'Digital Is Not Different' - Copyright In Digital Environment, Barbara Szczepańska Jun 2004

'Digital Is Not Different' - Copyright In Digital Environment, Barbara Szczepańska

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Development in technology has brought to the libraries new kind of resources. Digital works such as books, periodicals and other materials are now in libraries collections. In spite of the fact that basic principles of copyright remain the same for ”traditional” and digital works. Copyright in digital environment is much more difficult to control because of the ease of creation, modification and distribution of digital copies over networks. Libraries help copyright holders to protect digital works against copyright infringements. On the other hand they represent also users of protected materials, and have a crucial role to play in ensuring the …

Internet In The Library - The Sky Isn't Blue, Błażej Feret, Barbara Szczepańska Jun 2004

Internet In The Library - The Sky Isn't Blue, Błażej Feret, Barbara Szczepańska

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In the past few years, libraries, including academic libraries, became not only a place in which users could find information supporting teaching and research, but also hubs for patron access to the Internet and its vast resources. However, the Internet is not a “good boy”, and the information easily found with search engines or peer-to-peer programs may be used for bad goals. Should academic libraries promote unrestricted access to the Internet for the sake of people’s right to open access to information, or should they rather restrict and filter the incoming information to that actually related to the subjects of …

Addressing Staff Concerns In Changing Times: Supporting The Institution's Greatest Asset, Erika Linke

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The strategic plan at Carnegie Mellon University highlights the important contributions that staff members make to the organization. Concomitantly the university encourages the growth of a diverse campus community and stresses the important of developing a culture of respect. The university libraries have embraced these two threads – recognizing the important contributions made by staff and the desirability of a diverse work force. This paper discusses the importance of these two threads and highlights the various steps taken to acknowledge staff contributions and to create a culture of respect.

Managing Staff Concerns And Expectations During A Library Merger, Adriaan Swanepoel

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss results of a survey to measure concerns and expectations of library staff before and after a merger. The survey was done four months before a merger took place between three separate Technikons in South Africa, and it was repeated two months after the merger. The questionnaire that was used to gather information from all full-time library staff members of the three technikons included questions on how important it is for library staff, within the context of the merger, that certain work-related conditions stay the same, e.g. to have the same …

Drexel University, The University Of Maryland, And Their Libraries’ Experiences Collaborating With Various Research Programs, Jay Bhatt, John Meyer, Rafael Sidi

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Last year, researchers and librarians at both Drexel University and the University of Maryland initiated similar collaborative projects in their respective institutions to contribute to the development of life-long learning skills among the select participants. One joint finding was the importance of linking advances in knowledge, not just as hypothetical learning that benefits an elite few, but rather for the advancement of our society as a whole. Drexel University has two NSF-supported programs, Research Experience for Teachers (RET) and the Research Experience for Undergraduates Site (REU) DREAM (Drexel Research Experience in Advanced Materials). RET’s primary goal is to provide experiential …

Beyond The Happy Sheets! Evaluating Learning In Information Skills Teaching, Richard German, Jane Barton, Nick Joint May 2004

Beyond The Happy Sheets! Evaluating Learning In Information Skills Teaching, Richard German, Jane Barton, Nick Joint

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This paper reviews three years of data measuring students' immediate reactions to a computer-assisted learning package in information skills and reports on work in progress to establish a more comprehensive programme of evaluation which will assess the medium term impact on learning of both the courseware itself and the way the courseware is delivered to students. The GAELS courseware was developed in the late 1990s as part of a collaborative project between the Universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde, with funding from the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council. The courseware was designed to teach higher level information skills and was initially …

Infoservices: A Multi-Channel, Multi-Tier Model For Information Service Delivery, Rowan Salt May 2004

Infoservices: A Multi-Channel, Multi-Tier Model For Information Service Delivery, Rowan Salt

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Griffith University’s Division of Information Services provides integrated library, information technology and flexible learning services to Griffith’s community of approximately 30,000 staff and students. A Division-wide restructure in 2001 led to the creation of InfoServices, a new organisational unit created from members of library and information technology front-line staff. This unit was presented with the challenge of answering the majority of customer inquiries related to the Division’s products and services. InfoServices seeks to resolve 80% of all customer inquiries at first contact, regardless of product. In order to meet this demand, InfoServices implemented a multi-channel multi-tier service delivery model. InfoServices’ …

The Library hosted a conference and developed a survey to measure the scholars’ needs. Methodology and preliminary results are discussed.

Librarians And Engineering Faculty: Partnership Opportunities In Information Literacy And Ethics Instruction, Alice Trussell May 2004

Librarians And Engineering Faculty: Partnership Opportunities In Information Literacy And Ethics Instruction, Alice Trussell

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

As the global economy grew in the latter half of the 20th Century, the demand for the mobility of engineers greatly increased. In the 1980’s and 1990’s, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), an accreditation agency serving primarily the United States, began to look at engineering programs outside of the United States with the intent of establishing recognized reciprocity. Through the Washington Accord, first established in 1989, mutual recognition agreements were signed with accrediting agencies in several countries. In the year 2000, heavily modified ABET standards affecting North America took effect emphasizing qualitative standards as well as quantitative …

Projecting Success: Effective Project Management In Academic Libraries, Stephanie Atkins

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Managing a major project in an academic library can be daunting in the best financial circumstances. However, in the current climate of diminished funding and increased competition, libraries will face the challenge of funding and staffing their initiatives with limited resources. Project management can assist libraries in achieving their projects on schedule and within budget. Best practices in project management are examined in the context of two major projects undertaken at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library. The first project was the barcoding of three million in three months in preparation for the transition to a new automated library …
