Scholars are being asked — by funding agencies and publishers alike — to release their data along with each publication, as though journal articles were merely containers of data. Data are amorphous and dynamic entities, best understood as evidence in support of an argument. The enthusiasm for “big data” obscures the complexity and diversity of data and of data practices across the disciplines. Knowledge sharing in science includes sharing research data. Research funding agencies have focused on increasing the supply of data by requiring data management plans and data sharing. Policy makers have paid surprisingly little attention to the demand for data. It stands to reason that if scholars actively sought data for reuse, then more data would be shared. The few studies that exist on the demand for extant data suggest that researchers rarely are asked for their data and rarely seek data from other investigators. Scholarly knowledge-sharing includes sharing research data, but while the supply of data is growing rapidly, demand exists in only a few research communities. This appears to be caused by factors related to trust, application, and practices. When collecting one’s own data, a researcher knows its origins, transformations, analyses, assumptions, strengths, limitations, access conditions, and likely longevity, but researchers may not have that information about data acquired from other parties. Librarians, archivists, and data scientists assist scholars with managing, curating, and disseminating their data, recommending practices with reuse in mind whenever possible. Open Access (OA) refers to free, online access to peer reviewed scholarship. Many OA proponents view OA as a potential mechanism for reversing inequities in information flows between industrialized and non-industrialized nations. The "green road" of OA (self-archiving in an OA institutional repository) has seen substantial growth in African nations where there have historically been chronic problems both with access to scholarly and scientific materials and participation in the larger scholarly and scientific community. Recent decades have seen extensive changes in how researchers in the sciences work. Online platforms enabled by Web 2.0 technologies (collectively known as “open” or “networked” science) have created multiple new channels for informal communications, revolutionizing the ways in which scientists collaborate and share results. Meanwhile, digitization and open access publishing have brought fundamental change to modes of publication and distribution for scientific journals. Yet the primary vehicle for the formal publication of results, the scientific article, has been much slower to alter in format. Changes in scholarly publishing have resulted in a move toward openness. To this end, new, open models of peer review are emerging. While the scholarly literature has examined and discussed open peer review, no established definition of it exists, nor are there uniform implementations of open peer review processes. This article examines the literature discussing open peer review, identifies common open peer review definitions, and describes eight common characteristics of open peer review: signed review, disclosed review, editor-mediated review, transparent review, crowdsourced review, prepublication review, synchronous review, and post-publication review. The integration of the Utah State University Press and USU Libraries enhanced access to scholarly materials in a variety of ways. The press utilizes USU’s institutional repository, the Digital Commons, to facilitate the open access distribution of its works subsequent to a 12-month embargo. Additionally, the collaborative environment created by shared space within the library fosters innovation. The library benefits from the extensive knowledge of the press and applies it to its nascent library-based publishing efforts. The press has also adopted some of the open access ethos prevalent in library philosophy and practices and applied it to high-quality peer-reviewed and …

Profile of a Merger: In 2009, the dean of libraries and the director of the university press at Utah State University proposed a departmental merger to their central administration. They argued that through restructuring reporting lines so that the press became a department of the library at least three important benefits could be achieved. First, the central administration was at the time hoping to cut costs by consolidating operations in various parts of the university; merging the staff reporting lines of the university press into the library offered an opportunity for consolidation. Secondly, integrating the press into the library promised …

While it seems that digitized scholarship should lead the way to better discoverability and attribution, the age-old problems still plague us: confusion about names, siloed data, lack of or difficult communication between organizations. This meeting, hosted jointly by Dryad and ORCID, provides a venue to discuss these issues and learn about the initiatives underway to to address them, including social aspects of attribution, the persistent identifiers for researchers and their work, and development of interoperable methods for storing and calling data.

Programmatic efforts to change undergraduate education, instructional activities for the classroom, and new models and roles for subject liaisons will be presented.

Digital humanities work raises questions around digitization, search, and non-consumptive uses of texts, as well as distribution and access. But traditional humanities work is also confronting copyright questions, simply in terms of publishing, using, and accessing humanities research. This discussion, facilitated by Laura Quilter, UMass Copyright and Information Policy Librarian, will address the issues raised in copyright litigation, particularly the Authors Guild v. HathiTrust case and the "digital humanities" amicus brief, and consider the possible Open Access future presented by the Open Library of Humanities and other initiatives.
