divergent thinking capabilities as evidenced through varied indicators such as idea generation and innovation. This conceptual paper reviews literature on creativity training and examines its impact on organizational performance. Second, it examines the effectiveness of different tools that measure the impact of creativity training. This paper proposes that there is a need to customize measurement of creativity training instead of using generic models. The UAE public sector, focussing on the Dubai Government, forms the context for this paper as it has recently started investing heavily in creativity training programs as part …
The Political Theology Of Dietrich Bonhoeffer And The Ethical Problem Of Tyrannicide, Brian Kendall Watson
The Political Theology Of Dietrich Bonhoeffer And The Ethical Problem Of Tyrannicide, Brian Kendall Watson
LSU Master's Theses
In this thesis, I explore the relationship between political theology and the ethical problem of tyrannicide in the life and works of German pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Beginning with an examination of his theological views, I argue that Bonhoeffer’s Christo-centric worldview forms the basis of his subsequent ethical and political beliefs, as well as his motivation for participating in an assassination plot against Adolph Hitler. Bonhoeffer’s desire to connect his understanding of Jesus Christ to the entirety of human life leads him to develop an unsystematic theological approach to ethics and the relationship between church and government. Concluding with …
Investigating Insurgency And Counter Insurgency And Attaining A Monopoly On Violence, Bryn Lacey
Investigating Insurgency And Counter Insurgency And Attaining A Monopoly On Violence, Bryn Lacey
Theses : Honours
This thesis is an investigation of insurgency and counterinsurgency, how actors from within and without a country combat instability and how the security apparatus, coupled with peace building measures, can attain a monopoly on violence. The thesis uses Afghanistan as a case study to carry out this investigation, covering the time period from 2002 – 2011. Ultimately the thesis provides an assessment of the nation building project in Afghanistan in light of the research into insurgency investigating why the efforts of the security actors have, ultimately, failed to attain a monopoly on violence.
