In 2002 a study was conducted of community college collections in Florida as a follow-up and an additional interval to a similar study conducted in 1998. The analysis in 2002 compared the profile of the LINCC database, three peer groups of community colleges by enrollment size, and each of the twenty-eight community colleges with the 1998 study results. Among the significant findings are: The median age of LINCC collective holdings improved between 1998 and 2002, declining from 24 years to 22 years. The “year reached 50%” for the LINCC database in 2002 was 1980, meaning that half of the monographs …

Global Collective Resources: A Study Of Monographic Bibliographic Records In Worldcat., Anna H. Perrault Jul 2002

Global Collective Resources: A Study Of Monographic Bibliographic Records In Worldcat., Anna H. Perrault

Anna H. Perrault

In 2001, WorldCat, the primary international bibliographic utility, contained 45 million records with over 750 million library location listings. These records span over 4,000 years of recorded knowledge in 377 languages.1 Under the auspices of an OCLC/ALISE research grant, a bibliometric study was conducted of WorldCat. A 10% systematic random sample of the database was analyzed utilizing the OCLC iCAS product to profile the monographic bibliographic records in WorldCat by type of library, subject, language, and publication date parameters. The profile details the Ainformation commons@ of global publication made accessible through the OCLC international network.

There were 3,378,272 usable records …

The Florida Community College Statewide Collection Assessment Project: Outcomes And Impact, Anna H. Perrault, Tina Adams, Jeannie Dixon, Rhonda Smith

A collection assessment project was conducted in 1998 of the twenty-eight community college library/Library Resource Center (LRC) collections in Florida.1 The evaluative materials provided to each of the institutions produced a number of outcomes. To assess the project’s impact, a survey was conducted in fall 2000. The impact study found that, in the opinion of library administrators, the Florida Community College Collection Assessment study had influenced the appropriation of additional funds, informed librarians’ collection development decisions, and affected the weeding of collections through the presentation of institution-specific collection assessment reports that were provided for each library. The major finding of …

The 30th anniversary of WorldCat was celebrated in 2001. At that time, there were 45 million records with over 750 million location listings, spanning over 4,000 years of recorded knowledge in 377 languages. In the anniversary year, a bibliometric study was begun under the auspices of an OCLC/ALISE research grant. A 10% systematic random sample of the database was analyzed utilizing the OCLC iCAS software to profile the monographic contents of WorldCat by type of library, subject and language parameters. The profile reveals the extent of global publication made accessible through the OCLC international network. Several findings of the study …

The Effects Of High Median Age On Currency Of Resources In Community College Library Collections, Anna H. Perrault, Richard Madaus, Ann Armbrister, Jeannie Dixon, Rhonda Smith

Anna H. Perrault

In 1998, a comprehensive study was conducted of the monograph collections of the twenty-eight public community colleges in Florida. This article reports the findings of that study with respect to median age and currency of resources. The rationale for the interpretation of the findings in the Florida Community College Collection Assessment Project is congruent with the philosophy that college collections should emphasize the instructional and curricular needs of students and, therefore, that the collections should emphasize current resources rather than retrospective depth. The findings on median age from the Florida Community College study serve as an example for the discussion …

National Collecting Trends: Methods And Findings, Anna H. Perrault Jan 1999

National Collecting Trends: Methods And Findings, Anna H. Perrault

Anna H. Perrault

The primary focus of collection evaluation and assessment has been the subjective judgment of the strengths and weaknesses of library collections. The process has generally been a local application, often utilizing peer group comparative data. Quantitative collection analysis to support the subjective processes of collection evaluation and assessment is now almost universally conducted through extraction of data from local systems or network databases. National collecting patterns can be studied through the use of data extracted from the bibliographic utilities. This article examines the use of data from the OCLC/AMIGOS Collection Analysis CD and standard statistical series as a methodology for …

An Assessment Of The Collective Resources Base Of Florida Community College Library Collections: A Profile With Interpretative Analysis, Anna H. Perrault, Richard Madaus, Ann Armbrister, Jeannie Dixon, Rhonda Smith

Anna H. Perrault

The Florida Community College Assessment Project is the first reported statewide assessment for community college collections using quantitative data extracted from a network information system. The collection analysis is based upon bibliometric data extracted from LINCC, the Library Information Network for Community Colleges in Florida. The analysis of the aggregated resources base by imprint year shows that the resources of Florida community colleges are significantly out of date with outdated materials prevalent in all major subject divisions including the sciences and health sciences. This is the only reported project to analyze data from a network collective resources base of community …
