Indigenous Language Revitalization: Success, Sustainability, And The Future Of Human Culture, Grace Lewis

Capstone Showcase

This thesis looks at different styles of Indigenous language revitalization programs and seeks to delineate the three most successful characteristics seen across differing designs in an effort to promote the presence of these characteristics in existing programs. The literature analyzed outlines three main schools of thought: first, that language-based education is the most effective program design, second, that language-based education is only effective if it is directed and driven by the community it serves, and third, that culture-based education is the most effective design. Addressing First Nations' Concerns In Water Sharing Agreements, Cynthia Huo

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Water sharing agreements are a potential solution to the issue of ongoing water insecurity in First Nations' communities. They involve a First Nation connecting their water system to that of a nearby municipality, and paying that municipality a fee for water provision. However, some First Nations have been reluctant to enter into these types of agreements. However, when individuals do access available resources, they often experience anti-Native sentiment (Hoss & Blum, 2019; Pedersen et al, 2006). Thus, we hope to learn about Indigenous peoples’ …

Decolonizing Disability: An Independent Research Project, Audrin Thorn

Scholars Week

It may appear that the marginalization of people with disabilities/impairments and the marginalization of colonized subjects are separate issues, even if they sometimes intersect in the bodyminds of disabled Indigenous individuals. However, the marginalization and oppression of disabled and Indigenous people goes beyond the “simple” intersecting of oppressions. Indigenous peoples and those constructed by Western culture to have disabilities are disempowered and marginalized by deeply overlapping and mutually reinforcing mechanisms of oppression. My academic goal for this research was to engage in a borderland dialogue between Indigenous and Western worldviews around conceptions of health and unwellness, as a basis for …
