Diversifying Collections, Jessica Schomberg

Library Services Publications

Hands-on activity to help participants find a diversity of materials to support their communities and expand their collections. This will range from identifying relevant book and media awards to finding ways to promote these materials. We will also include discussion of how to advocate for policy statements expressing the value of diverse, accessible collections as well as ways to advocate for funds to support these collections. Participants will be encouraged to share their insights.

This paper uses informetrics methods to explore the use of LibGuides to benchmark and select books at the Mafikeng Campus of the North-West University (NWU) in South Africa. The books selected or recommended by librarians in all public university LibGuides were identified and compared with those of NWU Library and Information Services-Mafikeng Campus. A list of all books that were not available at the Campus but conform to the collection development policy of NWU Library and Information Services was sent to the relevant academic departments for selection. The books that were recommended for purchase by the departments were then ordered. …

Women In Stem In Higher Education: A Citation Analysis Of The Current Literature, Heidi Blackburn, Jason A. Heppler

Increased efforts to diversify science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education in the United States have increased the number of studies regarding the experiences of women in STEM programs in higher education. Using citation analysis and data visualization, this study aims to determine the major publishers and journals in this area. We reviewed 647 articles published between 2007 and 2018. Citations were concentrated on a small core set of journals and then scattered over other publications. Overall, just 3% percent of the publications accounted for 25% percent of the citations. The ramifications for STEM librarians and collection development are discussed.

The purpose of this study is to investigate school and year wise growth and amount utilized for print books and periodicals collections in Central Library, Tezpur University during the period 2013-2017. Data about new addition, year wise expenditure of books and periodicals for the period under study were collected from the annual reports, NAAC reports and from the available records maintained in the library. This research examined the beliefs and actions of US midwestern librarians concerning intellectual freedom and collection development. The results are presented in two complementary articles; the first article provided some background and the results pertaining to intellectual freedom, whereas the second article focuses on the results for collection development questions and concludes with a broader discussion. While the first article focused on intellectual freedom beliefs, the second focuses more on actions that are thought to be influenced by those beliefs. We produce a variety of collection analysis reports which are used for several collection management functions, such as assessment, evaluation, and administration. We have now developed a Collection Review report which includes 100+ journal and package level data elements and dozens of data visualizations, built up from several hundred underlying lists from numerous data sources. Standards Collections: Considerations For The Future, Margaret Phillips

Technical standards are a form of gray literature that describe consensus for a wide variety of applications. They promote safety, quality, and interchangeability of parts. In academic libraries, standards have largely been associated with engineering collections, despite having connections to many disciplines. Engineering and technology accreditation bodies and employers continue to expect graduates to have knowledge and experience with standards upon graduation. This article provides a brief history of standards collection development in academic libraries, discusses the challenges of standards collections, shares a case study of standards information literacy curricula integration, and offers considerations for the future of standards collections.
