Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Vince McMahon, chairman of World Wrestling Entertainment, is a unique corporate leader. He is also a performer for his entertainment company and the WWE possesses a unique connection with its audience. The WWE and professional wrestling are influential elements of popular culture. The study of corporate image management has been the focus of many organizational communication studies. One specific genre of rhetorical criticism in this area is image restoration studies. This genre concerns itself with how corporate leaders handle themselves in situations that challenge their company's reputation. Image restoration studies have been limited to their own genre and have rarely …

The Value Of Inaugurals: Analysis Of Construction, Joseph M. Valenzano Iii
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An analysis of modem mass mediated presidential inaugurals was conducted through the use of close textual analysis of each speech as well as an historical analysis of the development of the mass media since the nation's birth. In an effort to identify the goals, themes and strategies used by presidents in their inaugurals, seven pre-Kennedy and every post-Kennedy first inaugural address were analyzed. Using the work of Campbell and Jamieson (1991) as a stepping stone for the identification of these themes, seven themes and their various strategies of enactment were uncovered. Each of these themes were found to be enacted …

Fair Weather Or Foul? Maine's Business Climate Revisted, Bureau Of Labor Education. University Of Maine
Bureau of Labor Education
There is no shortage of analyses of the problems of Maine’s economy, or of proposed solutions. Once again, a number of recent reports have argued that Maine has a highly unfavorable business climate, characterized by excessive taxes and excessive regulation. These reports go on to argue that Maine must improve its business climate through such suggested changes as an overhaul of the tax system, elimination of property taxes on business equipment purchases, reducing the state’s regulatory burden, and reducing Maine’s supposedly high “tax burden.” Although the support for these proposals is framed as being “irrefutable,” in reality many of the …

Maine Primary Partners In Caregiving, Eastern Agency On Aging, University Of Maine Center On Aging
Maine Center on Aging Research and Evaluation
The Maine Primary Partners in Caregiving project placed an emphasis on identification of caregivers and providing support to this group of individuals. Eighty percent of all elder caregiving occurs within the home setting, and this is often stressful due to constant challenges. The goals of this project involve demonstrating that rural primary health care practices are an effective point of early intervention, to show that caregivers will accept and utilize information, support and training, to demonstrate that the multiple risks of rural caregiving will be ameliorated by a combination of information, support, and training, by MPPC Caregiver Specialists, and to …

Umaine Professors Study The Link Between Racial Prejudice And The Punishment Of Criminals, Gladys Ganiel
Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
During the past 30 years, the criminal justice system in the United States has meted out increasingly harsher punishments for offenders, so that today the U.S. imprisonment rate is the highest in the Western industrial world. Research by two University of Maine sociology professors suggests that racial prejudice against African-Americans is one of the underlying factors in the creation of public policies favoring crime control.

A Single Subject Investigation Of Behavioral And Cognitive Therapies For Body Dysmorphic Disorder, April O'Grady
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), a psychological disorder characterized by an intense preoccupation with an imagined physical defect, causes extreme distress and leads to depression, divorce, and suicide. Currently, empiricallysupported treatments include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors, however, one important component of treatment literature yet to be investigated is the relative efficacy of cognitive or behavior therapy as a sole treatment. In particular, examinations of change processes throughout the course of treatment are needed. Thus, the identification of necessary treatment components in the CBT package and the isolation of specific change processes could lead to a more streamlined and …

Thinking Outside The Box: The Challenge Of Maine's Regional Service Centers, Bureau Of Labor Education. University Of Maine
Thinking Outside The Box: The Challenge Of Maine's Regional Service Centers, Bureau Of Labor Education. University Of Maine
Bureau of Labor Education
The challenges facing regional service center communities in Maine need to be addressed by creative problem solving which goes beyond the simplistic and flawed assumptions of the "Closed Loop" model of service center revenue. Many existing strategies to increase municipal revenue through tax incentives and inappropriate economic development are often counterproductive to the long-term well-being of service center communities and their quality of life. The health of RSC's is critically important for the well-being of the state as a whole, and the taxpayers in these communities should not be expected to assume the entire financial burden of providing needed services …

Continuing In Overtime: Women Of Retirement Age Who Are Still At Work, Elizabeth Johns
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the experiences of retirement-age Maine women (age 65 or older) who are still in the workforce. According to the U.S. Census, just 10 percent of women in this age group were in the national workforce in the year 2000. Yet various socioeconomic factors suggest that more older workers will stay at work longer, reversing a long-standing trend toward earlier retirement. For women, such factors include improved health and longevity; concentration in the low-wage work sector; career interruptions; the high incidence of divorce; inadequate retirement savings; and personal investment in careers. Thus, the experiences of today's older working …

Room Of Confession: An Investigation Into The Challenges And Possible Applications Of Primary Narrative For Use In Middle School Peer Harassment Intervention, Dorothy D. Foote
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Peer harassment is an omnipresent reality in our schools today. The literature reviewed for this paper examines harassment and victimization on several levels (e.g., individual behaviors of target and perpetrator, various forms of victimization, group processes, family dynamics, and structural characteristics of larger units such as the classroom and the school). The literature identifies a number of prevention and intervention strategies designed to address this issue in a school setting, with much of the emphasis on the classroom teacher or guidance department. One strategy not found in the current literature is storytelling in the form of primary narrative. This thesis …

Term Limits, The Standing Committees, And Institutional Response, Matthew C. Moen, Kenneth Palmer
Term Limits, The Standing Committees, And Institutional Response, Matthew C. Moen, Kenneth Palmer
Maine Policy Review
Through citizen initiative in 1993, Maine passed a term limits bill that now prevents legislators with eight years of consecutive service from seeking reelection. Although touted as a means of eliminating careerism in public service and as a means of bringing fresh blood and new policy initiative to Augusta, many now question whether limits on service have hampered legislative efficiency through the loss of experienced leadership and institutional memory. Moen and Palmer examine the impact of term limits on the legislature’s standing committees. While noting adverse impacts such as heavier workloads, they also find an institution hard at work to …

A Sampler From The New Historical Atlas Of Maine: Religion In Maine, Burton Hatlen, Joshua M. Smith, Peter Lodge, Michael Hermann
Maine Policy Review
This article offers an example of work-in-progress on a significant project to develop an historical atlas of Maine. Although an article depicting religious settlement in Maine may seem far removed from the policy analyses typically featured in the journal, religious participation is a fundamental aspect of civic engagement in the United States. Thus, we feature here a glimpse of Maine’s religious heritage. We also present Maine Policy Review’s first full color pullout, which is intended to give readers a visual as well as textual portrait of religious settlement in the Kennebec Valley and Portland through the first half of …
History + Resources = A Sense Of Place, Wendy Griswold
History + Resources = A Sense Of Place, Wendy Griswold
Maine Policy Review
Unlike many states, Maine has an unusually strong “sense of place,” or cultural regionalism. Wendy Griswold explores where this unusually strong sense comes from, and how it can be further nourished through literature. In doing so, she strengthens the argument for investments in cultural-heritage objects and activities as a means not only of reinforcing an already strong sense of identity among Mainers, but also of promoting Maine as a tourism destination.
Gubernatorial Power And The Struggle For Executive Efficiency In Twentieth Century Maine, Paul H. Mills
Gubernatorial Power And The Struggle For Executive Efficiency In Twentieth Century Maine, Paul H. Mills
Maine Policy Review
In this commentary, Paul Mills discusses the balance between the executive and legislative branches of Maine state government in the twentieth century, noting that from 1986 to the time of the writing of this commentary (2002), the state’s governors have had a different political affiliation than the legislatures elected to serve with them. He remarks that even as the mechanics of government have become more efficient through reforms, Maine people have created and enforced a system that puts the governor and legislature at odds, hampering their ability to move forward.
Maine Code Of Election Ethics, Gregory P. Gallant
Maine Code Of Election Ethics, Gregory P. Gallant
Maine Policy Review
In the Margaret Chase Smith Essay, Gregory Gallant discusses the voluntary Maine Code of Election Ethics, sponsored and organized by the University of Maine’s Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center and the Margaret Chase Smith Library in Skowhegan. The code is a voluntary effort designed to elevate political discourse in Maine’s federal and gubernatorial elections. Gallant reflects on the ways in which this code reinforces Margaret Chase Smith’s recognition of the critical role played by civic engagement in American society.
Why More Is Required To Address Maine’S Childhood Lead-Poisoning Problem, David Littell
Why More Is Required To Address Maine’S Childhood Lead-Poisoning Problem, David Littell
Maine Policy Review
Although largely hidden from the public eye, childhood lead poisoning has been identified as one of Maine’s leading environmental health problems. Recent data show not only that lead-poisoning levels are unacceptably high among Maine’s children, but also that screening rates are lower than recommended by national health organizations and lower than in other New England states. David Littell discusses why childhood lead poisoning is such a problem in Maine and what can be done to remedy the situation, providing a thorough examination of how children are exposed to lead and the magnitude of the problem. He reviews the state’s existing …
