A Study On The Use Of Ontologies To Represent Collective Knowledge, John Mcauley Jan 2008

A Study On The Use Of Ontologies To Represent Collective Knowledge, John Mcauley

Masters

The development of ontologies has become an area of considerable research interest over the past number of years. Domain ontologies are often developed to represent a shared understanding that in turn indicates cooperative effort by a user community. However, the structure and form that an ontology takes is predicated both on the approach of the developer and the cooperation of the user community. A shift has taken place in recent years from the use of highly specialised and expressive ontologies to simpler knowledge models, progressively developed by community contribution. It is within this context that this thesis investigates the use …

Kinda Just Like Google: Presence And Variety Of Search Options On Library Homepages, Jimmy Ghaphery, Susan Teague Rector, Sam Byrd

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

In order to take the temperature of the academic library community with regard to external search boxes, the authors visited 111 academic ARL Library web sites on October 9th, 2007. In visiting each homepage, a record was kept detailing the presence and type of search boxes appearing at the top level. The resulting data paints an interesting portrait of diverse approaches, congruencies, and innovation. Globally this measure strikes to the core of current technological challenges with library search and web site design.

Integrated, Embedded, And Case-Based: Selling Library Instruction To The Business School, Leticia Camacho, Andy Spackman

Faculty Publications

Brigham Young University (BYU), located in Provo, Utah, is home to the Marriott School of Management, which has an enrollment of 1,900 undergraduate and 1,100 graduate students. Nearly 75 percent are bilingual, 20 percent speak a third language, and approximately 10 percent are foreign citizens.

In the year 2000, the Tanner Management Library was displaced from the Marriott School and incorporated into the Harold B. Lee Library, BYU’s main campus library. Without a physical presence in the business school, BYU’s business librarians have struggled to remain relevant to a faculty and student body that is increasingly dependent on the Internet …

Designing Search: Effective Search Interfaces For Academic Library Websites, Susan Teague Rector, Jimmy Ghaphery

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

Academic libraries customize, support and provide access to myriad information systems, each with complex graphical user interfaces (GUIs). The number of possible information entry points on an academic library Web site is both daunting to the end user and consistently challenging to library Web site designers. Faced with the challenges inherent in designing online search interfaces and the ever-growing amount of resources available online, VCU Libraries sought to explore how to build effective search interfaces that, at the same time, support a wide variety of computer users and provide comprehensive access to assorted collections of electronic resources. Over a 9 …

Something Else They Didn't Teach Us: Management Education For Non-Traditional Managers. The Case Of Library Directors, Maureen L. Mackenzie Ph.D., Lauren Spatig Ph.D., Michael Koenig, James P. Smith Mls, Ph.D.

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

This panel theme has evolved from a broader research agenda on defining and understanding the process of educating the individuals who hold management positions in non-traditional businesses. Examples of such non-traditional business managers, and the graduate degrees they hold, include: Library Directors (MLS), Pastors (M.Div), Primary and Secondary School Principals (Ed.D), Museum Directors (MFA), College Provosts and Presidents (Ph.D.) and Physicians (M.D.). The academic preparation for an individual earning a discipline-specific degree, as described above, is fundamentally different from that taken by the individual who has sought an advanced degree in management with the intention of assuming a leadership role …

Human Resource Administration In The Academic Library, Dennis R. Defa

Library Scholarship

Libraries at colleges and universities provide a challenging environment for the practice of human resource (HR) administration. The dynamics and structure of the academic library within the higher education community create complex environments for the library administrator attempting to navigate the myriad rules and regulations (state, federal, and institutional) that affect staff recruiting, hiring, processing, compensating, and related functions for library personnel. Depending upon the complexities of the HR function in any academic library, the organization may be best served by designating an HR expert as a member of the library’s administrative team. This article will review the HR function …

Codes And Hypertext: The Intertextuality Of International And Comparative Law, Marylin J. Raisch Jan 2008

Codes And Hypertext: The Intertextuality Of International And Comparative Law, Marylin J. Raisch

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The field of information studies reveals gaps in the literature of international and comparative law as part of interdisciplinary and textual studies. To illustrate the kind of theoretical and text-based work that could be done, this essay provides an example of such a study. Religious law texts, civil law codes, treaties and constitutional texts may provide a means to reveal the nature of hypertext as the new format for commentary. Margins used to be used for commentary, and now this can be done with hypertext and links in footnotes. Scholarly communication in general is now intertextual, and texts derive value …

Writing Circle Feedback: Creating A Vibrant Community Of Scholars, Allyson Washburn Jan 2008

Writing Circle Feedback: Creating A Vibrant Community Of Scholars, Allyson Washburn

Faculty Publications

An article previously published in this journal described Gray's twelve steps to help scholars write and publish (1999). One of the elements of Gray's process is to share writing drafts and receive feedback from peers. Writing circles provide writers with peer support and reactions to their writing throughout the writing process. Participation in a writing circle can assist junior library faculty in overcoming such factors as fear, lack of confidence, and procrastination. This paper describes the establishment and workings of a writing circle at the Harold B. Lee Library (HBLL) at BYU that attempted to assist junior faculty librarians to …

Faculty Publications

In a 2007 study, librarians at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Library examined freely available online tutorials on medical library Web sites. The team identified tutorial topics, determined common design features, and assessed elements of active learning in library-created tutorials; the team also generated a list of third-party tutorials to which medical libraries link. This article updates the earlier study, describing changes and trends in tutorial content and design on medical libraries’ Web sites; the project team plans to continue to track trends in tutorial development by repeating this study annually.
