Gender Power And Language: Touring With The Gatekeepers Of Union, Kaileigh Moore
Gender Power And Language: Touring With The Gatekeepers Of Union, Kaileigh Moore
Honors Theses
Tannen, Lakoff, O’Barr, and Atkins suggest connections between gender, power, and language. However, it is unknown if these patterns persist in our society today. Lakoff argues that women are uncomfortable with power and speak in such a way as to avoid sounding authoritative. Tannen argues that women try to be friendly and egalitarian and to use conversations to create relationships. Thus, inadvertently, women lack authority in speech. O-Barr and Atkins say speech styles are not linked to gender but to relative power. Campus tour guides hold a unique position in society in that they must be authoritative leaders, but friendly …
In Pursuit Of Cultural Immersion: An Anthropological Look Into American Students' Study Abroad Experience, Jessica Sarrantonio
In Pursuit Of Cultural Immersion: An Anthropological Look Into American Students' Study Abroad Experience, Jessica Sarrantonio
Honors Theses
American students are now more than ever being encouraged to study abroad. Study abroad has been praised for increasing students’ cultural sensitivity, and promoting personal, professional, and intellectual development. In the spring of 2011, I personally had the chance to participant in, analyze, and reflect upon what the American students’ study abroad experience is all about. After three months during the summer in India, as a participant observer in a language intensive program, and three months during the fall in Australia, as a participant observer in Union College’s Partners in Global Education, I have a unique personal and cultural understanding …

Cultural Influences Impact Social Networking On Chinese Students Studying In The United States, Alethea Schepperly
Honors Theses
China continues to impose limitations upon their citizen’s access to the World Wide Web, and censors their ability to readily communicate on an international basis. Further, these countries impose restrictions on the information that can be posted and shared online, including social network sites and companies such as RenRen in China, which operate under restrictions and monitoring imposed by the Government. Social networking has become an important method for communication and information sharing, because it enables information to easily be shared and made available to millions of online users.
From Roosters To Talking Fish: A Comparative Study Of Hispaniolas Societal Evolution Through Folktales And Myths, Sara Block
Honors Theses
The island of Hispaniola is home to two sovereign nations with a bloody and complex history: Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Their disparate experiences with European powers and colonization and their different roads to independence fundamentally shaped their cultures and current political status. The evolution of culture and the intrusions of external influences and powers are visible in the popular myths and folktales of the two countries. After a close analysis of the respective folktales through a historical lens, the thematic and structural composition of the stories suggest that Haitian and Dominican cultures are similar, but still characterized by small …
Grey Matter: Investigating The Gendered Fan Consumption Of Grey’S Anatomy, John Barr
Grey Matter: Investigating The Gendered Fan Consumption Of Grey’S Anatomy, John Barr
Honors Theses
This study investigates the fan consumption of the television medical drama Grey's Anatomy, which is commonly associated with a predominately female fanbase. Utilizing both a male and female focus group with fans of the show, participants took a survey (gathering demographics and their Bem Sex-Role Inventory score) and viewed two episodes of the show, both followed by a discussion of the episode and the show in general. Focus groups were audio-recorded and transcribed in full for analysis, along with the survey data and observational notes taken during the viewing. Coding of the data revealed that males and females held …
Human-Animal Relationships In Traditional Healing Methods: A Cross-Cultural Analysis, Ashley Long
Human-Animal Relationships In Traditional Healing Methods: A Cross-Cultural Analysis, Ashley Long
Honors Theses
Limpiezas are a form of ritual used around the world for healing and diagnosis illness. In a lot of cases, rituals such as these are used with other objects such as bones, flowers, eggs, or animals. Within the Santeria and Andean cultures, limpiezas are performed using animals; it is the goal of this research paper to determine why certain animals are used and how they complement the healing process. Research included an exploration of contextual data and cross-cultural analysis of the different populations. It was found that the differences found in the cosmologies of the separate cultures can be referred …

An Analysis Of Lithic Debitage From Mound C At The Winterville Mounds Archaeological Site (22ws500), Barbara Mcclendon
Honors Theses
The Winterville Mounds, located in Northwest Mississippi, was once home to one of the largest chiefdoms in the Southeast. It served as a both a religious and political center and housed the ruling class atop its twenty-three manmade mounds. Recent excavation on Mound C at Winterville has uncovered an unusually large quantity of lithic artifacts. In an effort to shed light on the presence of such utilitarian tools where elites resided, this study utilized individual flake analysis on 830 pieces of lithic debitage, including cores, flakes, shatter, and tools. After documenting significant evidence of early through late stage lithic reduction …
Pilgrimage To The Birthplace Of Elvis Presley, Joseph Samuel Miller
Pilgrimage To The Birthplace Of Elvis Presley, Joseph Samuel Miller
Honors Theses
At the Elvis Presley birthplace in Tupelo, Mississippi, a sacred, secular pilgrimage is taking place. This study used the categories of myths, symbols, and experiences to understand the perceptions of the pilgrims at the birthplace. Using a combination of interviews and mapping, the themes and data presented show that the area has a clear distinction of sacred space, which was defined by the relics in the spaces that Elvis physically interacted with. The pilgrim related to these symbols through strong, varied mythological content. A mapping component illustrated the international spatial distribution of pilgrims to the birthplace and confirms that it …

Transnationalism And Identity: The Concept Of Community In Ghanaian Literature And Contemporary Ghanaian Culture, Devin M. Geary
Transnationalism And Identity: The Concept Of Community In Ghanaian Literature And Contemporary Ghanaian Culture, Devin M. Geary
Honors Theses
In my thesis, I use anthropology, literature, and adinkra, an indigenous art, to study Ghanaian concepts of community from an interactive standpoint. While each of these disciplines has individually been used to study the concept of community, the three have not previously been discussed in relation to one another. I explore the major findings of each field—mainly that in anthropology, transnational informants find communities upheld; in literature, transnational characters find the opposite; and in adinkra, there are elements of both continuity and dissolution—to discuss Ghanaian constructs of community in the transnational world. Throughout time, there have always been transnational individuals …
