ezDI uses large and extensive knowledge graph to enhance linguistics, NLP and ML techniques to improve structured data extraction from millions of EMR records. It then normalizes it, and maps it with various computer-processable nomenclature such as SNOMED-CT, RxNorm, ICD-9, ICD-10, CPT, and LOINC. Furthermore, it applies advanced reasoning that exploited domain-specific and hierarchical relationships among entities in the knowledge graph to make the data actionable. These capabilities are part of its highly scalable AWS deployed heath intelligence platform that support healthcare informatics applications, including Computer Assisted Coding (CAC), Computerized Document Improvement (CDI), compliance and audit, and core measures and …

Modeling Trust Dynamics In Strategic Interaction, Ion Juvina, Christian Lebiere, Cleotilde Gonzalez Sep 2015

Modeling Trust Dynamics In Strategic Interaction, Ion Juvina, Christian Lebiere, Cleotilde Gonzalez

Psychology Faculty Publications

We present a computational cognitive model that explains transfer of learning across two games of strategic interaction – Prisoner's Dilemma and Chicken. We summarize prior research showing that, when these games are played in sequence, the experience acquired in the first game influences the players’ behavior in the second game. The same model accounts for human data in both games. The model explains transfer effects with the aid of a trust mechanism that determines how rewards change depending on the dynamics of the interaction between players. We conclude that factors pertaining to the game or the individual are insufficient to …

Automatic Emotion Identification From Text, Wenbo Wang Sep 2015

Automatic Emotion Identification From Text, Wenbo Wang

Kno.e.sis Publications

Emotions are both prevalent in and essential to most aspects of our lives. They in- fluence our decision-making, affect our social relationships and shape our daily behavior. With the rapid growth of emotion-rich textual content, such as microblog posts, blog posts, and forum discussions, there is a growing need to develop algorithms and techniques for identifying people’s emotions expressed in text. It has valuable implications for the studies of suicide prevention, employee productivity, well-being of people, customer relationship management, etc. However, emotion identification is quite challenging partly due to the following reasons: i) It is a multi-class classification problem that …

Exploratory Study On The Effects Of Participation In A Recovery Mall At State-Operated Behavioral Healthcare Inpatient Hospital, Cheryl L. Meyer, Betty Yung, Cindy Sieck, Elizabeth Ellington

School of Professional Psychology Faculty Publications

We proposed an exploratory study on the effects of participation in a treatment mall. We interviewed currently enrolled patients at the Recovery Mall at a state-operated behavioral healthcare hospital in Ohio. Treatment malls are an increasingly popular approach to rehabilitation of inpatient populations (Webster & Harmon, 2006). The popularity of the approach is based on the theory that empowerment of the consumer to participate in decision-making will aid in restoring functioning and return to community living (Rahe, 2001). Treatment malls offer multiple simultaneous therapeutic activities, allow the involvement of consumers in making choices about their treatment plans and their daily …

Exploring The Racial Divide In Education And The Labor Market Through Evidence From Interracial Families, Peter Arcidiacono, Andrew Beauchamp, Marie Hull, Seth Sanders Jul 2015

Exploring The Racial Divide In Education And The Labor Market Through Evidence From Interracial Families, Peter Arcidiacono, Andrew Beauchamp, Marie Hull, Seth Sanders

Economics Faculty Publications

We examine gaps between minorities and whites in education and labor market outcomes, controlling for many covariates including maternal race. Identification comes from different reported races within the family. Estimates show two distinct patterns. First, there are no significant differences in outcomes between black and white males with white mothers. Second, large differences persist between these groups and black males with black mothers. The patterns are insensitive to alternative measures of own race and school fixed effects. Our results suggest that discrimination is not occurring on the basis of child skin color but through mother-child channels such as dialect or …

Domain Specific Document Retrieval Framework For Real-Time Social Health Data, Swapnil Soni Jul 2015

Domain Specific Document Retrieval Framework For Real-Time Social Health Data, Swapnil Soni

Kno.e.sis Publications

With the advent of the web search and microblogging, the percentage of Online Health Information Seekers (OHIS) using these online services to share and seek health real-time information has in- creased exponentially. OHIS use web search engines or microblogging search services to seek out latest, relevant as well as reliable health in- formation. When OHIS turn to microblogging search services to search real-time content, trends and breaking news, etc. the search results are not promising. Two major challenges exist in the current microblogging search engines are keyword based techniques and results do not contain real-time information. To address these challenges, …

The widespread use of smartphones and sensors has made physiology, environment, and public health notifications amenable to continuous monitoring. Personalized digital health and patient empowerment can become a reality only if the complex multisensory and multimodal data is processed within the patient context, converting relevant medical knowledge into actionable information for better and timely decisions. We apply these principles in the healthcare domain of dementia. Specifically, in this study we validate one of our sensor platforms to ascertain whether it will be suitable for detecting physiological changes that may help us detect changes in people with dementia. This study shows …

Scalable Euclidean Embedding For Big Data, Zohreh S. Alavi, Sagar Sharma, Lu Zhou, Keke Chen Jul 2015

Scalable Euclidean Embedding For Big Data, Zohreh S. Alavi, Sagar Sharma, Lu Zhou, Keke Chen

Kno.e.sis Publications

Euclidean embedding algorithms transform data defined in an arbitrary metric space to the Euclidean space, which is critical to many visualization techniques. At big-data scale, these algorithms need to be scalable to massive dataparallel infrastructures. Designing such scalable algorithms and understanding the factors affecting the algorithms are important research problems for visually analyzing big data. We propose a framework that extends the existing Euclidean embedding algorithms to scalable ones. Specifically, it decomposes an existing algorithm into naturally parallel components and non-parallelizable components. Then, data parallel implementations such as MapReduce and data reduction techniques are applied to the two categories of …

Entity Recommendations Using Hierarchical Knowledge Bases, Siva Kumar Cheekula, Pavan Kapanipathi, Derek Doran, Prateek Jain, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Recent developments in recommendation algorithms have focused on integrating Linked Open Data to augment traditional algorithms with background knowledge. These developments recognize that the integration of Linked Open Data may or better performance, particularly in cold start cases. In this paper, we explore if and how a specific type of Linked Open Data, namely hierarchical knowledge, may be utilized for recommendation systems. We propose a content-based recommendation approaches that adapts a spreading activation algorithm over the DBpedia category structure to identify entities of interest to the user. Evaluation of the algorithm over the Movielens dataset demonstrates that our method yields …

Working Memory Capacity And Redundant Information Processing Efficiency, Michael J. Endres, Joseph W. Houpt, Chris Donkin, Peter R. Finn May 2015

Working Memory Capacity And Redundant Information Processing Efficiency, Michael J. Endres, Joseph W. Houpt, Chris Donkin, Peter R. Finn

Psychology Faculty Publications

Working memory capacity (WMC) is typically measured by the amount of task-relevant information an individual can keep in mind while resisting distraction or interference from task-irrelevant information. The current research investigated the extent to which differences in WMC were associated with performance on a novel redundant memory probes (RMP) task that systematically varied the amount of to-be-remembered (targets) and to-be-ignored (distractor) information. The RMP task was designed to both facilitate and inhibit working memory search processes, as evidenced by differences in accuracy, response time, and Linear Ballistic Accumulator (LBA) model estimates of information processing efficiency. Participants (N = 170) …

Can Two Dots Form A Gestalt? Measuring Emergent Features With The Capacity Coefficient, Robert D. Hawkins, Joseph W. Houpt, Ami Eidels, James T. Townsend May 2015

Can Two Dots Form A Gestalt? Measuring Emergent Features With The Capacity Coefficient, Robert D. Hawkins, Joseph W. Houpt, Ami Eidels, James T. Townsend

Psychology Faculty Publications

While there is widespread agreement among vision researchers on the importance of some local aspects of visual stimuli, such as hue and intensity, there is no general consensus on a full set of basic sources of information used in perceptual tasks or how they are processed. Gestalt theories place particular value on emergent features, which are based on the higher-order relationships among elements of a stimulus rather than local properties. Thus, arbitrating between different accounts of features is an important step in arbitrating between local and Gestalt theories of perception in general. In this paper, we present the capacity coefficient …

Working Memory’S Workload Capacity, Andrew Heathcote, James R. Coleman, Ami Eidels, James M. Watson, Joseph W. Houpt, David L. Strayer May 2015

Working Memory’S Workload Capacity, Andrew Heathcote, James R. Coleman, Ami Eidels, James M. Watson, Joseph W. Houpt, David L. Strayer

Psychology Faculty Publications

We examined the role of dual-task interference in working memory using a novel dual two-back task that requires a redundant-target response (i.e., a response that neither the auditory nor the visual stimulus occurred two back versus a response that one or both occurred two back) on every trial. Comparisons with performance on single two-back trials (i.e., with only auditory or only visual stimuli) showed that dual-task demands reduced both speed and accuracy. Our task design enabled a novel application of Townsend and Nozawa’s (Journal of Mathematical Psychology 39: 321–359, 1995) workload capacity measure, which revealed that the decrement in dual …

Analyzing The Social Media Footprint Of Street Gangs, Sanjaya Wijeratne, Derek Doran, Amit P. Sheth, Jack Dustin

Kno.e.sis Publications

Gangs utilize social media as a way to maintain threatening virtual presences, to communicate about their activities, and to intimidate others. Such usage has gained the attention of many justice service agencies that wish to create better crime prevention and judicial services. However, these agencies use analysis methods that are labor intensive and only lead to basic, qualitative data interpretations. This paper presents the architecture of a modern platform to discover the structure, function, and operation of gangs through the lens of social media. Preliminary analysis of social media posts shared in the greater Chicago, IL region demonstrate the platform’s …
