Black Women Managers And Participatory Action Research, Gloria Gordon Phd
Black Women Managers And Participatory Action Research, Gloria Gordon Phd
Gloria Gordon PhD
This paper informs on the work of an action research group set up to investigate the status and experiences of black women managers within an organisational context in the UK. It relates how the group rapidly becomes a ‘participatory’ action research group when it is recognised that the black women managers share the common perception that theirs’ is an experience of oppression and potential powerlessness in their organisational setting. Empowerment results as common experiences shared are identified also the immediate and longer term steps being taken towards their ‘emancipation’.
Liberty And Tolerance, Raphael Cohen-Almagor
Liberty And Tolerance, Raphael Cohen-Almagor
raphael cohen-almagor
The underlying presupposition of the concept of freedom is that the doers are autonomous to assert themselves, to make critical reflections, and to lead their lives independently. A person whose autonomy is absent is said to be unfree. Thus, it has been argued that whatever we think ought to be included in what passes for a liberal view, the affirmation of a picture of individual political autonomy, and institutionalized tolerance for that autonomy, cannot be left out. Here I wish to expand on the relationships between liberty and autonomy.
Instrumental Strategy Or Symbolic Realignment: A Rhetoric Analysis Of One Document Of "Popular Front Of Liberation Of Palestine", Weider Shu
Weider Shu
There are two different theories about the nature of rhetoric: instrumental strategy and symbolic realignment. The former perspective assumes the existence of "rationality" and focuses on whether the rhetoric adopted by the specific individual or organization is a right means to achieve a distinctive end. The latter approach addresses the nature of "non-negotiable demands" and focuses on the essential meaning of rhetoric itself. To resolve the argument between these two theories, I explore the intrinsic property of revolutionary rhetoric through examining one document of the "Popular Front for Liberation of Palestine." After reviewing the context, critical events, actors, and key …

Overcoming Racism In Environmental Decision Making (Cover Story), Robert D. Bullard

Opening Paragraph: Despite the recent attempts by federal agencies to reduce environmental and health threats in the United States, inequities persist.[1] If a community is poor or inhabited largely by people of color, there is a good chance that it receives less protection than a community that is affluent or white.[2] This situation is a result of the country's environmental policies, most of which "distribute the costs in a regressive pattern while providing disproportionate benefits for the educated and wealthy."[3] Even the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was not designed to address environmental policies and practices that result in unfair outcomes. …
