The Present And Future Of Diplomacy And Diplomatic Studies, Stuart Murray, Paul Sharp, Geoffrey Wiseman, David Criekemans, Jan Melissen
Stuart Murray
Of late, practical and theoretical interest in diplomacy and diplomatic studies has grown, prompting a number of diplomatic scholars to undertake a long overdue stock take of the past, present, and future of the subfield. What follows, therefore are five essays by both senior and junior scholars of diplomacy reflecting on the origins of diplomatic studies, showcasing contemporary scholarship, and suggesting some of the opportunities and challenges the study of diplomacy poses for those working in the broader ISA and International Relations (IR) communities in the future. Its aims are simple: to demonstrate that diplomacy and diplomatic theory are central …
Reforming The Organisation Of The Islamic Conference? Implications For Religious Dialogue And Political Pluralism In Southeast Asia, R. Ferguson
R. James Ferguson
Extract:
Islamic politics remains at the centre of international relations in the early 21st century, with important implications for regional processes in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Eurasian-Central Asian affairs. One mechanism for the aspirations of states with Muslim majorities and communities is the OIC, the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, now with 57 members and several observers. The OIC also has organisational linkages with NAM (the Non-Aligned Movement), the UN, the League of Arab States, the Economic Cooperation Organisation, the AU (African Union) and indirectly with ASEAN. Likewise, the MNLF (Moro National Liberation Front) and Turkish Cyprus secured …
International Regimes And Globalization: Tools For Managing Complex Change, Ronald Ferguson
International Regimes And Globalization: Tools For Managing Complex Change, Ronald Ferguson
R. James Ferguson
International Regimes have long been understood as cooperative mechanisms that allow states to work with each other, shaping expectations and generating areas of convergence on specific issues. (Chen & Chen 2009; Gorg & Ulrich 2006; Brahm 2005; Keohane 1982). Ranging across numerous areas, including fisheries conservation, food production, international trade, proliferation control regimes, control of illicit goods, monetary regimes, development agenda, and environmental cooperation, they can often operate where international institutional control is weak. In the 21st century, such regimes often draw on international non-government organizations and mobilize public and community support as part of their strategy. As such, …
Toward A Knowledge Economy In Saudi Arabia, Giulio M. Gallarotti, Essam Elfalily, Osama Tayyeb
Toward A Knowledge Economy In Saudi Arabia, Giulio M. Gallarotti, Essam Elfalily, Osama Tayyeb
Giulio M Gallarotti
Nations that have sought to overcome the resource curse and other barriers to economic growth have for some time sought greater development through a number of strategies: from import substitution in the 1950s to current strategies based on microfinance and human-capabilities approaches. Needless to say, the international community is still searching for the elusive Holy Grail of the optimal development strategy. One strategy that is gaining greater attention and adherents is that of promoting a transition to a knowledge economy. This paper is about one such nation: Saudi Arabia. In analyzing the Kingdom’s quest for a knowledge economy, this article …

Saudi Arabia And The Use Of Soft Power, Giulio M. Gallarotti, Essam Elfalily, Osama Tayyeb
Saudi Arabia And The Use Of Soft Power, Giulio M. Gallarotti, Essam Elfalily, Osama Tayyeb
Giulio M Gallarotti
Present day events in the Middle East and North Africa have confronted Saudi Arabia with some of its greatest challenges as a nation. The political landscape has been transformed by popular movements for democratization (Arab Spring). The serious economic and political turbulence that confronts the region does not promise to ameliorate anytime soon. And in the greater sphere of global relations, Saudi Arabia faces a critical and uncertain future with the US disengaging from Iraq and the controversy over a nuclear Iran. Saudi Arabia’s domestic challenges have proved no less imposing. While common wisdom has harped on the abundance of …

Seeking Security In An Insecure World, Dan Caldwell, Robert Williams
Seeking Security In An Insecure World, Dan Caldwell, Robert Williams
Robert E. Williams Jr.
Seeking Security in an Insecure World is a comprehensive yet concise introduction to international security. It explores the changing conditions that lead to insecurity in the world. During the Cold War, the Soviet-American nuclear rivalry generated insecurity. Since then, state-based nuclear threats have diminished while the threat of non-state actors wielding weapons of mass destruction has increased. A global surge in mass-casualty terrorism, persistent and costly intrastate wars, and environmental threats have reshaped our thinking about security threats and how best to respond to them. The thoroughly updated second edition considers today's security agenda, including the threat posed by the …

Games Without Frontiers?: Democratic Engagement, Agonistic Pluralism, And The Question Of Exclusion, Robert W. Glover
Games Without Frontiers?: Democratic Engagement, Agonistic Pluralism, And The Question Of Exclusion, Robert W. Glover
Robert W. Glover
In recent years a growing number of democratic theorists have proposed ways to increase citizen engagement, while channeling those democratic energies in positive directions and away from systematic marginalization, exclusion and intolerance. One novel answer is provided by a strain of democratic theory known as agonistic pluralism, which valorizes adversarial engagement and recognizes the marginalizing tendencies implicit in drives to consensus and stability. However, the divergences between competing variants of agonistic pluralism remain largely underdeveloped or unrecognized. In this article, I address this shortcoming, examining these strains of agonism around the constraints placed upon democratic discourse. I argue that the …
