Patient Adherence And Adjustment In Renal Dialysis: A Person X Treatment Interactive Approach, Alan Christensen, Timothy Smith, Charles Turner, Kirt Cundick Nov 1994

Patient Adherence And Adjustment In Renal Dialysis: A Person X Treatment Interactive Approach, Alan Christensen, Timothy Smith, Charles Turner, Kirt Cundick

Alan J. Christensen

We classified 52 in-center hemodialysis patients and 34 self-treated, continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients on two latent variable indices reflecting patient coping style (i.e., Information Vigilance and Active Coping). The concurrent and prospective interactive effects of Dialysis Type and Coping Style were examined on patient dietary and medication adherence and on patient depression. In cross-sectional analyses, higher Information Vigilance was associated with better dietary adherence for CAPD patients but poorer adherence for In-Center Hemodialysis patients. No significant effects were found on a measure of medication adherence. Information Vigilance exerted a concurrent main effect on depression, such that higher scores …

How Radical Is Lani Guinier? , Michael E Lewyn Nov 1994

How Radical Is Lani Guinier? , Michael E Lewyn

Michael E Lewyn

In 1993, Lani Guinier was nominated to head the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division. Her nomination was withdrawn after she was accused of being too liberal, if not radical, on issues relating to voting rights law. This article discusses her views, and finds that her writings were not clear enough to either support or debunk the accusations of radicalism.

Predictors Of Survival Among Hemodialysis Patients: Effect Of Perceived Family Support, Alan Christensen, John Wiebe, Timothy Smith, Charles Turner Oct 1994

Predictors Of Survival Among Hemodialysis Patients: Effect Of Perceived Family Support, Alan Christensen, John Wiebe, Timothy Smith, Charles Turner

Alan J. Christensen

The authors examined the role of perceived family support and symptoms of depression as predictors of survival in a sample of 78 in-center hemodialysis patients. Cox regression analysis revealed significant effects for family support (p<.005), blood urea nitrogen (p<.01), and age (p<.005). The effect for depression was not significant. The Cox model indicated that a 1-point increase on the family support measure was associated with a 13% reduction in the hazard rate (i.e., mortality). Estimated 5-year mortality rates among low family support patients were approximately 3 times higher than estimated mortality for high support patients. Differences in patient adherence to the dietary and medication regimens failed to explain the significant effect of family support. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2008 APA, all rights reserved)

The Forms And Limits Of Medical Ethics, Barry Hoffmaster Oct 1994

The Forms And Limits Of Medical Ethics, Barry Hoffmaster

C. Barry Hoffmaster

As medical ethics has evolved over the past several decades, it has come to be regarded as a domain of applied ethics, that is, the application of a rationally based, philosophical theory to moral problems in health care. But an array of difficulties arise in the attempt to apply general moral theories or norms to concrete problems, difficulties that expose the incompleteness and indeterminacy of philosophical moral theory. The doubtful ability of applied ethics to be practically helpful has led to the development of two main competitors. One is the attempt to reprise and rehabilitate the tradition of moral casuistry, …

Primogeniture, Monogamy, And Reproductive Success In A Stratified Society, Ted Bergstrom Oct 1994

Primogeniture, Monogamy, And Reproductive Success In A Stratified Society, Ted Bergstrom

Ted C Bergstrom

This paper explores the workings of stratified societies in which there is primogeniture and where the nobility practice monogamous marriage with a double standard of sexual fidelity. We model a simple stratified society and define the reproductive values of the male and female nobility relative to that of commoners. We then explore implications of the hypothesis that preferences have evolved to favor maximization of reproductive value. The hypothesis is tested against fragmentary data from ancient civilizations and quite detailed information about the British aristocracy in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

A Cross-Cultural Study Of Directive Sequences And Some Implications For Compliance-Gaining Research, Kristine Fitch Aug 1994

A Cross-Cultural Study Of Directive Sequences And Some Implications For Compliance-Gaining Research, Kristine Fitch

Kristine Muñoz

Compliance gaining has been widely studied in communication research as a phenomenon central to interpersonal life. Yet the category of attempts to compel the actions of others, labeled as directives in pragmatics and ethnography, has received little specific attention, despite its close connection to actual spoken life. This essay presents an ethnographic examination of directive sequences in two speech communities, one in the U.S. and one in Colombia, with emphasis on the distinctive belief systems revealed by directive use. Data from several earlier studies of compliance gaining are then reexamined to show that patterns of results obtained in those studies …

Public Information Arrival, Thomas Berry, Keith Howe Aug 1994

Public Information Arrival, Thomas Berry, Keith Howe

Thomas D Berry

The authors develop a measure of public information flow to financial markets and use it to document the patterns of information arrival, with an emphasis on the intraday flows. The measure is the number of news releases by Reuter's News Service per unit of time. The authors find that public information arrival is nonconstant, displaying seasonalities and distinct intraday patterns. Next they relate their measure of public information to aggregate measures of intraday market activity. The authors' results suggest a positive, moderate relationship between public information and trading volume but an insignificant relationship with price volatility. Copyright 1994 by American …

Thomas Hobbes's "A Discourse Of Laws", Noel B. Reynolds

Noel B Reynolds

The recent discovery that an anonymously published 1620 essay was an early writing of Thomas Hobbes invites investigation of his early thinking. Hobbes relied on mostly classical sources to advance a basically conventionalist theory of law and to anticipate twentieth century analyses of the principles of rule of law such as those made famous by F. A. Hayek and Michael Oakeshott.

On The Economics Of Polygyny, Ted Bergstrom Aug 1994

On The Economics Of Polygyny, Ted Bergstrom

Ted C Bergstrom

About 80% of all societies recorded by anthropologists are polygynous (men have many wives). Even our own society is less monogamous than claimed. This paper attempts to explain such mysteries as why bride prices and dowries are not ``opposites'', why polygamous societies are usually characterized by positive bride prices and dowry is mainly confined to monogamous societies, why polyandry (women having multiple husbands) is rare, but not extinct, and why the more you have to pay for a wife the better you will treat her.

'Once-Off' And Continuing Gains From Trade, M. Scott Taylor Aug 1994

'Once-Off' And Continuing Gains From Trade, M. Scott Taylor

M. Scott Taylor

Most Economists are familiar with the static or once-off welfare gains created by opening an economy to trade. Much less is known about how the resource reallocations necessitated by this move affect long-run growth, and hence whether they provide dynamic or continuing welfare gains in future periods. This paper employs a dynamic Ricardian trade model to provide a decomposition of the gains from trade into "once-off" and continuing categories. In one version of the model, trade is always welfare enhancing; in the other, "once-off" losses may occur alongside dynamic gains. In both versions the magnitude of the once-off and continuing …

North-South Trade And The Environment, M. Scott Taylor, Brian A. Copeland Aug 1994

North-South Trade And The Environment, M. Scott Taylor, Brian A. Copeland

M. Scott Taylor

A simple static model of North-South trade is developed to examine linkages between national income, pollution, and international trade. Two countries produce a continuum of goods, each differing in pollution intensity. We show that the higher income country chooses stronger environmental protection, and specializes in relatively clean goods. By isolating the scale, composition, and technique effects of international trade on pollution, we show that free trade increases world pollution; an increase in the Rich North's production possibilities increases pollution, while similar growth in the poor South lowers pollution; and unilateral transfers from North to South reduce worldwide pollution.
