Migration To The Us Among Rural Puerto Ricans Who Inject Drugs: Influential Factors, Sources Of Support, And Challenges For Harm Reduction Interventions, Roberto Abadie, Patrick Habecker, C. Gelpi-Acosta, Kirk Dombrowski
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Background: While PWID of Puerto Rican origin have been migrating to the US for decades, the range of factors influencing their migration to the US and the resources they draw on to do so are not well understood. This is particularly true for rural Puerto Rican PWID, and the present study is the first empirical research to document migration patterns among this population. The specificities of their migration raise important challenges that need to be documented in order to implement more effective harm reduction policies at home (Puerto Rico) and abroad (US).

Supply Shock Versus Demand Shock: The Local Effects Of New Housing In Low-Income Areas, Brian J. Asquith, Evan Mast, Davin Reed
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
We study the local effects of new market-rate housing in low-income areas using microdata on large apartment buildings, rents, and migration. New buildings decrease nearby rents by 5 to 7 percent relative to locations slightly farther away or developed later, and they increase in-migration from low-income areas. Results are driven by a large supply effect—we show that new buildings absorb many high-income households—that overwhelms any offsetting endogenous amenity effect. The latter may be small because most new buildings go into already-changing areas. Contrary to common concerns, new buildings slow local rent increases rather than initiate or accelerate them.
José Martí: The World's Most Popular Poetry, And A Vision For The Americas, Anne O. Fountain
José Martí: The World's Most Popular Poetry, And A Vision For The Americas, Anne O. Fountain
Faculty Publications
This chapter begins with a capsule biographical sketch that situates José Martí as an agent of decolonization. It discusses Martí's place in literature, especially Spanish American letters, his transcultural importance, his work in translation, his role in the history of Cuban–US relations, and his vision for US relations with Latin America. It demonstrates the extraordinary international reach of his most popular writing by giving close attention to how two works, a book of poetry, Simple Verses (Versos Sencillos) and an essay, “Our America” (“Nuestra América”) have come to represent him to an increasingly broad audience.

Spillover Effects In Police Use Of Force, Justin E. Holz, Roman G. Rivera, Bocar A. Ba
Spillover Effects In Police Use Of Force, Justin E. Holz, Roman G. Rivera, Bocar A. Ba
All Faculty Scholarship
We study the link between officer injuries-on-duty and the force-use of their peers using a network of officers who, through a random lottery, began the police academy together. We find that peer injuries-on-duty increase the probability of using force by 7%. The effect is concentrated in a narrow time window near the event and is not associated with significantly lower injury risk to the officer. Complaints of improper searches and failure to provide service also increase after peer injuries, suggesting that the increase in force might be driven by heightened risk aversion.

New Paradigm New Practices And New Professionalism Needed To Meet Modern World Library Challenges, Muhammad Ramzan Dr, Ashfaq Hussain, Zaheer Ahmad
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Since their existence libraries have been acquiring, organizing, disseminating and preserving recorded human knowledge only. However, inventions enforced through information and communication technologies have brought drastic changes in the medium of information storage, dissemination and use. There have been a number of studies in the developed world, which investigated and reported how they created, managed, adopted and reacted to the challenges and opportunities provided by the new information and communication technologies. Now the question is what type of systems, skills and services we need to establish and convert existing libraries into hybrid 21st Centry Libraries. This paper traces the …

Open defecation (OD) has devastating consequences for public health (UNICEF, 2018). In Indonesia, despite OD practice has been steadily decreasing in the last ten years, about 25 million people continue to practice OD in 2019. The study aimed to identify sources of sanitation and hygiene information received by riverside villagers, to identify defecation practiced by riverside villagers, and to examine the correlation between sources of information received with their defecation practice. Using a descriptive quantitative approach, data was collected from Sumberjaya village, a village under a sub-district having the highest OD rate in Malang Regency. A set of questionnaire was …

Revisiting The Open Access Citation Advantage For Legal Scholarship, John R. Beatty
Revisiting The Open Access Citation Advantage For Legal Scholarship, John R. Beatty
Law Librarian Journal Articles
Citation studies in law have shown a significant citation advantage for open access legal scholarship. A recent cross-disciplinary study, however, gave opposite results. This article shows how methodology, including the definition of open access and the source of the citation data, can affect the results of open access citation studies.

Increasing Interactivity In Archaeology Courses At The Undergraduate And Graduate Levels, Guy Hepp
Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
This project included revisions to ANTH 140: World Civilizations I, the Rise of Civilization and ANTH 616: History and Theory of Archaeology. For ANTH 140, the required readings, lecture content, group activities, and assessment strategies were all significantly changed or completely replaced. For ANTH 616, subtle changes were made to reading response, group discussion, and online group discussion strategies. Both course revisions resulted in improved classroom atmospheres. This was especially the case for ANTH 140, where average and median grades improved and standard deviations in grades decreased. Improvements to ANTH 616, a small seminar course, were too affected by outliers …

What Intellectual Empathy Can Offer Information Literacy Education, Andrea Baer
What Intellectual Empathy Can Offer Information Literacy Education, Andrea Baer
Libraries Scholarship
This chapter explores the roles that affect, social identity and beliefs play in how people engage with information about politically- and emotionally-charged issues and the implications for information literacy education, particularly in politically polarized times. Considering research from cognitive psychology and education, I also suggest ways to move beyond traditional approaches to information literacy that tend to focus on logic and “objectivity” while neglecting the significance of personal beliefs and social identity to information behaviors. I give particular focus to philosopher Maureen Linker’s concept of "intellectual empathy" – “the cognitive-affective elements of thinking about identity and social difference” (Linker, 2014, …

How Responsiveness From A Communication Partner Affects Story Retell In Aphasia: Quantitative And Qualitative Findings, Tyson G. Harmon, Adam Jacks, Katarina L. Haley, Antoine Bailliard
Faculty Publications
Purpose: Because people with aphasia frequently interact with partners who are unresponsive to their communicative attempts, we investigated how partner responsiveness affects quantitative measures of spoken language and subjective reactions during story retell.
Method: A quantitative and a qualitative study were conducted. In study 1, participants with aphasia and controls retold short stories to a communication partner who indicated interest through supportive backchannel responses (responsive) and another who indicated disinterest through unsupportive backchannel responses (unresponsive). Story retell accuracy, delivery speed, and ratings of psychological stress were measured and compared. In study 2, participants completed semi-structured interviews about their story retell …
