Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

Graduate programs in all disciplines view external funding as a benchmark of success. For students on research teams and for those seeking academic careers, faculty role models demonstrate the need for funding as an integral part of the research cycle. Closer to home, the increasing cost of graduate education requires students seek supplemental funding. This session, divided into two segments (internal and external funding), will present experiential case studies for how academic libraries can design scholarships and fellowships to serve graduate students in this often overlooked phase of their graduate education.

Whose Book Is This [And Does It Matter]? How Shared Print Programs Are Redefining Our Understanding Of Local Collections, Susan Stearns, Matthew Sheehy, Lizanne Payne, Dan Cherubin

ACRL New England Chapter Annual Conference

Shared print initiatives such as the Eastern Academic Scholars’ Trust [EAST] and the HathiTrust Shared Print Program are beginning to redefine collection ownership in academic and research libraries and offer opportunities for new forms of cooperation and collaboration. These large-scale programs effectively create mega-collections of scholarly materials that have been designated for retention or preservation and can be loaned to partner libraries. This panel will report on the results of these ground-breaking shared print programs, discuss plans for growth and posit ways in which such programs may impact collection development, resource sharing, and library collaboration at scale.

The Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library serves the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, the Milken Institute School of Public Health, and the School of Nursing. Over the last half century, the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and the more recently incorporated Schools of Public Health and Nursing, have experienced substantial growth in their research enterprise and a corresponding increase in scholarly communications. Using statistics and metrics derived from bibliographic databases, this poster will track the growth in scholarly output from 1960 to the present.
