The "Virginian-Pilot" Newspaper's Role In Moderating Norfolk, Virginia's 1958 School Desegregation Crisis, Alexander Stewart Leidholdt

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

This dissertation explores the critical role played by the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot newspaper's editor, Lenoir Chambers, in moderating public opinion during Norfolk, Virginia's, 1958/1959 public-school closing.

In 1958 the nation's attention was focused on Norfolk. In an attempt to stymy judicially mandated integration, Virginia's Governor J. Lindsay Almond, Jr., supported by the powerful political organization of United States senator Harry Flood Byrd, Sr., ordered the city to close its public schools.

Norfolk was a major urban area. Over ten thousand students were displaced by the state action; and four months after the closing, three thousand students were still receiving no education. …

Editor's Page, Lawrence Hugenberg

Basic Communication Course Annual

This volume is the result of a lot of hard work by the authors and the editorial board. When we changed the submission date to get The Annual to press earlier in the year, it meant we had to have submissions sooner than expected, reviews turned around quickly and revisions made as soon as possible. Everyone cooperated in getting this edition of The Annual out following the publisher's deadlines. I will be forever grateful for everyone's hard work, patience and understanding through this process.

The Introductory Communication Course: Results Of A National Survey, Douglas M. Trank, Pat Lewis

Basic Communication Course Annual

Data for this survey were gathered from a national sample of institutions of higher education by means of a questionnaire mailed in November of 1987.

The questionnaire and a cover letter signed by the president of the Association for Communication Administration were sent to all 2-year colleges and all 4-year and graduate institutions which have an affiliation with the Speech Communication Association or the Association for Communication Administration. In each case they were addressed to the executive officer of the relevant communication department and requested data relevant to the 1987-88 academic year.

The instrument used in this survey is a …

Instructional Communication Strategies For Adapting To A Multicultural Introductory Course, Charles A. Braithwaite, Dawn O. Braithwaite Jan 1991

Instructional Communication Strategies For Adapting To A Multicultural Introductory Course, Charles A. Braithwaite, Dawn O. Braithwaite

Basic Communication Course Annual

No educator is surprised to hear that college enrollment for members of racial and ethnic groups is continuing to rise (The Chronicle of Higher Education, 1990). However, this increase was particularly striking for us after we began teaching in the southwestern United States. We had moved from Minnesota, where the proportion of college students who are minority-group members is only 4%, to New Mexico where the proportion of college students who are minority-group members is 35%, the highest for any state in the continental United States (The Chronicle of Higher Education, 1990). We now look out into multicultural classrooms that …

Reading Our Own Speech Critiques As Texts That Reveal Educational Goals, Instructional Roles And Communicative Functions, Jo Sprague Jan 1991

Reading Our Own Speech Critiques As Texts That Reveal Educational Goals, Instructional Roles And Communicative Functions, Jo Sprague

Basic Communication Course Annual

About twenty years ago I reviewed the prescriptive literature related to classroom criticism of students’ oral performances. Basically, it consisted of a set of questions about format, timing and wording of critiques that were answered in terms of each author’s preference: “Here’s how I always do it and it works for me.” Recently I had occasion to review the current literature in preparing the instructor’s manual for a basic public speaking text. I found that not much has changed. The advice that our field has is still largely anecdotal and consists of recommending techniques for universal application. The scant research …

Summary Of Issues Discussed During The Seminar On The Introductory Course In Speech Communication, November 1990, Lawrence W. Hugenberg, Donald D. Yoder

Basic Communication Course Annual

The introductory course in communication has received considerable attention by scholars and practitioners in the past several years. Conventions, workshops and scholarly journals reflect the concerns of course directors, teachers and administrators in defining, operating and evaluating this course. Fourteen faculty convened at the SCA Annual Convention in San Francisco in November 1990 to identify and discuss the major issues relevant to directing and teaching the introductory course in communication. Five major issues were identified during the seminar. Discussion of the issues ranged from theoretical perspectives to specific action steps. This report is a summary of some of the major …

Internal-External Locus Of Control And The Life Experiences Of Soviet Pentecostal Refugees In Portland, Oregon, Amy Roberts Jan 1991

Internal-External Locus Of Control And The Life Experiences Of Soviet Pentecostal Refugees In Portland, Oregon, Amy Roberts

Dissertations and Theses

The construct internal-external locus of control was utilized to examine the Soviet Pentecostal refugees' perception of life experiences in the United States as defined by three dimensions: social, economical, and political. Unlike the majority of immigration research, which focuses on structural variables, this research further addressed the concept of acculturation as a long term process of resettlement. Subjects completed an anonymous forced choice questionnaire consisting of the Rotter (1966) locus of control instrument scale. Pearson Product moment correlation coefficients were calculated to examine the strength of the relationships between the internal-external locus of control scores and five factor analyzed life …

Operations Research And Organizational Decision-Making In Academic Libraries, Therrin C. Dahlin Jan 1991

Operations Research And Organizational Decision-Making In Academic Libraries, Therrin C. Dahlin

Faculty Publications

Operations research entered the library scene in the 1960s and '70s, and has attracted much interest from librarians. This paper examines the assumptions made by selected operations researchers concerning organizational decision-making in academic libraries. The assumptions then are compared to Richard L. Daft's contingency framework of organizational decision-making to determine the appropriateness of applying operations research assumptions and methods to organizational decision-making in an academic library setting. A review of the operations researchers' assumptions and Daft's framework suggests that the operations research approach may be appropriately applied to only a relatively narrow category of problems in academic libraries that match …

Reentry Shock In The Corporate Environment, Steven A. Locke Jan 1991

Reentry Shock In The Corporate Environment, Steven A. Locke

Dissertations and Theses

While much research and attention have focused on sojourn adjustment to a new culture, very little research has addressed readjustment to the home culture. This research studies the problems of repatriation work adjustment experienced by U.S. corporate employees. This study also.suggests that cultural readjustment is situational and a multifaceted process which is influenced by many different variables. Interviews with 25 corporate repatriated employees were conducted using a 22-question survey instrument. Repatriates were asked to rate their readjustment experiences on a seven-item Likert scale. Respondents also had the opportunity to expand on their answers with open-ended questions. Fourteen variables were examined …

A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Preaching Of Robert Lee Russell, Ben F. Pennington Jan 1991

A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Preaching Of Robert Lee Russell, Ben F. Pennington

Masters Theses

Robert Lee Russell's pulpit oratory is analyzed through a review of the literature, personal interviews and critical study of three specific sermons. The consistency of idea content and effectiveness of the preaching is evaluated according to the concepts of rhetorical analysis delineated in Nilsen's (1957) Interpretive Funnction of the Critic. Robert Russell's concepts of man [existence], ideas [knowledge], and society [values] is examined through analysis of his sermons. The results of the analysis are compared to the literature on preaching, statements from interviews with him, and comments by leaders of his congregation. It is concluded that Russell is an …

A Ritual For Attempting Leave-Taking In Colombia, Kristine Fitch Dec 1990

A Ritual For Attempting Leave-Taking In Colombia, Kristine Fitch

Kristine Muñoz

This article presents a conversational enactment of a leave-taking ritual, an archetype for Colombian spoken life, for the purpose of conversational analysis. This conversational enactment is drawn from audiotaped, naturally-occurring conversation recorded in Colombia in 1987. The purpose of analyzing this conversation is both to describe a conversational sequence which performs a symbolic activity among Colombians during leave-taking from social gatherings, and to elucidate what ethnographic information may (and may not) emerge from conversation analysis. The author of this article hopes to demonstrate that in this speech pattern an interpersonal ideology is revealed which revolves around the crucial importance of …

The Interplay Of Linguistic Universals And Cultural Knowledge In Personal Address: Colombian Madre Terms, Kristine Fitch

Kristine Muñoz

Proposes that the question that communication theories seek to answer is what kinds of resources and knowledge must be drawn upon for communication to take place. The question may usefully be pursued through the investigation of the personal address. Previous research; A study of `Madre' terms in Colombia; Results; Conclusion
