House Of Cards: The Academic Library Media Center In The Era Of Streaming Video, Rachel King Nov 2014

House Of Cards: The Academic Library Media Center In The Era Of Streaming Video, Rachel King

Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications

In a time of increasing financial pressures on universities, the expense of library resources—and the potential for cost inflation—threaten the academic library collection. This article asks whether the academic library media center will be able to continue to offer a stable inventory of films, given the legal and commercial structures currently in place. It provides a history of the film industry’s interactions with its intermediaries, forecasts some of the obstacles to ongoing feature film affordability and access in libraries, offers strategies for librarians, and suggests some cause for hope.

Four librarians from four different collection areas- the humanities, the social sciences, and 2 unique areas in engineering- all set out to see if evaluating the collection against recent publications by faculty and students can foster stronger engagement between them and the subject collectors in their areas.

Responding To The Need For Change Through Strategic Collection Development, Barbara M. Pope

Faculty Submissions

Is your library’s print serials collection irrelevant and little used? Have you been given a mandate to change? Has your library’s budget been cut while you must provide access to relevant serials and databases?

In June of 2013, Axe Library had a change of leadership and at the same time, staff were given a mandate to change by university administration with no idea of what that meant. In addition, the library faced a crippling budget shortfall that meant subscription cuts were inevitable. As a result, staff came to realize that the status quo of doing their jobs as they knew …

The Book Vs. E-Book: E-Book Survey Report, Susan R. Silverman

Dacus Library Faculty Publications

During the Spring Semester 2014 at Winthrop University an E-book survey was administered to Winthrop faculty, staff, and students. The objectives of the survey were (1) to inform the patrons that the library does have e-books available to them, (2) to ascertain if they have used any of the e-books for their research, (3) to determine which format, print or e-book, is their primary preference and (4) which format do they think is most important as part of the permanent library collection. The results, including comments from the faculty, staff and students, were compiled and are presented in this paper.

Libraries Faculty and Staff Creative Materials

This presentation was given to subject specialist librarians at Purdue University to engage the topic of research data in the context of collection development. The Purdue University Research Repository (PURR, http://purr.purdue.edu) creates opportunities for librarians to interact with researchers, including email notifications when a project is created, when a grant is awarded, and when a dataset is submitted for publication. Next, three subject specialist librarians from Agriculture, Engineering, and Mathematics each shared recent examples of their experiences in working with researchers to acquire new data collections for PURR. Lastly, a discussion of library science principles was facilitated, in particular, including …

Management Of Content Development And Subject Engagement Through An Arts Matrix Model: A Case Study, Casey D. Hoeve, Ellen R. Urton, Thomas W. Bell

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

From 2007 - 2009, Kansas State University Libraries (K-State Libraries) committed to strategically assess and redevelop their organizational structure. The Libraries’ Strategic Plan and position redistributions commenced in 2007 and 2009 respectively, with adjustments in 2010 to accommodate the university’s “K-State 2025” Strategic Plan. Together, these plans changed the roles of former subject librarians, dividing and transferring responsibilities for outreach, reference, instruction, and collection development. Among the more significant changes was the creation of departments devoted to patron groups, rather than specific academic disciplines. Illustrating how the reorganization changed the roles of traditional library services, this chapter will outline the …

Managing In-Kind Gifts With Gist’S Gifts And Deselection Manager, Michelle Emanuel Jan 2014

Managing In-Kind Gifts With Gist’S Gifts And Deselection Manager, Michelle Emanuel

Library Publications

Unsolicited gifts exacerbate existing space issues and backlogs, staff workflows, and collection policies. As the scope and needs of libraries continually change, the positions that might have typically managed these donations, such as gift librarians or paraprofessional staff, are no longer automatically replaced as they become vacant. In the University of Mississippi Libraries, recent technological developments such as the Getting It Started Toolkit (GIST) Gift Deselection Manager (GDM) have helped to streamline workflow by generating data that can be shared with subject librarians as well as administration.

Collection Development In The Humanities And Social Sciences In A Transitional Age: Deaccession Of Print Items, David E. Woolwine Jan 2014

Collection Development In The Humanities And Social Sciences In A Transitional Age: Deaccession Of Print Items, David E. Woolwine

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

A literature review of user preferences, research habits and needs, and citation studies are used to argue that deaccession of print titles in the humanities and social sciences in academic libraries should occur in a conservative fashion as libraries transition to greater digital holdings. The issue of retention of translations is given special emphasis. The centrality of engaged research for undergraduate education makes the retention, at present, of both a rich print and digital collection necessary as the distinction between a collection geared toward faculty research and one for undergraduate research becomes less important.
