A Comprehensive Study Of Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, And Comparison, Per Maximilian Gasseholm

Social Sciences

Today complimentary medicine is being increasingly sought out. Ayurveda and TCM, are among the oldest systems of medicine and have been developed for over thousands of years in India and China respectively. This paper details the philosophies, medical theories, anatomy, diagnosis, and treatments of both of these systems, including a comparison. Both of these modalities of healing operate with a microcosm – macrocosm paradigm. This makes them fundamentally similar, and compatible with each other. Ayurveda uses Tridoshic theory to apply treatments ranging from diet, massage, meditation, yoga among other therapies to bring Vata, Pitta, and Kapha into balance. TCM is …

Slow Tourism At The Caribbean's Geographical Margins, Benjamin F. Timms, Dennis Conway Jul 2012

Slow Tourism At The Caribbean's Geographical Margins, Benjamin F. Timms, Dennis Conway

Social Sciences

The Caribbean tourism industry owes much of its success to beneficial geographical site and situation factors. Yet these geographical advantages have also contributed to the mass tourism-related pressures of economic dependency, social division and environmental degradation. We argue geographically marginal locales in the Caribbean have the potential to develop alternative tourism models that ameliorate these negative repercussions. With its conceptual roots originating from the slow food movement and theoretically rooted in Herman Daly’s ‘soft growth’ development, we propose slow tourism as a viable soft growth model that is a more culturally sensitive and sustainable genre of alternative tourism. This new …

Socioeconomic Background: Enlistees Versus Rotc Cadets, Kyle Neuman Jun 2012

Socioeconomic Background: Enlistees Versus Rotc Cadets, Kyle Neuman

Social Sciences

The intent of this research project is to determine what socioeconomic factors lead to enlisting versus enrolling as an ROTC cadet. It provides details that lead them to take the military route but specifically, which one. The research for this particular topic will be done using mostly data analysis and interviews with four ROTC cadets. Before starting this project, I hypothesized that ROTC cadets would have the advantage of a higher socioeconomic background than enlistees. This hypothesis was formulated not just at random but from personal observations. I have witnessed both enlistee lifestyles and that of a cadet. By the …

Racism In The Criminal Justice System, Nichole Griffith Jun 2012

Racism In The Criminal Justice System, Nichole Griffith

Social Sciences

This paper examines racism in the criminal justice system. The criminal justice system creates and perpetuates racial hierarchy in the United States. African Americans are criminalized and targeted because of their skin color. I analyze the Reagan administration, the War on Drugs, corrupt police practices, media, inner city enforcement, police discretion, racial profiling, and sentencing to reveal this racism and unfair treatment of African Americans. These victims of racism face lifelong marginalization and exclusion because they were criminalized. I also draw a link between the criminal justice system and slavery and Jim Crow. This racism explains why there are so …

Impacts Of Extended Family Households Among Latinos On The Central Coast, Ca, Fredy Figueroa, Chelsea Williams Jun 2012

Impacts Of Extended Family Households Among Latinos On The Central Coast, Ca, Fredy Figueroa, Chelsea Williams

Social Sciences

The goal of our research study is to examine the influences of the extended family within the Latino community and how it affects young Latino values development. Currently, there is limited information about this topic. We hope to examine this trend among the Latino community and shed light on the reciprocal benefits grandparents, parents and children obtain from extended family living arrangements. Based on our research, we concluded that the long-term emotional and economic benefits associated with extended family households greatly outweigh the inconsequential, short-term disadvantages that result from this situation.

Articulating Sexuality: A Critical History Of Gay And Lesbian Anthropology, Carly Fox Jun 2012

Articulating Sexuality: A Critical History Of Gay And Lesbian Anthropology, Carly Fox

Social Sciences

The purpose of this paper is to explore anthropological discourses regarding sexuality and relate them to the lived experiences of individuals. The paper is divided into two interrelated sections: historical and theoretical. Section one identifies a subfield within anthropology, gay and lesbian anthropology, most prominently represented by The Society of Lesbian and Gay Anthropologists (SOLGA), and traces its emergence within the wider discipline of anthropology. It highlights the foundational scholars and theoretical shifts that have been crucial in defining the subfield as it is today and looks at how early anthropologists approached sexuality in general, and same- sex sexuality in …

Genetic Diversity And Population Parameters Of Sea Otters, Enhydra Lutris, Before Fur Trade Extirpation From 1741–1911, Shawn Larson, Ron Jameson, Michael Etnier, Terry L. Jones, Roberta Hall Mar 2012

Genetic Diversity And Population Parameters Of Sea Otters, Enhydra Lutris, Before Fur Trade Extirpation From 1741–1911, Shawn Larson, Ron Jameson, Michael Etnier, Terry L. Jones, Roberta Hall

Social Sciences

All existing sea otter, Enhydra lutris, populations have suffered at least one historic population bottleneck stemming from the fur trade extirpations of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. We examined genetic variation, gene flow, and population structure at five microsatellite loci in samples from five pre-fur trade populations throughout the sea otter’s historical range: California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Russia. We then compared those values to genetic diversity and population structure found within five modern sea otter populations throughout their current range: California, Prince William Sound, Amchitka Island, Southeast Alaska and Washington. We found twice the genetic diversity in the pre-fur …

Menarche Ceremonies & Social Change In Fiji, Anna Clauson Mar 2012

Menarche Ceremonies & Social Change In Fiji, Anna Clauson

Social Sciences

Fiji is undergoing rapid urbanization. Over fifty percent of Fiji’s population has moved from traditional villages to the city. Changes in lifestyle associated with urbanization bring challenges to traditional Fijian values and ways of life. The occurrence of menarche ceremonies in Fiji is a lens by which to explore the implications of these social changes on Fijian women. Inductive interviews with sixteen Fijian women reveal that birth order, proximity to home villages, and maternal agency are three general factors that determine the occurrence of menarche ceremonies. Education is also identified as an impacting force on first menstruation events in Fiji, …

The Behavioral Ecology Of Estrus Signaling In Humans, Kylie Breuer Mar 2012

The Behavioral Ecology Of Estrus Signaling In Humans, Kylie Breuer

Social Sciences

When female primates are the most fertile, they show it by a swelling of the estrus, which is easily visible to other primates. The purpose of this is to demonstrate to male primates when the females are most likely to conceive, and therefore to reveal the best time for copulation. Human females, on the other hand, do not express as obvious of clues as to when they are the most fertile. As of recent, general knowledge has been that female humans have concealed ovulation, but there have been several studies that seem to prove otherwise. My senior project question is: …
