The Political Economy Of A Neighborhood Spat, Sandra Faiman-Silva
The Political Economy Of A Neighborhood Spat, Sandra Faiman-Silva
Bridgewater Review
The dramas of daily life are often substance for true anthropological inquiry because they present us with examples of social conflict and its resolution, thereby illuminating perennial questions faced by members of a society. What can a dispute between two neighbors in a not-so-remote village of Cape Cod tell us that might be of interest to students of dispute resolution, resource use, and even political economy? The dispute examined here appears to have far-reaching implications not only because of the disputants themselves, representatives of two classes of American citizenry; but also because their conflict and the process used to achieve …
The Santee Canal Sanctuary - Part Ii, Mark M. Newell
The Santee Canal Sanctuary - Part Ii, Mark M. Newell
Publications
The Old Santee Canal Sanctuary encompasses the last vestiges of a once great industrial enterprise, a scant mile or more of a 23 mile long canal, the first of its kind in America. When this archaeological project was first contemplated it was not expected to yield much in terms of resources and data.
Part I of this project, the archaeological survey of Biggin Creek and the canal, revealed the existence of an extremely rich resource - the tide-lock, several vessels, earthen works and the remains of the tide-lock gates.
Much of Part II of the project, on which this paper …
An Examination Of Subsistence, Settlement, And Chronology During The Early Woodland Kellogg Phase In The Piedmont Physiographic Province Of The Southeastern United States, William Rowe Bowen
An Examination Of Subsistence, Settlement, And Chronology During The Early Woodland Kellogg Phase In The Piedmont Physiographic Province Of The Southeastern United States, William Rowe Bowen
Doctoral Dissertations
The Early Woodland Kellogg Phase of north-central Georgia is known primarily from survey and excavation data collected during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. Knowledge and synthesis of the Kellogg Phase was restricted to site specific and cultural historical analysis. Data analysis and interpretation were based on method and theory in vogue at that time. More recent investigations indicate that Kellogg was a much more dynamic and diverse cultural manifestation than originally interpreted.
The purpose of this study is to define subsistence and settlement patterning and refine chronological placement of the Kellogg Phase by reevaluating earlier data in light of contemporary …
A Multivariate Craniometric Analysis Of Secular Change And Variation Among Recent North American Populations, Peer Henning Moore-Jansen
A Multivariate Craniometric Analysis Of Secular Change And Variation Among Recent North American Populations, Peer Henning Moore-Jansen
Doctoral Dissertations
This study presents an investigation of secular trends in craniometric variation among Afro-American and Euro-American North American populations from 1750 to the present. An additional analysis of collection specific cranial variation between two prominent anatomical collections is also undertaken. Both investigations address the question of crania variation in reference to the proper application of craniometric analysis to medico-legal identiciation of racial affiliation in forensic anthropology.
The craniometric data include individual historic specimens and cemetery populations from Canada, Philadelphia and New Orleans. Anatomical specimens are collected from the Hamann-Todd and R. J. Terry collections, and recent forensic cases are obtained from …

Sociobiological And Psychosocial Models Of Physical Attractiveness Phenomena: A Confrontation Of Theories, James M. Donovan
Sociobiological And Psychosocial Models Of Physical Attractiveness Phenomena: A Confrontation Of Theories, James M. Donovan
James M. Donovan
A majority of cultural anthropologists underestimate the value of sociobiological theory for a better understanding of human behavior. This essay attempts to demonstrate the shortcomings of this position by presenting an illustrative problem. Sexually asymmetrical physical attractiveness phenomena are examined first from a traditional psychosocial model. In its pure form this model is unable to account for the known data; when supplemented by sociobiological premises, however, these difficulties are resolved.
Porotic Hyperostosis And Artificial Cranial Deformation In Dallas Society, Stephen Patrick Langdon
Porotic Hyperostosis And Artificial Cranial Deformation In Dallas Society, Stephen Patrick Langdon
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study is to evaluate, test, and amplify Lewis and Kneberg's (1946) observation that the severity of porotic hyperostosis at Hiwassee Island is related to the degree of cranial deformation. Statistical tests indicate a moderate, although non-significant, correlation between the two conditions. It is believed that this correlation may be explained by the differential treatment of infants, rather than a direct causality.
A sample of 364 crania from four Dallas Phase sites are examined. Age, sex, and status distributions of porotic hyperostosis, cribra orbitalia, and cranial deformation are examined in a biocultural framework that emphasizes the interaction …
A Geoarchaeological Investigation Of The Rush Creek Site, Cannon County, Tennessee, Michael W. Morris
A Geoarchaeological Investigation Of The Rush Creek Site, Cannon County, Tennessee, Michael W. Morris
Masters Theses
Geoarchaeological investigations were used to assess the depositional and post-depositional processes that effected the Rush Creek Site (40CN79) in Cannon County, Tennessee. Of particular interest was a buried landform, found in the floodplain of the East Fork Stones River, that was sealed by sterile alluvium. This formation contained both prehistoric and historic artifacts within the same context. The stratigraphy of the site was determined by deep testing to describe the site and the landforms associated with the site. Samples collected from the exposed profiles of the deep test pits were subjected to particle size, pH, carbon, and phosphorus analyses. Statistical …
The Analysis Of Saw Marks In Bone, Mark G. Guilbeau
The Analysis Of Saw Marks In Bone, Mark G. Guilbeau
Masters Theses
It has only been in the last two decades that the special circumstances of saw marks in bone have been addressed. The importance of these marks in forensic examinations has received little attention in the English literature, but this trend is changing.
The examination of saw marks in bone is an area of research which may prove useful in a variety of scientific investigations. This thesis examines the variation present in the saw marks made by a group of hand saws and provides a methodology for the examination and analysis of these tool marks.
The results of this investigation prove …
An Experimental Examination Of Trampling Effects On The Lateral Movement Of Surface Artifacts, Richard Wayne Stoops Jr.
An Experimental Examination Of Trampling Effects On The Lateral Movement Of Surface Artifacts, Richard Wayne Stoops Jr.
Masters Theses
An often cited but little understood archaeological disturbance process is the effect of a site's occupants walking across the surface. Human foot traffic will move and alter archaeological materials, artifacts, in characteristic ways. How surface items will respond to trampling is dependent on a variety of factors. These factors will determine the extent and dimensions available for movement. By controlling for some of the relevant variables, the effects of other variables can be examined.
In this thesis, experiments are described that identify each of the variables that influence or may possibly influence how surface artifacts respond to foot traffic. The …

The Last Smokehouse: Lubec and the Herring Smoking Industry of Maine. Funded initially by the Maine Humanities Council, this hour-long documentary film will explore the problems of the smoked herring industry in the state of Maine. The goal is to increase public awareness not only of the plight of small local industries in the modem mega-business world but also — and perhaps more importantly — of what happens to a community when one of its long-time traditional industries dies. The filmmakers, Andrea Truppin and Michel Chalufour, are now in the scriptwriting stage.
Designing An Instructor's Manual For Introducing Cultural Concepts In The Medical School Curriculum, Barbara C. Nicodemus
Designing An Instructor's Manual For Introducing Cultural Concepts In The Medical School Curriculum, Barbara C. Nicodemus
Dissertations and Theses
Medical educators recognize the need for including cultural insights into the training of future physicians. This instructor's manual suggests selected journal articles and guidelines for their use in each of the clinical courses to illustrate the relevance of culture, inter- and intraethnic differences, an attitude of cultural relativity, and the importance of language use and communications skills for medical practice. The articles are found in journals typically available to medical students. This manual provides a baseline integrative approach applicable to other specialized training programs. A recommendation is made for evaluation and revision of history-taking interview forms to elicit additional culture-specific …
An Estimation Of Relatedness Within Two Oregon Populations Using Isonymy Analysis, Maria Michalczyk
An Estimation Of Relatedness Within Two Oregon Populations Using Isonymy Analysis, Maria Michalczyk
Dissertations and Theses
The study of human relatedness has long interested the population geneticist. One technique for the estimation of population relatedness is the use of isonymy analysis. The isonymy inbreeding coefficient is analogous to Wright's inbreeding coefficient F. Isonomy analysis can yield comparable results to population studies done by other means such as pedigree analysis, serological studies, and anthropometric analysis.
The data used for this study was obtained from marriage records and telephone directories. Same last name marriages were observed for legitimacy and recorded when verified. A pool of last names were drawn from the marriage records. This list was used to …

A Trace Element Analysis Of The Gordon Town Site (40dv6): An Investigation Of Intra-Individual Variation And Dietary Inference, Susan Mary Thurston Myster
Masters Theses
The results of trace element analyses of archaeological human bone have been used to investigate questions pertaining to the dietary practices and subsistence behavior of various prehistoric populations. As a technique still in the experimental stage, however, a number of methodological difficulties have been identified. This thesis examined two aspects of trace element analyses of human bone. First examined was a methodological problem that has received increased attention since the initiation of this study: the documentation, measurement and control of intraindividual variability of trace element concentrations. Secondly, the validity of dietary inference from trace element concentrations were addressed using the …
Secular Trends In Stature In An Historic Sioux Population, Joseph M. Prince
Secular Trends In Stature In An Historic Sioux Population, Joseph M. Prince
Masters Theses
This study attempts to explore the possibility of the occurrence of secular trends in height in an historic population of Sioux American Indians, and presents the results from an analysis on anthropometric data from two primary sources. One data set was collected in the late 19th century under the direction of Franz Boas. A later early 20th century set was collected by Dr. James R. Walker. A cross sectional design is used to examine an unusually long span of Sioux history; ca. 1820-1880 for the adult (individuals over 20 yrs.) analysis, and ca. 1892-1907 for the children (aged 6 to …

Just as I believe, as an oral historian, that there is no such thing as oral history, only history, I also believe as a folklorist that there is no such thing as folk art as an entity distinct from other kinds of art, say "primitive" or "high" art. There is only art, the aesthetic response, the shaping of the world experienced into meaningful and apposite forms that can be shared with others. The creation and enjoyment of what we call art is fundamental to being human; it is not limited to any one social class or community but, as my …
