Demócratas Iliberales: Configuraciones Contradictorias Del Apoyo A La Democracia En México, Rodolfo Sarsfield Dec 2008

Demócratas Iliberales: Configuraciones Contradictorias Del Apoyo A La Democracia En México, Rodolfo Sarsfield

Rodolfo Sarsfield

Rethinking The Role Of Resubsumption In Conceptual Change., Andrew Shtulman Dec 2008

Rethinking The Role Of Resubsumption In Conceptual Change., Andrew Shtulman

Andrew Shtulman

Why is conceptual change difficult yet possible? Ohlsson (2009/this issue) proposes that the answer can be found in the dynamics of resubsumption, or the process by which a domain of experience is resubsumed under an intuitive theory originally constructed to explain some other domain of experience. Here, it is argued that conceptual change is difficult in two distinct senses—that is, difficult to initiate and difficult to complete—and that Ohlsson's proposal addresses the latter but not the former. The implications of this argument for how conceptual change might be best facilitated in the science classroom are discussed as well.

Resurrecting Smelser: Collective Power, Generalized Belief, And Hegemonic Spaces, Mikaila Arthur Dec 2008

Resurrecting Smelser: Collective Power, Generalized Belief, And Hegemonic Spaces, Mikaila Arthur

Mikaila Mariel Lemonik Arthur

When people mobilize for collective action, it is because they want something. These wants are known as grievances, and in order for them to emerge, collectivities must break free of hegemonic power to see their true interests. This paper takes a new look at Smelser’s The Logic of Collective Action and finds that by incorporating a robust understanding of power, Smelser’s framework can provide an understanding of grievance emergence.

Updating The Attitudes Toward Computer Usage Using American Undergraduate Students, Samantha Morris, Nicole Gullekson, Brendan Morse, Paula Popovich

Brendan J. Morse

The Attitudes Toward Computer Usage Scale (ATCUS) was first developed in 1986 by [Popovich, P. M., Hyde, K. R., Zakrajsek, T., & Blumer, C. (1987). The development of the attitudes toward computer usage scale. Educational and Psychological Measurement, 47, 261–269.] using American undergraduates and has since been with a variety of populations over the past 20 years. However, many changes in the technological landscape have occurred since its development, thus creating a need for an updated scale. During the course of a three-part study, the ATCUS v. 2.0 was developed with psychometric properties similar to that of the original ATCUS. …

Tilting At Windmills? The Environmental Movement And The Emergence Of The U.S. Wind Energy Sector, Wesley Sine, Brandon Lee Dec 2008

Tilting At Windmills? The Environmental Movement And The Emergence Of The U.S. Wind Energy Sector, Wesley Sine, Brandon Lee

Brandon Lee

Through a study of the emergent U.S. wind energy sector, 1978–1992, this paper examines how large scale social movements external to an industry can influence the creation of new market opportunities and hence encourage entrepreneurship. We theorize that through the construction and propagation of cognitive frameworks, norms, values, and regulatory structures, and by offering a preexisting social structure, social movement organizations influence whether entrepreneurs attempt to start ventures in emerging sectors. We find that the direct and indirect effects of social resources (e.g., environmental groups) had a larger impact on entrepreneurial activity in this sector than the availability of natural …

Factory Farming And Potential Problems In International Trade, Brenda Lutz, James Lutz Dec 2008

Factory Farming And Potential Problems In International Trade, Brenda Lutz, James Lutz

James M Lutz

Trade in products from intensive farming of livestock has the potential to lead to disputes, especially as opposition to factory farming on ethical, health, environmental, and developmental grounds has increased. Many European countries currently prohibit livestock agricultural practices that are allowed in the United States, Canada, and elsewhere, thus creating the possibility of international economic conflict. WTO regulations permit the consideration of health and environmental factors as possible causes for placing limitations on imports but not ethical or developmental causes. While the WTO currently does not directly recognize concerns about animal welfare and developmental issues, interest groups and parties emphasizing …

How Relevant Is The Mba? Assessing The Alignment Of Required Mba Curricula And Required Managerial Competencies., Robert Rubin, Erich Dierdorff Dec 2008

How Relevant Is The Mba? Assessing The Alignment Of Required Mba Curricula And Required Managerial Competencies., Robert Rubin, Erich Dierdorff

Erich C. Dierdorff

Masters of business administration (MBA) programs are being met with escalating criticism from academics, students, and various organizational stakeholders. Central to these criticisms is the contention that the MBA is wholly out-of-touch with the “real world” and is irrelevant to the needs of practicing managers. Examining this contention, we investigated the relevancy of MBA curricula in relation to managerial competency requirements. Relying on an empirically derived competency model from 8,633 incumbent managers across 52 managerial occupations, our results showed that behavioral competencies indicated by managers to be most critical are the very competencies least represented in required MBA curricula. Findings …

Longitudinal Analysis Of Early Semantic Networks Preferential Attachment Or Preferential Acquisition?, Thomas Hills, Mounir Maouene, Josita Maouene, Adam Sheya, Linda Smith Dec 2008

Longitudinal Analysis Of Early Semantic Networks Preferential Attachment Or Preferential Acquisition?, Thomas Hills, Mounir Maouene, Josita Maouene, Adam Sheya, Linda Smith

Josita C Maouene

Analyses of adult semantic networks suggest a learning mechanism involving preferential attachment: A word is more likely to enter the lexicon the more connected the known words to which it is related. We introduce and test two alternative growth principles: preferential acquisition— words enter the lexicon not because they are related to well-connected words, but because they connect well to other words in the learning environment—and the lure of the associates—new words are favored in proportion to their connections with known words. We tested these alternative principles using longitudinal analyses of developing networks of 130 nouns children learn prior to the …

Making Change: A Six-Month Review, Gregory Koger Dec 2008

Making Change: A Six-Month Review, Gregory Koger

Gregory Koger

This article surveys President Obama's policy agenda-setting for the first six months of his term. I consider whether the conditions ripe for an ambitious policy agenda and summarize the logic of Presidential agenda-setting. I use this framework to explain the Democrats' agenda for 2009, summarize their progress thus far, and discuss the implications for the Democratic Party in 2010 and after. Although the Democrats have made significant progress on their policy goals, they have not reaped the full political rewards from this success. Instead, the majority party will likely be judged on the pace of economic recovery and whether they …
