The purpose of this study was to investigate current practices used by clinicians when diagnosing children with AD/HD as well as to explore possible relationships between practices, professional disciplines, opinions, and theoretical leanings.;The study utilized a researcher designed questionnaire mailed to licensed Psychiatrists, Pediatricians, Clinical Psychologists, and Counselors in Virginia. The sample included 274 professionals.;Hypotheses examined relationships between professional discipline and use of assessment methodologies, consultation practices, and classification system preferences, as well as relationships between opinions about classification and assessment of AD/HD and practitioners' opinions about assessment practices.;It was found that physical examination was the only variable with any …

The study examined the effects of integrating a cognitive-developmental approach with professional ethics training on the moral and conceptual development, self-presentation styles, and ethical decision-making skills of graduate counseling students. The sample was comprised of students who enrolled in counseling courses at the College of William and Mary. The ethics intervention group was compared to two groups; one group who received the traditionally taught ethics course, and one group who had not taken the ethics course at William and Mary. The purpose of this study was to investigate National Certified Counselors and relationships between their experience, credentials, ego development, and conceptual level. Benefits to continuing education requirements, developmental growth, and counselor insight were identified as justification for the research. It was hypothesized that there would be statistically significant positive correlations between counselor experience, credentials, ego development, and conceptual level. Four hundred (400) National Certified Counselors were randomly selected and contacted by mail survey using a General Questionnaire, Loevinger's Sentence Completion Test, and Hunt's Paragraph Completion Method. This study applied the Transtheoretical model of change to a court ordered/DUI client population to aid counselors in developing a more effective differential treatment model. Clients were individuals convicted of DUI and referred for treatment to one of 4 community mental health centers. at their first meeting, 150 clients completed surveys measuring stage of change (SOC), processes of change, self-efficacy, and decisional balance concerning their drinking. Demographic data was also taken. After treatment, number of sessions attended and successful or unsuccessful discharge was recorded.;Results found significantly more men (122) than women (28). The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of one short-term training model, Parents and Children Together (PACT), on parent stress and child behavior for families enrolled in the Head Start program. PACT is a program of structured play activities designed to replicate the interactions between parents and children during the first developmental stage of life. This study measured whether the use of visualization had an impact on levels of depression, acting out behavior and ego development.;The sample consisted of 63 teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 who had been referred to a residential group home by the court system. The purpose of this study was to examine state legislation and policy related to comprehensive, integrated services for students with serious emotional disturbance. Legislation and policy documents from nine states, Virginia (the pilot study), Indiana, Maryland, New Jersey, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Utah, Vermont, and Wisconsin, were examined. These documents were compared to a set of components extracted from the literature as recommended practice. The document analysis was confirmed through telephone interviews with state-level policymakers in each state's department of education, department of mental health, and/or department of children's services. An extensive review of the literature on foster parent effectiveness yielded only one study (Horner and Ray, 1990) specifically focusing on "treatment" foster parents. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between moral and ego development and treatment foster parent effectiveness and attitudes. The Defining Issues Test, Washington University Sentence Completion Test, and Adult-Adolescent Parenting Inventory were administered to 103 treatment foster parents and the Treatment Foster Parent Effectiveness Scale was completed for each of the foster parents by their primary caseworker. Subjects were fourth and fifth grade students from two different elementary schools. It investigated the direction and strength of the relationship of level of moral development, locus of control, HIV knowledge and HIV attitudes.;Locus of control was measured by Rotter's Internal-External Locus of Control Scale (I-E Scale). The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among prolonged teacher stress (or burnout), teachers' perceptions of leadership style adaptability, and teacher irrational belief systems.;The York County School Division was chosen because of the relative availability of subjects. Three surveys measuring teachers' perceptions of leadership style and style adaptability, teachers' irrational belief systems, and prolonged teacher stress, were disseminated among elementary classroom teachers in the county. This was a descriptive study of 140 volunteer therapists in the Richmond, Virginia metropolitan area who identified themselves as either "brief" or "time-unlimited" in their practice of marital therapy. The sample, predominantly female and highly educated, had a mean age of 46.9 years.;For the purpose of this study, brief marital therapy was defined as eight or fewer therapeutic sessions within a 3-month period, and time-unlimited marital therapy was designated as therapy lasting longer than eight sessions or over 3 months. This study investigated how adult children of alcoholics differ from adult children of non-alcoholics when measured on the personality characteristics of autonomy, inferiority and intimacy. The subjects were randomly selected from the employees of a large school district in southeast Virginia. Each subject received a questionnaire package that included the Adjective Check List, Personal Orientation Inventory, Children of Alcoholics Screening Test and The Personal History Questionnaire. The return rate for questionnaire packages was 72%. All subjects were volunteers and their identities remained anonymous to the researcher. The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of psychodrama treatment on assertiveness and locus of control for women who sought out-patient therapy to deal with the experience of having been battered. Subjects were required to have been out of their abusive relationships for at least two months.;Forty women completed the study. This study focused on female elders living in age-segregated communities. It investigated the direction and strength of the relationship of Openness to Experience and Neuroticism to the resolution of Erik Erikson's Trust and Integrity stages, and to a Total Resolution score. The 62 volunteer subjects, age 67 to 99, lived in eleven retirement and/or assisted care facilities in Richmond, Virginia.;Personality domains were measured by the NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI). This study investigated whether therapists' health of family of origin, marital adjustment, and personality traits influence their approach to therapy in systematic and measurable ways. Approach to therapy referred to: (1) relative emphasis on clients' family of origin versus current presenting problems, and (2) preference for doing individual versus conjoint marital therapy.;This study employed a survey design. The purpose of this study was to investigate three models of family therapy: Bowen Theory, Haley's Strategic Family Therapy, and the Satir Process Model. The question that was explored concerned what family therapy approaches achieve what types of engagement, dropout, completion, satisfaction with treatment, locus of control, and family functioning outcomes with what kinds of delinquent families. Experienced counselors in three eastern states were surveyed about the incidence of racial issues presented by their White clients and were asked to complete the White Racial Identity Attitudes Scales (WRIAS) and to respond to a questionnaire about a White client presenting a racial issue. Nearly a quarter of the counselors responding to the survey reported having some clients raising racial issues as main issues in counseling, and 45% reported having some clients bringing up racial issues relevant to their counseling. The purpose of this study was to test the Bean and Metzner Model of Nontraditional Student Attrition (1985) in a small, rural community college environment. The influence of selected sets of background, environmental, and academic variables from the model were tested, in addition to, the individual variables contained within each set. The purpose of this study was to investigate the classification congruency of Virginia school psychologists as it related to assessment profile analysis and, additionally, to examine assessment instrument rankings and demographic variables when classifying targeted handicapping conditions.
