Layoffs, Wages And Unemployment Insurance, Kenneth Burdett, Bryce Hool
Layoffs, Wages And Unemployment Insurance, Kenneth Burdett, Bryce Hool
Research Collection School Of Economics
The influence of unemployment insurance on wage and layoff behavior is analyzed in the context of optimal labor contracts. Responses of contract terms to changes in economic parameters are shown to depend in general on the nature of the initial contract, the degree of workers' risk aversion, and the resolution of bargaining conflict. Layoffs are not necessarily reduced by an increase in experience rating or a reduction in the UI benefit. Product demand fluctuations tend to induce procyclical employment fluctuations but not wage fluctuation. An implication of optimal contracts with private insurance suggests a reason for government intervention in UI …
The Relationship Between Systems Theory And Behavior Analysis, Michael B. Oberlin
The Relationship Between Systems Theory And Behavior Analysis, Michael B. Oberlin
Dissertations
This paper provides a conceptual framework which clarifies the relationship between General Systems Theory and Behavior Analysis. This framework is supplied by a theoretical notion borrowed from Simon (1962), the notion of "dynamics of interaction." "Interaction" refers to interaction between the units of analysis of science, e.g., in the analysis of behavior, stimuli, responses, and consequences in economics, units of supply and demand. The paradigm of Behavior Analysis is seen to accommodate a "higher-frequency dynamics" found in subsystems; and General Systems Theory, along with disciplines like Economics and Organizational Analysis, accommodates a "lower-frequency dynamics" found in systems. Argument is based …
An Application Of Performance Analysis In A Food Cooperative, Lone Milani
An Application Of Performance Analysis In A Food Cooperative, Lone Milani
Dissertations
A performance systems analysis was applied in a small business to diagnose problems and direct decisions in order to solve performance deficiencies of that organization. A "performance audit," as the approach is called, consists of analyzing an operating system from the most general to the most specific levels of vantage (i.e., levels at which a system operates). The levels of vantage for any system are: philosophical, cultural, policy, strategic, tactical, and logistic. At each level the actual performance was compared to predetermined standards called "exemplary performance." This comparison facilitated the diagnosis of the organization's deficiencies.
The study attempted to design …
Harris Lines As Indicators Of Stress: An Analysis Of Tibiae From The Crow Creek Massacre Victims, Steven A. Symes
Harris Lines As Indicators Of Stress: An Analysis Of Tibiae From The Crow Creek Massacre Victims, Steven A. Symes
Masters Theses
Horizontal lines of increased density in bone, or Harris lines, have intrigued scientists for over a century. While earliest Harris line research dealt with medical aspects of line formation, most recent emphasis has been anthropological in nature, utilizing Harris lines as non-specific indicators of stress. The purpose of this study is to test the usefulness of Harris lines as they are applied anthropologically.
A sample of 122 adult distal tibiae x-rays are used in this study. This skeletal sample represents massacre victims from the Initial Coalescent Tradition of the Crow Creek Site in central South Dakota. Each bone was sexed …
Paleoethnobotany Of The Late Woodland Mason Phase In The Elk And Duck River Valleys, Tennessee, J. David Mcmahan
Paleoethnobotany Of The Late Woodland Mason Phase In The Elk And Duck River Valleys, Tennessee, J. David Mcmahan
Masters Theses
A substantial sample of paleobotanical residues from two Late Woodland Mason phase components in southeastern Middle Tennessee were examined. The data were analyzed to determine what plants were available to Mason populations, which of those plants were utilized, the local geographic areas exploited, and the impact of man's procurement practices on the environment. Inferences derived from paleobotanical analysis are used to suggest a pattern of Mason plant utilization that can be integrated with other subsystems to provide definitive statements concerning the cultural whole. These statements provide a basis for comparing Mason with other cultural manifestations in the local cultural sequence …

Argumentation In Romans 1-11, Mary Margaret Walker
Argumentation In Romans 1-11, Mary Margaret Walker
Theses and Dissertations
This study addresses some of the problems of the Book of Romans in Koine Greek as a source text for a translation, particularly into non-Indo-European languages which do not share common cultural, grammatical or rhetorical conventions with the original audience for which Romans was written. A basic question broached was, "What is argumentation - as a discourse genre, as an act, as a pattern of grammatical reflexes?"
The discourse grammar model of Dr. R. E. Longacre was the main point of departure. Important secondary sources were the work of Teun A. van Dijk on macrostructure; the semantic structure analysis method …

Derivation And Test Of Predictions Of A Discrete Latent State Model For Signed Number Addition Test Performance, Kentaro Yamamoto
Derivation And Test Of Predictions Of A Discrete Latent State Model For Signed Number Addition Test Performance, Kentaro Yamamoto
Dissertations and Theses
This study is an investigation of the performance of a discrete latent state model devised by Paulson (1982) to account for signed-number arithmetic test data gathered by Birenbaum and Tatsuoka (1980). One hundred twenty nine students took a test which consists of sixteen item types with four parallel arithmetic items of each type. The present study utilizes the five addition item types of four items each; hence, there are four parallel subtests. Responses to the addition items can be analyzed in terms of two components: the sign component (is the sign correct?), and the absolute value component (is the size …
